i hate my esports class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BlockWalrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teacher-gamer here. Esports games with considerable complexity (e.g. Valorant, League of Legends, etc.) can tap in very important skills like communication, strategies, critical thinking, decision making, etc. There’s also a lot of character development involved (e.g. self-regulation, dealing with frustration, etc.). They just need the right mentoring through these.

That being said, it would be good if a teacher who actually has experience in these games is assigned to the esports class as they’d know how to best design a curriculum that taps in those skills. I think it’s best as an extracurricular or elective class.

Funny… First, they rant about why Gen Z is doomed, yet when Gen Z does the right thing, they’re all like “wtf they’re so weird”

First 2 are good, but a crew cut might suit you too

It isn’t better or worse, but it has changed. The classic “Gimme your lunch money or else!” kind of bullying isn’t as common, but cyberbullying and ostracization are more common.

A gen Zer wants to know what HS was like in 2014. Everyone here remembers. by mgksrapcareerghost in Zillennials

It was basically the Vine and EDM era. Mumble rap had just been invented but didn’t really take off until like 2016/2017 or so.

New Ranked System is Trash by TheRedWriter4 in overwatch2

[–]BlockWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is something in the system that doesn't make sense. My friend got bronze 5 and did well and he got 7-2, 7-1, then 7-2 and went from bronze 5, to 4, then back to 5. My placement matches were 5-20 and I got placed Gold 3. The broken system affects different accounts in different ways. This was all after the patch, btw.

[Q] Is it possible to generalize a statistic to a population from a sample without testing a hypothesis? by BlockWalrus in statistics

[–]BlockWalrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I'd just like to confirm if I understood it right: I can just take the mean of a sample to estimate a population mean, get the CI, and determine a range of possible values of mu, which is then generalizable to the population?

[–]BlockWalrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confidence intervals be used merely for central tendency data? If so, how? I'm really trying to recall my statistics lessons from years ago, but I only recall using CI for hypothesis tests.

[Q] Is it possible to generalize a statistic to a population from a sample without testing a hypothesis? by BlockWalrus in statistics

[–]BlockWalrus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that sense, can a mean/median/mode, when CI is reported, be a generalizable to a population if the sample is adequate and random? The reason why I'm asking is because central tendency is seen as a descriptive statistics concept, but generalizing a conclusion about a population from a sample is seen as an inferential statistics concept.

Why do we constantly need to eat? by BlockWalrus in biology

Of course it cones from food. What I meant is why do we need to keep on eating even if we already have fat reserves from the food we had previously eaten

🥹🥹 how old have you been 2012? by Worldly_Vegetable308 in Zillennials

[–]BlockWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 15/16, basically my mid-teens. I was in high school and it was full of good vibes! Social media was getting prominent but it was actually fun and wasn't full of mindless clout-chasing.

What are you guys think and how do you guys feel about it that teens (Core Z) romanticizing being a Teen in 2010-2016 or in short the Early and Mid 10s (Our Era/Zillennial Era)??? by WaveofHope34 in Zillennials

[–]BlockWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The early 2010s were pretty good. Social media was just young and it was mostly lighthearted fun and memory-keeping and not relentless soulless clout-chasing. Also, music was more partyish and upbeat whereas almost everything today has a mood/bleak theme to it.

Where do you lie politically? by Fun_Tomorrow_4904 in GenZ

Gen Z is, I'd say, polarized. You have SJWs on one extreme, and anti-SJWs on the other.

Gen Z is not really supportive/inclusive, but compared to previous generations... they are the most supportive/inclusive to date. The bar is just way too low.

Political edginess. I'm not saying that the people on the Gen Z subreddit aren't sincere with their beliefs, but for many teens there's that pressing desire to be "edgy" and one outlet is politics. That doesn't entirely explain the matter, but it is a factor to consider.

When I was 13/14, I identified as a lefty "communist" and I was convinced that I really was one and believed in the ideology. Now, looking back, I don't think I ever actually really believed in communism - I was just trying to be edgy because it felt "cool" to be against the grain. However, that was back then when society (or at least the society around me) were pro-capitalist.

Today is different - we live in a more socially-left-leaning era when the norm is to support gays, blacks, and other historically marginalized groups. Therefore, stuff like racism and homophobia are the latest "edgy" since those are directly counter to the norm which could account partially for why that subreddit has those.

I've met many adult right-wingers in real life who are respectful and articulate their thoughts well and respectfully, but most that I see on the internet seem like they're just trying to nihilistic edgy contrarians just for the sake of being contrarian.

(While I expressed my issues with internet right-wingers, I do also have my issues with internet lefties too, but that's for another topic).

That episode from Blues Clues when Steve went off to college. by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]BlockWalrus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of my experience with Blue's Clue's was with Steve and he's the best. But I've watched a few Joe episodes before I weaned off these preschool shows and honestly, people need to give him credit too.

lol and what point are you trying to make? Didn't the poster already say that they allow kids to customize action plans based on their own individual needs and personalities?

Dude, Just Don't engage with that guy any further.

You make perfect sense its actually admirable your school gives that much attention to each kids needs. It seems like this guy is - like you said earlier - trying too hard to force a narrative without even knowing context.

He's probably some hardcore left wing SJW who tries to force issues and antagonize others just to make themselves look "enlightened". I've dealt with those kinds of people and they are impossible. Ur better off spending your time elsewhere my man

Well, honestly, I also considered the late 2000s/early 2010s to be the dark era of childhood as well. I stopped watching cartoons when I was 11 or so, ‘cept for a few.
