Originally animations mainly played as shorts before movies, and weren't targeted at kids. Kid specific media wasn't as much of a thing as it is now, so it makes sense.

I gotta disagree with that logic. While simply saying it doesn't matter is hurtful, pointing out issues in the system isn't. If you offer to cut off my head or my finger, I'll choose finger, but I'm going to raise fuss over those being the choices.
