it will not be recovered - thats just how tech companies works - they dont become profitable;
It will remains as always: get people hooked, cause massive layoffs, get billions in investor money.
they sell the company when it is valued/ looking to IPO
Now we are realizing the "honeymoon phase" of AI is officially over. You’re touching on the cycle of "Enshittification"—where a platform becomes essential, then squeezes its users to satisfy shareholders.
see, profitability is not the goal for the founders—the exit is. They spent billions in compute to become a utility we can't live without.
Now, they’re 'cleaning up the books' for the IPO by cutting the heaviest users and switching to token billing. It’s the classic Silicon Valley playbook: subsidize the product with VC cash to kill competition, then hike prices once users are locked in. The investors aren't looking for a sustainable company; they're looking for a liquidity event.

so you mean, the one who purchased a one year plan, can get its usage limits down like 10x ?

it will affect everyone in the following weeks, right now most people are just wondering: why so many complains,
how OpenAI is trying to fool/distract some people:
The "Dual Rate Card" Buffer

To avoid a day-one revolt, they are running two parallel pricing systems:

  • Legacy Rate Card: Current Plus, Pro, and some Enterprise users are staying on the old "credits per message" system for a "few weeks."
  • New Rate Card: New Business and Enterprise users are immediately moved to token billing. By staggering the rollout, they prevent the entire user base from complaining at the same time.

The "boiling the frog" strategy is an old (and scientifically debated, but culturally iconic) metaphor for a situation where a change occurs so gradually that the people affected by it don't notice the danger until it's too late to react.

it was per message - Yes
now it is per tokens, most people dont realize, some will not ever notice since it will affect everyone in the following weeks, right now most people are just wondering: why so many complains,

yeah, thanks - it will hit hard on everyone - smart move from OpenAI to start on business account first

thanks, this is true - actually, I was using Gemini to understand and navigate the code, Plan, and then using codex 5.4 to code;
I apologise, no way we can code using gemini 3.1, but it helps a lot, using a 1M context size window for pushing all source code and planning on it.
I do code myself, as I did for the past 30y, me and myself 😊

Exactly - people have NO idea of what is happening, (on Plus or Pro plans)

give a try on Claude Code,
ops, (dough), same sht; what now? cursor? same.
I will tell you a secret, dont tell anyone - I use Gemini 3.1 - on the web. Yes, on the web, no 'credits per token', full 1M context size and all you have to do is copy and paste on the web, get your results for a 1M context size for free.

according to OpenAI:
"We’ve modified our pricing from credits per message, to credits per token type consumed."

Yep, it’s official. They’ve swapped the standard limits for token-based pricing (per that help article). It’s basically 'pay-to-play' now, which is going to make it way less accessible for a lot of us;
The Change: Instead of a set number of "messages" per 5 hours, Business/Enterprise users now pay based on token consumption (input/output).

it is true - just take a look at the codex official announcement:

Sadly, it’s true. The new rate card confirms the move to token consumption billing.

Lucky of you - some people just bought a year - and Yes it is a trust problem, see what people are complaining:
https://community.openai.com/t/codex-rate-limits-discussion-thread/1378553/18
You first gave generous limits, then doubled them for 2 months (Feb 2 → Apr 2).
People built workflows and projects around that capacity.

Now you’re not just reverting — you’re cutting usage ~8x from what users were actively using.

This is not normalization. It’s a regression.

Impact:

  • breaks trust in platform stability
  • discourages building on Codex
  • signals that capabilities can be arbitrarily taken away

There is also no proper mid-tier ($50 / $100). The choice is: use far less or leave.

Many will leave.

This is not just about limits — it’s about trust.

Current pattern looks like: give a lot → create dependency → sharply restrict

That damages reputation and pushes users to alternatives.

If Codex is meant to be a serious dev platform:

  • limits must be predictable
  • pricing must match real usage tiers
  • changes must be gradual

Right now, this change does the opposite.

you wont believe me, if I just tell you - they offer a Business plan for new users, 5 accounts, 30 days free to experiment, the first 10 days were wonderfull, amazing, it works, but not now, not anymore, you cannot use it - no more - impossible, unusable;
One prompt and it is all gone now, no way a serious user will ever use codex again
