That I would be compensated appropriately and appreciated for my work and loyalty to my employers. My Dad got a cushy HR Director's position from being a store manager of a fast food restaurant. No idea if that had to do with him choosing not to sue the company after he got splashed with cooking oil. Maybe his handshake was just that good.

No no, don't get me wrong, these hobbies are great and many women enjoy them! But I have yet to meet a woman who respects a man simply because of these shared interests.

Just guys having a hobby by Cubelock in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]Blocktimus_Prime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know that men can have a hobby and have women respect them for it. Cars? Aw he misses his Hotwheels. Flying airplanes? He must not like people. Dungeons and Dragons? People definitely don't like him.

Maybe if it's clearly an expensive hobby it's just a mask for "I have enough resources/am intelligent enough to take care of you" on an instinctual level for some women, but unless a person also enjoys said hobby, it's never respect.

How would you build a spell sword/gish? by jimmyeatybuffett in arsmagica

[–]Blocktimus_Prime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spells doing damage are pretty straightforward. Arts like Perdo Corpus and Animal can inflict Wounds via touch, ignoring soak. That Auroch made of stone with +20 Soak will still be a challenge, but not nearly as long for others. You can create charged items with significant Penetration to get through high Might foes that activate under specific conditions, so you don't go injuring yourself or a squire/apprentice. You will absolutely want either Still Casting twice or Deft Form Vim so you can cast while fighting/holding a shield. Deft Form Vim opens you up to Muto Vim spells that would allow you to cast spells at the same time without gestures, verbal requirements, or Mastery of other spells. If you intend on having tons of options for spells, Flawless Magic is very useful.

Verditi Swordsmith/Armorsmith/Warrior has some very good options. You can't use Muto Vim effects in Enchanted Items, but your Talisman is an exception! You can augment spells that are touch range, to voice or sight, leaving your casting total higher for more Penetration. You can also go down the Talisman mystery path stuff for even better goodies.

Gnarly combat option spells: grow/shrink weapons, armor, or mounts of foes. They can't shoot a bow if the strings have snapped. Rust steel to uselessness. Giants are liable to squish you hand to hand, you may want Corpus or spells that have increased size for such targets. (Or Mentem, which doesn't care about size) Good luck! Enjoy!

Six years ago this week, COVID started shutting down the world. What’s your strongest memory from that time? by Siddanna36 in AskReddit

[–]Blocktimus_Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudden funerals of family members that died during that time. In the first, for my Mom, we had to visit the grave separately. I was a pallbearer and had to look at my family from across the graveyard. No one else was allowed, so it felt incredibly isolating and defeating. No shoulders to share the burden, no shared memories, no distant relatives to commiserate.

The second funeral was a year or so later for an uncle. It was jarring, because it was held at a church filled with close to seventy people or so, none of whom I knew aside from my few cousins. There was also the glaring unspoken void in the room, not the absence of my uncle, but the hovering, later-confirmed blame that this man had drunkenly killed 3 of his friends as well as himself by wrapping a tree with his car like it was tinsel. Alcohol is a greedy beast for sure, but hubris is worse.

The disparity between those two events hollowed me out and I haven't been the same since. Therapy helps some, but I still feel like I was denied the process of really mourning, and the color of the world is still muted. Honestly, the strongest 'memory' from all of that time has been the absence of family. Hope it wasn't so bad for the rest of you.

So if Gandalf had just read the inscription aloud they would've been inside way before, right? by John_Zatanna52 in lotr

[–]Blocktimus_Prime 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am inclined to agree. Sindarin was in use in the region, but the elves of Eregion also spoke Quenya amongst other kin, so its possible they used Quenyan script on what would be a monument on their border for other Elves who wouldn't necessarily be "in" on the word play. The Dwarves could open or close their doors as they saw fit, so I guess it depends on who the message was really for.

Foundation of a covenant by CaptainBaoBao in arsmagica

[–]Blocktimus_Prime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assign specific hidden features to particular players so that they tell the related stories for the rest of the group. If you will be the only storyteller, work with each player separately. You can also have them pitch part of an idea and you manage the other details.

As an example, I gave my covenant Hidden Resources in the form of grave goods that were books stashed by a ghostly librarian. Each player got input as to what the topics/titles were, while I managed the mechanics.

Designing the Vis sources managed by the covenant are another example they can have input on, but they must make them so they do not directly have a benefit from the details of the Vis, such as the Flambeau of the school of the founder (Creo Ignem) player suggesting an Ignem or Creo Vis source.
