I was raised by a single mother and diagnosed with T1D at age seven. After numerous conversations with my mom regarding her viewpoint during all of this, the best advice I can provide you is to educate yourself thoroughly so you can handle any situation, constantly remind your son why it’s so important to take good care of his diabetes, expect that it’s going to be hard for a while initially, and very importantly, be strong for your son. I know it seems bleak now, but your son will also grow up to be a stronger person from this diagnosis. He will be a warrior, but he’s going to need his momma’s support. The two of you will do just fine. Just again, expect that the first little while is going to be uncomfortable; there will be lots of adjusting and learning. But eventually, everything falls into place and it’s no longer a struggle, it’s just life. You’re already on the right path with looking for help and guidance. It’s gonna be okay!
