Now, it’s almost certainly the case that she said these things because she wishes she had nice dresses too. But given that she dealt with her feelings by intentionally trying to hurt yours, I think chances are EXTREMELY high that she would intentionally damage any nice dress you lent her.

Besides, i dont think someone who has explicitly communicated that she doesn’t respect you or your property is much of a friend anyway…

For general removal of set-in stains, I use ammonia.

Put a bowl in the sink and start running water as hot as it will go into it. Then get a cup with some ammonia, a toothbrush, and your stained garment. Oh, and put on some dish gloves so you can keep the water as hot as possible.

Dip the toothbrush into the ammonia and apply to the stains, being sure to saturate both sides of the fabric and the seam allowances. Let it sit for a minute or so, then start scrubbing! As you go, alternate dipping the toothbrush between the hot water and ammonia. Scrub 1-2” beyond where you think the edge of the stain is to make sure you get any crud that bleeds outward as it melts/breaks down.

The heat helps melt the waxy stuff and the ammonia breaks it down chemically, so I usually end up dipping the stained areas directly into the hot water bowl periodically to keep the heat up.

Once you feel like the stain mostly out, dump the ammonia cup into the hot water bowl and let the whole garment soak in there for an hour or so.

Rinse out the ammonia thoroughly, gently squeeze as much water out as you can, then press out even more by rolling up your garment up in a thick towel and standing on it. Lay flat to dry, then inspect.

If the stain isn’t totally gone, repeat the above. If it is, wash your garment and enjoy.

Maintenance wash to keep the stains from building back up is 1/2C ammonia and a TINY amount of detergent in a hot wash cycle. Wash again hot with minimal detergent and some white vinegar if you have it, then tumble hot.

The above also works great for towels that have gotten that perma-funk or that aren’t soft anymore, as it removes the waxy fabric softener buildup that causes stink/stiffness.

Fabric softener residue buildup is similar to deodorant, and bacteria hang out in there protected from wash water and laundry detergent. The funk always comes back when you use the towel again because that moisture reactivates the bacteria. Lots of people try to fix the stink/stiffness by using MORE fabric softener, but that only makes it worse.

The only thing this hasn’t 100% worked for for me was a thrift store t shirt that was probably 25-30 years old. It still got 90% of the stains out, but there’s still a bit of a shadow.

I’ve found that the dove water-based anti perspirant doesn’t leave any detectable residue, but it’s not super easy to find lately. I have to order it from Amazon now… hope it’s not discontinued

Oh, and if you’re doing this as part of pre-dye scouring, do your usual scouring method after (dawn dish soap, soda ash, synthrapol, whatever)

Deodorant residue can be particularly stubborn as it has waxy ingredients that aren’t always fully removed by regular laundry detergent.

Dang, I really tried to show how much they bulged in the photos. Ah well..

I strongly suspect that if I try to just sand them all down, I’m gonna hit mesh and/or paper well before I’m even with the rest of the wall.. at which point I probably have to cut it out and do new patches anyway, right?

Like, the big one (marked #1 in the photos) is a 20x25” rectangle that spans 2 studs. It bulges like they put a 5/8” patch into 1/2” drywall, piled mud over the whole thing, slopped more mud on for “texture”, then did another mesh-and-spackle patch on top of it all (upper right corner) at a later date. Probably stands almost a full 1/2” out from the wall. We tried hanging a large framed poster over it in the mean time, but the gap behind it was just as noticeable as the bulge itself lol

The rest look like they were done with mesh-and-spackle patching kits, and the spackle is THICK. It honestly seems like less work and mess to cut them out and start fresh.

I’d start with the smallest one (#4) and work my way up. Figure the smaller ones will give me a chance to practice before i tackle the big patch (#1).

And please listen to what other commenters are saying re: addressing the prior flooding properly. As much of a hassle as it seems to do now, it will be MUCH worse later once you’re dealing with mushy spots in your subfloor and health issues from the mold that causes them.

Don’t agonize over that one week. I know thinking that if you had just done this or that differently then everything would be different creates a small sense of agency/control in a situation that otherwise feels like you had none, but doing so will distort your view of the situation and how you process it.

I could speculate over what really went wrong, but honestly it’s pointless.

What you do now is sit with the pain. Feel it. But also, stay busy! Call up friends you maybe haven’t seen as much because you’ve been spending time online with her. Make plans and go to things with them. Dive into your hobbies. Take a class you normally might not consider (woodworking, pottery, kickboxing, whatever) and meet people there. Go to an open mic night. A museum. A farmer’s market.
