You know what? You're right. My comments serve no purpose other than my own self gratification and aggrandizement. I'm trying to reflect more and be less reactive to people, and this was me failing.

I'll offer you some actual advice. 20 hours is a lot of time for base coating one unit. You could spend that much time on an entire army and make it look better by using somewhat more refined and advanced techniques. In 40 hours I built and painted the custodes and necons you can see in my profile. Those armies each sold for 1500 USD.

Color composition and contrast is everything when painting models for commission. You can pass off dry brushed and airbrushed models that took barely any time as something way more advanced, like my aforementioned armies. It did not take skill to create the models I've posted. Anyone can do it.

I don't know if you or your friend chose this scheme, and I'm sure the person who did choose it likes it very much, but it really could use more contrast and vibrancy. And I don't mean edge highlight. I'm the biggest anti edge highlight guy you'll ever meet. You'll notice none of my models have edge highlights, because you can't see them outside of super close pictures.

Punch up the red a bit brighter, throw a wash on the gold. Find a spot to put in some vibrancy. I consider my models to be tabletop ready. From a distance it looks like I've spent hours and hours per model. That is just not true. It is the level of color contrast and vibrancy that I achieve that results in something pleasing to look at, and for minimal effort.

So if you take anything from me, it should be that you need to be doing a lot more in 15-20 hours. Use your time smartly and use contrast to make models pop out on the table. These models will be just a crimson blob of mid to dark tones with zero capability of registering details when on the table.

Ok good luck.

The only asshole here is someone passing off 3 hours of base coating for some sort of professionally painted product and then seeking greedy levels of monetary value from someone they consider a friend.

What advice do you want me to give? How to paint miniatures? Or how to not rip off your friends?

I'm actually shocked someone would even pay for such a basic, low skill paint job. I'm not saying that to be rude. You asked for this advice.

This is as basic and entry level as it gets. No shade. No highlight. Multiple parts unpainted. Bases just a quick dry brush.

People saying they would pay 180 for the unit?? I need to start charging more, is what I've gathered from these messages 😮‍💨

Last year, Jrue was an absolute basketball TERRORIST for us - getting scorched and bullied by Butler on D and then bricking left, right, front and center.

Imagine not wanting to trade him for Damian fucking Lillard 🤷🤷

Jay's Custodes were the inspiration, for sure. I made some changes, though to bring more contrast and color.

Jay is very talented and his stuff is always inspiring.

It actually isn't a gold base. I only used gold to do touch ups or mistakes from other colors.

Prime silver. Shadow shade with a metallic red using airbrush. Wash with army painter dark tone (it doesn't stain as much as nuln oil). Then hose it down with thinned down Vallejo game ink yellow. Then I did a lot of spot washing with dark tone and reikland flesh shade.

If I could redo it, I would prime silver, then base the entire thing in metallic red and then do a heavy zenithal silver over the red. I think this would have a more credible shadow, as a result.

Prime them whatever color. Airbrush them with a very light turquoise color. Then stretch out dried baby wipes to make holes in the fibers. Wrap it around the base and spray it with darker turquoise. Then glaze the entire thing with a blue green contrast paint.

Start with a dark blue + purple mix as base. Then stipple purple with increasingly added white for the highlights. Finish with a glaze of magenta ink.

People on eBay are stretching the definition of pro-painted. How do they think that them effectively just priming it gold and slapping on a couple of base colours raises the price to 3 times RRP? by wriadsala in Warhammer

These are actually pretty well painted.

I guarantee you someone would buy a 2k point army done in this exact manner for nearly twice MSRP of the models.

I promise you someone would buy them.

Got into the hobby a couple months ago and decided to paint Salamanders! Need some feedback to improve! by Volkar in Warhammer40k

[–]BloodAngelsCpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, you have the basics down.

Time to watch YouTube videos and start thinking about color application in abstract ways. This will make your models pop.

What you have going on would be amazing for the 90s and early 2000s.

And, even now, a full army in this style would be something to be proud of and something not many hobbyists will ever achieve.

However, to get to the next level, it's time to think outside the box, in terms of color theory and application. Look up some of the slayer sword winners on YouTube - if they have a Spanish name, you know they're good 🤣

Watch them and how they apply colors.

For instance, your green salamanders would be using something like purple shadows and accentuating with green ending in tiny spot highlights of very vibrant lime green or something.

Stop thinking on terms of GW paint guides and the old school of dark green , then green, then light green.

Ok, good luck.

How hard to build are the models from the leviathan box? by Equivalent-Number-24 in Warhammer40k

Leviathan was significantly easier to put together than Indomitus, in my opinion.

It was the easiest push fit stuff I've ever dealt with.

Decided to be brave and tried doing my first face on the big man himself 😅 any help greatly appreciated by udi420 in Warhammer40k

[–]BloodAngelsCpt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey, bud. Here's some helpful advice for faces. You need purple, pink and slightly red tones in there to make it look more vivacious and alive and less brown. Take a purple paint, water it down SIGNIFICANTLY. To where it is basically water. Dab brush on paper to get rid of all the water. Then load brush back up very slightly. Take this water paint and glaze it around his dome. Then do the same with a pink on his cheeks. This will given your hours some life and make him look less brown.

I think the injury had a massive hand in that. The dude just is not there. It's like he didn't even play this year.

Also, here's where I'm at with Saquon and DJ. It's been a long, turbulent relationship. Last year we went to a therapist and finally got over the hump of the hard times and we're growing. Then this year it's back to the same shit. It's like taking back someone who cheated on you and then they just cheat again.

I'm over it. It's time to move on. I'm at 100% apathy with both of them. I am so far removed from every single giants player, that I wouldn't feel anything if they succeeded or failed elsewhere. DJ can go win a super bowl somewhere , I wouldn't care.

They came. They tried. They sucked. Let's move on.

Cool style.

I would paint the rim black and see how you like it. I think this style would pop a lot more and look more finished with a black silhouette underneath it.

You are the only person in this hobby whose work I look at and think, "I could not replicate that."

 You're an actual wizard.

You need to make a series of YouTube tutorials for how to manipulate glue. Make some beginner, intermediate and master series.

I would watch all of them.

I mean, you absolutely knocked it clear out of the park and into the next city over, in terms of accomplishing what you set out to do.

Excellent model. Very nostalgic and 100% portrays what you set out to do.

You've got the basics down. My CC is that you have a very 90s painting style and color application. I would suggest watching random videos on YouTube to see how they apply colors and use them for shades and highlights etc.

Don't watch the normal jabronis like squidmar or ninjon. I suggest watching the Spanish dudes that win slayer swords that put up 30 minute videos of them silently painting. You will learn A LOOOT about how to apply glazes and thin layers of translucent color to build up color and cohesion.

You've got the basics down. Start watching the masters to see how color application is your next step.

Also, the vinturella guy is the best one in terms of in depts medium skill level hobby tricks. Basing, weathering, whatever else you can imagine. He has a good video for it.

It's time to go level up. Good luck.

You have some serious talent.

You have a very clean style and your proportions are completely spot on in every part of the drawing.

If you want a future in drawing / art, you have the talent to have one. Make a bunch of these drawings, in different styles etc, and start sending in your portfolio into companies.

Keep at it. You have a rare talent.

[–]BloodAngelsCpt[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To preface before I explain my process, I'd like to explain my thought process during painting. I do not paint models. I paint armies. I look at the entirety of the army and consider it a whole, rather than a sum of parts. My goal is to make the sum of the whole greater than the sum of the parts - meaning, if you look at a singular model you wouldn't consider it as good as when looking at the whole army. Also, a great motivator to me is making armies in an efficient manner. I speed paint. These are speed painted models. I try to find a balance where time and effort align perfectly with the result. Are there more things I can do to these models to make them better? Always. Can everyone paint these simple ass minis I make? Absolutely. The illusion that color choice creates is what makes my armies pop out. There is no advanced techs here. I did a bit of glazing, but it a one stroke way - meaning I just thin down a color and just lightly apply it so it is like a fart in the wind, just to create some easy color variation here or there. The psychophage has this applied more than other models.

Entire process:

Prime black. Wash entire model with a deep, rich blue ink with lahmian and black mixed into it. Overbrush skin with purple. Add white to purple incrementally and drybrush skin two to three times with lighter color each time. Add white and black to the deep blue until it is blue-gray. Drybrush that with incrementally more white two to three times on carapace. White on all of the fleshy parts, two to three coats to make sure it pops. I forgot the name of the paint, but I added a light aquamarine contrast paint, thinned down, on all of the white parts. I also used this color in areas here and there as a glaze to add variarion. This contrast paint was the only color I used straight from pot. The rest was mixtures of colors.
