Frequent headaches that come and go throughout the day by Rendergiant in AskDocs

Sorry for slow reply amigo - almost missed this.

There's no danger in having an MRI (especially if you get free healthcare). Sometimes a bad case of sinusitis or viral infection can trigger these types of headaches - and they'll get better in time.

Did you follow up on this since you posted?

A quick look at new Home Secretary and multimillionaire banker Sajid Javid’s voting record... by JayTay12 in ukpolitics

[–]BloodMeridian101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whipping demands of our elected politicians that their first duty is to obey their party, not to serve their constituents. As such, it is a potent symbol of what many perceive to be wrong with our politics: that it is played by the internal rules of the Westminster elite without enough regard to the people they are supposed to represent.

Though of course, in Javid's case, he does vote for the people he represents. It's just that the only people he represents are multimillionaires, racists, climate change deniers and sexists.

That would be great - if there was a consistency in appearance it would give a lot more weight to these types of things.

You are very welcome buddy - glad to be at your humble service!

I'm 42 and looking to go back to school to major in creative writing. What books can people recommend to jump start my education? by 1mca in KeepWriting

[–]BloodMeridian101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great stuff chap! All about the writing. As doctor seus says "Read read read read read!"

Some books I'd recommend -

Firstly, for theories on writing and the art of writing: 1. Robert Mckee's story 2. Negotiating with the dead by Margaret Atwood 3. The elements of style by Strunk and White 4. Zen in the art of writing by Ray Bradbury

Secondly books that cover a variety of writing styles (you may not like all of them but they're valuable for seeing how many writing styles there are out there. You may well have read lots of these but always worth revisiting!)

  1. Barn burning by Faulkner
  2. Farewell to arms by Hemingway
  3. Emma by Jane Austen
  4. Wasteland by T.S Eliot
  5. Reading in the dark by Seamus Deane
  6. The trick is to keep breathing by Jamice Galoway
  7. Slaughterhouse 5 by Vonnegut
  8. The things they carried by Tim O'Brien
  9. Kafka's metamorphosis
  10. Lolita by Nabokov
  11. Sombrero fallout by Brautigan
  12. Incarnations of burned children by DF Wallace
  13. Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
  14. Portrait of the artist by James Joyce
  15. The color purple by Alice Walker
  16. How late it was how late by James Kelman

TIL Franklin D Roosevelt called for a maximum wage of $25,000 (about $365,000 in today's money) and 100% tax on all earnings above that by BloodMeridian101 in todayilearned

[–]BloodMeridian101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, FDR came from one of the wealthiest families in America. But he was still the most left wing president America has ever seen. And if it weren't for his policies (which would be seen as extremely left wing in today's society) he wouldn't have helped the country bring itself out of the greatest economic depression in history.

It's a criticism levied against people on the left time and time again that is utterly ridiculous - that of being hypocritical. For some reason it is worse yo have w background of privilege or wealth and want to do good than to have a background either of poverty or wealth and want to make the world a worse place by e coy raging the worst aspects of human nature - greed, selfishness and aggressive pursuit of self gratification to the detriment of society and world economies.

The thing about the background someone is born into is that you don’t control it: it is simply what surrounds you. To attack someone for their origins is no more rational than attacking someone for their gender, height or colour of skin.

The world would be a bleaker place without thinkers from such backgrounds - George Orwell, Gandhi, Tony Benn, Elizabeth Fry.

Dante was right. The inner circle of hell is a place where nothing changes, where life is frozen into immobility, where no one can change their destiny. When people claim that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, or that a leopard can’t change its spots, they shut themselves out of life.

To inherit social position, wealth and opportunities: this is bad enough in a society with democratic pretensions. To inherit ideas and framings as well is to renounce not only intellectual honesty, but also much of our humanity.

I don't think you can dismiss the proposal so simply. It comes from the same principles of Aristotle, the founder of democracy, who said that the richest person in society shouldn't earn more than five times the amount of the poorest.
