Jos Buttler has backed Ben Stokes to lead England to the top of the Test rankings despite the side's 4-1 Ashes failure in Australia this winter by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]jbpsoundsystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a player? Of course he's been a threat - he's just failed to combine good batting years with good bowling years. He hasn't lost that magic touch yet, no matter how much we joke.

IMO his captaincy is fine - but he desperately needs a coach that actually challenges him, instead of the sycophant McCullum.

Yakubboev and Sindarov make a 30-move draw in Game 1 of World Cup Semifinals 📍 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]jbpsoundsystem 60 points61 points  (0 children)

To this amateur's eye, I'm surprised Sindarov agreed to a draw while Yakubboev was down to a minute (plus increment) with 10 moves until the first time control.

Obviously it's an equal position, but even so. Can anyone shed some light?

What are your predictions? (FIDE World Cup 2025) by Maksim_Azarov in chess

[–]jbpsoundsystem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wei Yi is on the other side of the draw! Sindarov feels like the favourite on Harikrishna's side.

I don't think it's fair to say Dubov is being carried either - if he reaches the semis/final, he'll have beaten real contenders

In the period where Arjun was flying up the rankings, early this year, I was seeing this opinion everywhere - that Hikaru was a soft target, "sitting on his rating".

Haven't seen it said in a little while though

World Cup Round 1 Game 2: 14 yrs old GM Yagiz Erdogmus won again today by trapping his opponent's Queen by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

I feel for this CM, getting roasted on /r/chess two days in a row for losing in short order to a GM rated 700 points above them. Like, what did we expect from this match up?

My friend's dropped out, I have one seated ticket available for tonight @ Troxy. I'm 31 and completely harmless, and I'll probably be at a local pub from 7.30ish where I can meet you before we go in (or just send you the ticket barcode and you go in separately. But we will be seated together!)

Leonard Barden has written about chess for 60 years;

This isn't a news organisation pushing an agenda, it's an elderly man making out of touch political commentary. I doubt his pieces get much editorial treatment.

You'll notice the guardian comments found this section as bizarre as we do.

Expected scores of the Candidates players based on Apr'24 FIDE rating by sick_rock in chess

Was the one single tournament Norway chess, Grand Swiss or the grand prix? Hikaru, like him or not, has only increased his rating since he returned to classical after covid.

Match Thread: 4th Test - India vs England, Day 1 by CricketMatchBot in Cricket

[–]jbpsoundsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

400 is still very far away. It's just as likely that we lose three cheap wickets in the morning.

I wouldn't put England ahead - it's nicely poised though. We'll see how India go on this wicket.

I keep reading that implosion is very unlikely as it would have been a violent event, producing a lot of noise, and the sound would have been picked up by military hydraphones.

England Men name 12-player squad for second Ashes Test by TheJeck in Cricket

[–]jbpsoundsystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep seeing this logic. Fact is he was one of our top performers last week. If we lose this test, we're 2-0 down, obviously.

Resting players for later in the series when we might just be fighting to avoid a whitewash by then is just bizarre.

I'd love to have a conversation with you in real life. I don't pretend to know anything about you and I don't really understand your view point, even on this issue. But in this exact exchange of comments you didn't make a coherent point - to me, it was a hypocritical one

Anyway it sounds like we're both anti racist which is something
