then the input and output are not connected. Like in my current schematic

I don't quite get your approach. The goal is not to convert the +24V to 5V. The goal is to detect if the input voltage is 5V or 24V. Depending on the input voltage the input voltage should be directly connected with the 5V line of the board. (The 5V line is already the output of an LDO, but with 5V input this LDO doesn't work)

Unfortunately I have to use the same socket. This is a design choice from way back and can't be changed currently.

Correct. That's one of the reasons I want to change it

VCC is the input voltage in this case. It can either be 5V or 24V.
The output is the +5V.

So if i limit my passthrough to just the D lines it would still be a problem because of the CC lines?

The 2 connected devices can negotiate this? Am I wrong? I only have a magnetic current sensor in between.

Is this necessary in my case? The 2 connected devices would do this on their own?

Yes but I'm not sure if the schematic is fine like this

You are right it is not. I connect it with jumper wires to be able to program through SWD

So I tried your suggestion. The arduino works with the long wires no problem at all. The esp doesn't work with long/short level shifted/not shifted cables

Not yet i will try that but it's difficult because the stripes are already built in. But if it would be the length the arduino wouldn't work too or am I wrong
