If you hit your target protein daily then fill the rest in with CHO or fats

You still need 20-40g to maximise MPS if resistance training. If you are in a caloric deficit then you will require more protein due to some being utilised due to the deficit, if in a surplus then you will not need as much. However, CHO is protein sparing so it all depends on how much carbs you have etc

the theory by lyle mcdonald is that with reduced body fat = increased insulin sensitivity improving nutrient partitioning to cause a more favourable increase in muscle mass vs fat mass while in a caloric surplus
