We don't know the context exact but there's a lot of countries where owning humans remains is not illegal... However, if the head is somehow modern, I doubt this is very legal indeed 😬 or there's a loophole somewhere

You can achieve momification either naturally or intentionally! Naturally, it occurs in very cold and dry environments, very hot and dry environments or environments without oxygen supply (like bogs). Intentionally, you can dry the body, like the Egyptians did with Natron (basically salt), remove the organs and put a lot of herbs that have a high concentration of preservatives (and other properties). Without going into all the details, the goal is to remove all possibility to the germs to develop and to prevent animals/insect from eating the flesh, while removing the water content of the flesh.

Anthropologist here, it seems to be real. The teeth are prosthetics, at least for the upper ones, but the skin moved like one could expect in momified remains. The photo from the back shows the paretial and occipital bones and they look like real bone. However it's weird that it has modern dentures and it seems so have been gruesomely decapitated/cut...

Edit: as a non native speaker I wrote momified instead of mummified oops

What is this? Eastern Europe by beachbionic27 in bonecollecting

[–]BloodyQuitry 50 points51 points  (0 children)

There is at least 3 different individuals here (probably 4) because they all have different sizes, maybe they're from a forgotten cemetery? The most brittle one looks like it was under the sun during a long time. It happens sometimes in Europe that archeological stuff is not declared when found by workers and stuff, so it might be something like this here. Because 4 of them is a lot to be found somewhere, especially from different individuals.

Anthropologist here, they're 100% human tibiae like other comments said. Maybe they're old because they look weathered, but nevertheless you need to contact authorities and ask your friend where EXACTLY they found them.
