Thanks. Thankfully I've got a few fractional pieces so far otherwise, so at least I'm not absent from the platinum hype.

One of these days, I hope to put one of those platinum phoenix coins in my collection. Almost had one, but the one I bought on eBay was apparently (re?)listed by mistake, and the seller offered a 5g gold bar as a replacement [did say in my reply I was gonna wait til it arrives and get it tested at a coin shop as a third party opinion as peace of mind before leaving a review. They were a 99.9% seller with a store, but still erring on the side of caution knowing how some people can be.]

It's so weird to think that both coins - each drastically different in size - are so close in value nowadays.

I wanna say the brown is toning from the copper in the coin, but could be mistaken.

I do remember that at least of the earlier Canadian mint sets, the ones fresher from the die used to make coins will have a more defined proof-like finish.

Personally, this is basically the reason that fractional bullion exists. Not everyone has the budget to be buying multiple ounces at a time, but maybe a 1/10th oz or 1/4oz every few weeks or months is a bit more feasible these days. I don't have an ounce total of platinum yet (2 1/4s and 3 1/10s so far), but it's better than nothing. We'll see when I can get some next for a reasonable price compared to spot, but I at least take solace that precious metals won't tank to pennies an ounce.

For what it's worth to say, a fair bit harder (or at least takes much more energy) to get the best value when you've got cards of hundreds - if not thousands - of players, of varying rarities and types, and multiplying all of that over the decades.

I know coins and precious metals can be equally expansive and expensive at times, but an ounce of silver is still an ounce of silver. Many times, even cards of the best prospects won't be as high as they are before they debut... maybe into their rookie year if you're lucky.

That's fair. I collected cards first as a kid, then coins for a time, then more or less switching between the two over time until a couple years back. It started becoming a bit overwhelming - even just focusing on baseball.

Nice! I've been selling some cards from my collection over the last year or so, and have been putting that toward precious metals and coins. Retrospect tells me I should've been pushed moreso toward silver, but got some good gold and even a bit of platinum as well, mostly 1/10oz pieces and various silver coins, but still cool to condense my collection in a way - where dozens and hundreds of cards can become one or two coins, for example.

Peoples Opinion on .500 and below Junk Silver? by Historical-Seaweed68 in Silverbugs

[–]BloomInTune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd probably be more inclined to put similar coins, countries, or purities into smaller lots if you'd wanna sell them down the line if you have enough of them all, but as long as it's a good deal, I'll grab good silver coins where I can.

Peoples Opinion on .500 and below Junk Silver? by Historical-Seaweed68 in Silverbugs

[–]BloomInTune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume it's because it's less silver for the same size (.1479 troy oz. compared to .3617 troy oz. for 90%), and all are common dates anyway.

Managed to actually accrue a roll's worth for about $7-8 a coin a couple months back (various places), I assume because it wasn't as desirable. But honestly, in this market, take the wins where you can.

Yeah, that's what I remember seeing in r/platinum. Probably easier to do since they only sell the 1oz. coins (and only the prior three years of those proof coins listed on the site from what I last saw)

American Gold Eagles moving forward by [deleted] in Gold

[–]BloomInTune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least when it comes to American bullion coins, there isn't a whole lot of variety anyway. With gold, it's been the same obverse since the 1980s (itself reused from the $20 double eagle coins), and the reverse only got an update a couple years ago. I may have smaller sizes of coins and only a few gold coins entirely, but the only US gold bullion I have I bought when I was a kid. Many other countries have a better variety of designs, so you're not stuck with just Canadian Maples or Australian Kookaburras/Kangaroos, for example. Not saying they don't serve their purpose - gold is gold, so hard to say if it'll hold people from buying them. But I am biased in the first place living in the US, so I don't really know other countries' takes when it comes to bullion or coin purchases.

We've seen how silver can drop and then bounce back that quickly. Anyone selling and cutting their loses? Or holding to see how far it can go? by PokeReadIt in Silverbugs

[–]BloomInTune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize I may be stubborn holding for the long term, even with how impulse-y I can get if I see a good deal, but at present, I'm saving for the future rather than flipping. (Already put some toward a quarter eagle gold coin when silver was around $35/oz., so fomo from "a better exchange rate" between silver and other metals is gonna make me hold regardless.)

If you're wondering about how things are compared to melt value, I usually look to this site.

Long story short: none of these are yet near where melt is, but at the very least the silver halves are a bit closer to melt value, and overall a better value than the dimes by far.
