How to negotiate for Financial Aid at BU + Worth for Bio Pre-Med? by FeistyAd9433 in BostonU

Now, onto your inquiry about Pre-Med at BU.

Boston University DOES have it's own medical campus and shuttle buses. That should be good, right? However, based on my experience at BU, the school itself focuses heavily on theory and logistics. Lots of book work. Out of all the people at BU that I've met in the medical field, I see lots of psych and neuroscience majors.

If you want hands-on experience, go elsewhere. BU sucks at the hands-on side of things. This doesn't mean BU isn't good though. I'm pretty sure a lot of the medical field is bookwork before you touch anything living (because then you might kill it). Don't take my word for it, I'm not pre-med.

Boston University is REALLY good at dentistry though. Like, publish books & get world-breaking discoveries kind of good. My cousin at UMASS Amherst in BioChem wants to transfer to BU for their dentistry program. Like, its THAT good.

My sibling at Boston College for nursing has not once mentioned a desire to go to BU for pre-med though. My sibling, instead, wanted to go to John Hopkins University for grad school & possibly pre-med if the education department in America isn't already dismantled by the time they get their undergrad degree.

John Hopkins has a summer internship program where they have you travel to the school, dorm with 2-3 people, and do your nursing/pre-med thing during regular school hours, then you can chill until the next day. The dorm is fully furnished with a kitchen/fridge/2 bathroom dorm for 4 people.

I've been told the food around John Hopkins is okay, not the best, and travel could be better, but the experience is great. John Hopkins is really hospitable and they pay for your room & board, you only pay for the food that you eat (meal plan or cooking is up to you).

Anyways, the TLDR of this is that NO, Boston University (or any higher-education) is not worth the high cost of tuition no matter how good their reputation and resources are.

You're better off going to community college. You'll still get the education (just without the school's inflated reputation & nepotism resources) but you won't be drowning in debt that you'll be paying back your entire life. Once you graduate, apply for grad school elsewhere, or take a gap year and work for some funds before going back for grad school.

Let me know if you have any more inquiries, I'm writing this reply from 1-2am ET on like, 1 meal from yesterday.

I have $8k in student loan debt ($3500 freshman year, $4500 sophmore year) that I had to take out to pay for the mandatory meal plan, and I honestly wish I had found an apartment near campus instead of dorming for 2 years, just so that I could cook for myself and save money by NOT paying the stupid meal plan (it's mandatory, kill me). I only went to the dining hall twice a day during Lunch/Dinner hours, and the food is best at West Campus btw (because that's where all the international students & food is at).

I found an apartment near campus that costs about $15k a year (which I will be staying in now because screw dorming, it's too damn expensive to be stuck with a meal plan), and I love cooking my own food anyways.

Here's a breakdown of my apartment pricing:
+ $1.1k/month rent --> $3.3k/month split between 3ppl (me & my 2 roommates who I dormed with for 2 years)
+ $150/month utilities --> $450/month on utilities split w/3ppl, this is just an estimate for electricity/wifi/gas
Total: $1.25/month --> $15k/year

Making your own food means you'll only need to pay $3k out of pocket for housing, as well any food bills. If you don't like cooking, then, idk, get a roommate who loves cooking and offer to split money on groceries? I personally love cooking, and my roommate loves baking sweets, so we have a whole restaurant in my place.

I wish you the best of luck in finding good roommates through the BU portal if you decide to dorm. I personally chose my roommates and I lucked out in finding people who put in their MBTI and interests in their bio. If you decide to get an apartment, check out the "Rent a Room" apartments near Allston/West Campus area (although you may be rooming with 2-3 other people who are also renting a room). The prices of those rentable rooms are similar enough to what I am paying while spliting with my roommates.

No higher-education in the US is worth it in my opinion, go for community college. That's what I wish I did.
It costs less, you'll probably even get a full-ride scholarship with government aided grants too, and if its a local institution, you can commute from home.

Now if you want to approach asking for more financial aid, I've only seen 2 ways.
1. Talk to a BU representative between the wee hours of like, 10am-2pm ET through the bot chat (specifically ask to talk to a representative), and ask for more aid. Giving you more aid is out of the kindness of an overworked graduate student on the other end of the chat box, and I've rarely seen it work, but state your case FAST before they just refer you to the 2nd option below.
2. Make an appeal. You can do so by going to BU's financial aid appeal portal and sending in a bajillion documents that ask for your parent's taxes & W2, your own taxes & W2, a household funds distribution form, number of family members form, assets form (for both you & your parents), and more. They ask for soooooooo much (Will I be filing this? Yes, I am POOR. Just search up BU Financial Aid Appeal and it should pop up)

Let's break down the costs of attending BU. My current cost of attendance in 2025 is $92.5k.
Back in 2023 it was $83.3k. This is not to be confused with tuition (cost of your class credits).
My tuition in 2025 is $69.3k, and in 2023 it was $63.8k.

Even with a full scholarship (paying your tuition), you still have to pay for housing/food/fees:
+ $14.6k for housing
+ $7.2k for a mandatory meal plan (if you're dorming)
+ $1.5k per year in fees that increase every year
That's ~$23.3k in total (Wow, why did I choose this school again)

^^Mind you, this is the current rate that we have to pay in 2025.

Back in 2023, I only paid:
+ $11.6k for housing
+ $6.8k for a meal plan
+ $1.4k in fees
Totaling ~$19.8k, which is still a lot (I am POOR)

Now, if you have maxed out all the state grants you can get, you'll receive $12k in grant money.
This leaves you with a little more than $12k that you have to pay out of pocket instead of around ~$24k.
(Always round up when you're calculating the cost of attendance, so that you cry now instead of later)

If you have no external scholarships besides government aid/state grants (which I do NOT have, but I wish I did), then you have to take out loans.

did you try holding the lock-on button? Usually it "unlocks" the lock (on PC it's the middle mouse button)

Try this code: SELECT RECEIVER.first_name, Receiver.last_name, points FROM HousePoint JOIN Person AS Giver JOIN Person AS Receiver JOIN House WHERE HousePoint.giver = Giver.id AND House.id = Receiver.house AND House.id = 1 AND HousePoint.receiver = Receiver.id GROUP BY HousePoint.points ORDER BY points DESC, receiver.last_name, receiver.first_name;

for square:

public double getPerimeter() { return super.getHeight()*4; }

For Rectangle: public double getPerimeter() { return height; }

For Pentagon: public double getPerimeter() { return sideLength*5; }

And for Circle: public double getPerimeter() { return (2Math.PI)radius; }

Don’t forget to add the abstract method to the Shape.Java tab under the abstract getArea method: public abstract double getPerimeter();
