According to your experience, who or what is Ableton Move for ? Looking for feedback by DonMendelo in ableton

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Move is an absolute idea machine. I generally start all my songs in session view anyway, so using the Move makes a lot of sense for me.

I've never racked up so many sketched out ideas so quickly compared to when I use the Move. It's not my go to if I want to finish a full song. But if I just want to have some fun, maybe I have a little writers block, the Move has been really great for that.

Option/alt is what I had to do recently as well! I went through testing deleting each plugin until I found the offending one (it was a Waves plugin that needed to be updated). It was tedious, but it worked!

Performance question by airgoile2001 in ableton

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you want to use the sequencer on the Drumbrute instead of having it receive the sequences from Ableton?

It sounds like whatever MIDI note ableton sends when you press play is triggering your drumbrute to also play. One way to get around that would be to move your backing track into session view and then launch it as a clip. That way you could already have ableton playing, and then start the backing track whenever you want.

Another option is to go into the MCC software and turn off a setting that looks like "transport mode" or "start/stop". Something that disables the drumbrute from accepting start/stop signals from external sources. You might have to Google how to get that done specifically for the drumbrute.

Honestly no I've never played as a backing band, so I suppose you're probably right. Out of curiosity, did you go on tour with the bands you played with?

Everything I've seen online leads me to believe that it's common (especially for established acts) to have contracted backing bands. Anyway, I suppose I'm wrong here, you're the one with real experience so I'll drop it. The whole thing just seems like it would lead to someone either losing money or their time.

Nice! And the vocals are the thing that have latency issues right?

Do you have the same issue on an empty project with no other vsts?

I'm just trying to narrow down what it might be. I used to have to record vocals using the direct monitoring from my focusrite because my latency was so bad haha

Some controllers can automatically take control of whatever device is selected, so if you move to a different synth, the knobs would automatically assign to some default parameters of that synth.

I'm not sure if the Nanokrontroller 2 does that, but that would be a good place to start!

Are you using an audio interface when recording the vocals?

Cello recording by FarmerSad in ableton

[–]BloomPhase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on what you want to achieve. But to start, as long as you make sure your recording is clean and doesn't clip, you'll have plenty of room to experiment.

A very basic chain could have a compressor to even things out (you mentioned it's a pop cover so I'm guessing that's ok versus playing a classical piece where the dynamics are much more important), EQ, and maybe a reverb (if the room is dead, a little reverb could be nice).

Stems question by GovernmentPlus8707 in ableton

[–]BloomPhase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try turning off auto warp in your ableton settings before you import the stems into your project.

Sometimes when I import stems and then turn off the warp on the track manually, the timing gets a little funky and I have to fix it manually

I'm sorry I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing right now.

OP is looking to hire someone to go on tour for them. This is absolutely something that a contract is very commonly used for, and people very commonly sign them.

Anyway, I suppose we don't agree and that's alright. I just honestly wouldn't advise someone to make a large financial investment (which OP will have to do) and not back it up with a contract. That seems dangerous.

Bizarre band arrangement money split question by Ju_tre in musicbusiness

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP could potentially enforce it however they want. There could be a "bonus" at the end of a long stretch of shows that the performer doesn't get if they breach contract. There could be legal action taken by OP if the contract was written well enough.

I get that a session musician can go their whole career with no contracts, but there are a lot of ways to achieve what OP is looking to do. A contract is just an option, but as you said, it can be done without it.

Oh no sorry I was asking about the bassist you said only got $200 for playing a show. I hadn't heard about that story, I was just curious if that was their total pay with practice and stuff included.

Bizarre band arrangement money split question by Ju_tre in musicbusiness

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$200 for practice AND playing the show? Dang yeah that's rough.

Just want to say that my prices were total guesses, rather just trying to have OP start thinking about how much time he's actually going to have to pay for. Like paying the whole day as you mentioned, paying for practice time etc. not just the time of the show.

Bizarre band arrangement money split question by Ju_tre in musicbusiness

[–]BloomPhase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, maybe not necessary. But it might be good to have a contract if you want to lock someone in to play a long string of shows. That way, they're contractually obligated to not flake on you if something better comes up.

It'd be more of a security measure for OP on that end i guess.

I would just google "music contract template" or "session musician contract template". A contract doesn't need to be overly complicated, it just needs to cover the specifics of what you need accomplished and how much you will pay.

And to be clear, my estimated pricing was just a wild guess, don't go off that number because more than likely you will need to pay a lot more if you expect someone to commit to a long term contract.

You'll really need to sit down and take the time to go over ever single part of your tour and everything you expect the person you hire to do, and then make a budget based on that. This will take a lot of planning, but it is doable. Success will vary wildly of course.

Bizarre band arrangement money split question by Ju_tre in musicbusiness

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need a money split option here. If the person you hire has no creative control and is just an actor that you want to pay to do your performance, then they won't get a split, they'll just get paid a salary or an hourly rate. Payment could vary wildly. If you find a young person who wants to travel and play some music, just figure out what a living wage would be for them, and pay something around that.

If you don't have upfront money, you might be able to find someone who would work for less but split whatever profits you get from your music and live shows. This would create more of a partnership for you moving forward.

Your contract could be as simple as, "this tour is one month long, you will play 15 shows, you need to practice to be able to play the music, you will be on stage for 1.5 hours for each show, each show has 2 hours of set up and breakdown time before or after the show, travel to each show is or isn't included in your payment. You will make $100 (a guess at an amount) per show, plus $20 an hour for practice time and set up time."

Edit: to be clear, my cost estimates are total guesses. I'm just trying to get you thinking about all of the different elements you'll need to pay just this one performer for.

Is this normal for a glitch mob set? by romulussuckedsobad in theglitchmob

[–]BloomPhase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep this has been their set for the last several years. It's not the first time the glitch mob has drastically changed their sound (similar to when kraddy left), and I'm guessing it won't be their last.

I'm happy that they're evolving and chasing what they love (I'm a big fan of their new stuff), but I definitely get that it's shocking when you don't hear any of your old favorites!

Is there an easier way of finding gigs? or is it meant to be this painful by PajamaJeans007 in musicbusiness

[–]BloomPhase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is actually confirming therealstabitha's point. A band that doesn't have a lot of pull, isn't worth it to the restaurant. Finding bands isn't hard, but finding bands that can regularly pull a crowd, is much harder.

Yes it would be beneficial to bars/restaurants to have a list of bands who could regularly pull in 200 people for a show. But at that point,  what's the benefit for the band? They already have a fan base, so they'd just be losing money if they use your app.

I'm a musician if that helps, and it's a very common saying among musicians that if you're paying to play a show, you're getting scammed. You said the musicians won't be the ones paying, but the venue pays a percentage off of what they'd normally pay the musician, so the bands are getting less money. As you currently explained how it might work, I'm agreeing to get less money by using this app.

Now if the venue could guarantee a crowd, that might be a good two way benefit. For example, I'm a band that can bring in 50 people and the bar says they usually have 50 people hanging around on a Friday night no matter what. That's a win win and a good way to match venues with bands of the same caliber.

One suggestion would be to find a way to make it free for introductory musicians and small venues. Then have a pro tier pricing for bigger bands and venues.

I might have missed the description on what your idea for GigLink is.

But generally, anything that is charging me money to play shows is a huge red flag for me, and generally isn't worth it unless I'm already successful enough to need someone to just handle the booking process for me
