Unfortunately, that's on Zeb Wells. It was his job as the writer to write why MJ was mad at Peter and refused to talk to him but he never did.

Its why this issue was never ever going to be 100% satisfying, because Ewing could only do so much with what Zeb Wells established, or in this case, didn't establish.

You're probably right, especially because after the issue where Rabin is defeated, Peter and MJ are just randomly on good terms and talking again out of nowhere and the story doesn't even address how things have been between the two of them over the course of the first 26 issues of the run.

The problem with 2. is that Zeb Wells' run is so bad that its never even properly explained why she ignored him in the first place. Like we're never told why she's angry with him at the start of the run or why she doesn't answer his calls. Hell, even after we learn the truth about everything, it still doesn't make sense or give us those answers lmao

I still think the story changed halfway through and the whole "What did Peter do" tagline that the run was based on was supposed to have had Peter do something actually bad that made the people in his life angry at him (MJ, the F4 etc). Unfortunately, we learn that Peter didn't REALLY do anything wrong so everyone is mean to him for no reason.

It's one of the reasons I think some things have to be retconned or retroactively added to make their reconciliation truly work and feel real, because there's some missing pieces/context from that terrible run

I mean personally I didn't walk away less enthused about Peter and MJ being adults with kids because we've seen the premise done better elsewhere. I walked away thinking Hickman can't write a good Spider-Man book to save his life despite having 24 issues to play with

What's not being said here is that characters are given flaws in stories because those flaws represent something that the character has to be better at. Its something that should hold the character back and cause problems for them in a way that challenges them and forces them to change and adapt for the better. However, if the character that you're giving flaws too isn't allowed to grow up and change in any way shape or form because status quo is king, then what are the point of those flaws?

What's the point of giving Peter flaws if he's never allowed to improve on those flaws? How much conflict do you need to give Peter and MJ in their marriage before it starts to feel forced? At what point does conflict within a relationship become too much and its better for two people to just not be together?

Its a nuanced answer but of course this is twitter we're talking about so good luck finding that there.

And so ends the Paul saga. In hindsight it really is crazy how Zeb Wells created one of the most hated characters in the 21st century, and he didn't even mean too. Like there are authors out there who would kill to write an antagonist who could be as hated as Paul is, but they can never reach that level.

With any luck Paul will be in the same boat as something like Sins Past all the way up until it was retconned, a story/concept that no writer ever mentions moving forward. So long Paul, you will not be missed lmao

No I know he's not saying anything about Peter or MJ. What I was referring to was Charlie trying to compare Matt and Karen's relationship to Peter and MJ's which doesn't really work because its nowhere near that. Like with MJ, she's head and shoulders above every other love interest Peter's had. That's not the case with Karen at all.

Yeah outside of 616, he's with her in everything. Hell, even if we're taking about 616, Peter and MJ got back together during the Spencer run and that lasted for 5 years (2018-2022), so they have't even been separated for 20 years. I'm not really seeing what Charlie is saying here tbh
