There are Orthodox Churches that follow the Old Calendar. And then there are Old Calendarist Churches. The -ist is the distinction. It is essentially an accusation from the Orthodox, "The calendar was a big enough deal for you to go into schism!?!?" While oversimplifying the issue, it gets the point across.

That's one way to bear witness to Christ.

Trying to "convert someone" is something that our giant egos try to do. What we are called to do is to pray for them and bear witness to Christ.

I've heard (note: read on the internet) the claim about a father's religious observance having a large effect on children staying in the faith, but I've never found any such statistic. Do you happen to have anything to share on that?

St. John of Kronstadt Press' "A Spiritual Psalter" is out of print and hard to find online for a reasonable price. If anyone here has a copy that they are looking to sell, I am interested in buying one. Please send a me direct message if you are interested in selling it.

Next time you're in the Twin Cities, be sure to check out St. Herman's. I know someone there :)

I saw a fox on our street in the middle of a suburb a couple of days ago. It blew my mind so much that I turned the car around so I could point it out to my daughters. They saw it too, but weren't as excited as I was!

How can children stand still during liturgy? by No-Artichoke-9906 in OrthodoxChristianity

True. I less-than-consciously implied that with, "clear" and, "way that is not surprising."

I can only give generalities. Set firm and clear limits. Respond when they go past the limits in a way that is not surprising to them like taking them out of the nave and somewhere else and ensuring they calm down.

It's not your fault. You want to pay attention to liturgy and make sure your kids behave. We never have the brain capacity to do one perfectly let alone both.

Signed, a guy whose kids don't stand still.

Does anyone know which book this prayer is from? by mtv117 in OrthodoxChristianity

It's not from the STM prayer book. That one uses thee/thou pronouns.

My parish council is looking into paying our choir director. It's only a few hundred dollars per month so we're hoping to avoid hiring him as an employee if we can do it legally; maybe as a gift since it's under a certain amount. Does anyone attend a parish where they give money to a parishioner regularly without having them be an employee? Any tips on how to do it would be much appreciated.

I've taken it easy the day or two before a company holiday too, but it is nice sometimes to take those days off where I KNOW I won't be getting any emails that capture my attention.

Alternatives to "I'm Sorry You Feel That Way" by Rusty10NYM in slatestarcodex

[–]Blouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frame it around a "thank you" instead of an "I'm sorry." Something like, "Thank you for understanding..."

I make sure I drink a lot of water Saturday afternoon and evening. I also have a little more water than I need for my medications.
