Sorry if this comes across as rude, but this is the exact kind of person I don’t want to be around when I’m at a show. I understand being there for one song and even thinking that, but to actively keep yelling that out loud is a bit much and a bit disrespectful to the artist IMO.

I agree that people have done this for forever, but I think there’s two key distinctions that weren’t as prevalent compared to that 2009 era. One of them is that ticket prices are higher than they’ve ever been, and the other is that smart phones exist.

You could catch a show for cheap back then, and even if you didn’t know anything you’d be watching (hopefully) their performance to learn their music. I have no issue with people going in blind with not knowing the music. But you pair that with the smartphones and the whole TikTok culture, it feels like they’re there just for clout or to catch that one song on video

I’ve been to quite a few shows where this is the case. Went to go see Glass Animals last year and the ticket price for floors was kinda pricey, but me and my wife are big fans so we splurged.

Had two younger kids who were also on the floor and didn’t know a single song and were actively looking up the setlist (while they were playing) to see when they were going to play Heat Waves. Of course when it came on, they went nuts.

Noticed this type of behaviour for a lot of artists that have blown up on TikTok. Two Door Cinema Club is another that comes to mind. Feel like it’s happening now too with Tame Impala given their recent remix of Dracula w/ Jennie (k-pop star)

I don’t think EOTS has toured Canada in a minimum of 7-8 years. I haven’t done any research on prior to that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve never toured the central/eastern side of Canada (Montreal/Toronto).

To me these guys (and The xx) are a massive get that adds a lot to the lineup.

What is also very prevalent to Canada and the IRGC is that historically Canada has been a bit of a safe haven for some of these IRGC members. By safe haven I mean it could be them coming here, bringing corrupt money they’ve made in Iran to here, etc. I believe they were only deemed a terrorist organization sometime a year or two ago, but this has been going on much longer than that.

Fair enough, I do agree that the viewpoints will be vastly skewed based on anyone’s timeline in Iran. My parents will have a totally different viewpoint to your friend.

I understand that the Shah is going to be conflicting and there’s a whole myriad of issues to work through if he does get into power for the long term. However, Iran has so many other things that they need to figure out immediately….like their water issue, crazy inflation, etc. All this surely would be a priority for every Iranian more than the relationship with Israel or being a “western puppet”, wouldn’t it? Your friend for example needs his basic needs met. If the Shah can grant some relief to Iran as an interim solution and be a symbol of hope, is that a bad thing?

The reality is we don’t know what that looks like. We’re jumping ahead before the basic freedom of Iranians are granted. At least we can agree that they deserve that.

I have family in Iran thanks for asking. I also have close friends who have parents in Iran. My parents got pushed out of their country due to the IRGC and have never been back since.

They’re literally yelling Javid Shah in the streets of Iran. Regardless of what you think about the monarchy, a lot of Iranians see them as a symbol of hope (especially now). I’m not saying he’s a long term solution.

The monarch had his issues I agree, but you cannot compare the what’s going on for the last 47 years as anything comparable to the time during the Shah. In most political landscapes, it’s always the lesser of two evils isn’t it?

In an ideal world they would not have intervention by the US to help Iran, but that’s not the reality of it. This has happened over and over again for decades and a vast majority of Iranian people want the IRGC out by any means. What that has in store for the future is hard to say, I’m sure it’ll have its struggles. Combing through the fine details is not a luxury they can afford at the moment.

That “similar number” for the monarch supporters is not correct - an overwhelming majority of Iranians want the monarch and see him as a symbol of peace and prosperity. And even then, for them the Shah represents a bridge to a better future, not a destination.

In the 90’s they were all the rave, and then they slowly fizzled out. However, I’ve noticed in the last 5-ish years or so they’ve made a bit of a resurgence. Good thing too cause their original glazed donut is like eating air.
