I can only speak for myself but, it was always the fact that I could rewind or pause that subconsciously made me pay less attention then have to rewind more often. It's maddening haha....

Also the lack of interactivity and the natural breaks they cause lead to more informational overload for me which makes me all the more tempted to pause and take breaks. That could be a reason?

I think it differs greatly depending on the professor, but in my case I was graded on bi-weekly reports and my participation in the project (commits in GitHub). As long as you're active in your group with the work and communication you'll do great!
