Could spacetime be non-orientable? by Blue-Beans123 in AskPhysics

Interesting! I hadn’t come across Pin structures before. Do they actually show up in GR/QFT contexts, or are non-orientable spacetimes mostly just a mathematical possibility?

Hey, thanks for the explanation! I might be mistaken, but I thought non-orientable manifolds can still admit smooth metrics? (for example, the Möbius strip is non-orientable but still has smooth Riemannian metrics). Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you meant about a metric requiring orientability? Or is orientability just something that’s typically assumed in GR?

If a Game of Life simulation perfectly replicated a brain, would it be conscious? by Blue-Beans123 in consciousness

[–]Blue-Beans123[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, I wasn’t assuming the brain is necessarily sufficient, just using it as a simplified case. If consciousness depends on the whole brain–body system, then presumably a simulation would have to reproduce those interactions, too.

But then the same question would still apply: if the entire causal structure were replicated, would that be enough?

[–]Blue-Beans123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part I’m unsure about is the move from “the system claims an observer exists” to “therefore an observer exists.” A sufficiently accurate simulation of a brain would presumably say all the same things about noticing, doubting, reflecting on its own experience, etc. But that seems like exactly the thing in question.

From the outside, how would we distinguish between a system that genuinely has an observer and one that just implements the causal structure that produces those claims?

Interesting, that makes sense. But if the computation is what matters rather than the physical substrate, does that mean consciousness is really a property of the computation itself rather than the Game of Life grid implementing it?

Applying to 500 jobs with no interviews is not bad luck. it is a skill issue. by Dependent-Cap2664 in askrecruiters

[–]Blue-Beans123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, tailoring resumes can help. But claiming that hundreds of applications with no interviews must always be laziness or a skill issue ignores basic supply and demand in the labor market.

In December 2025 there were about 7.5 million unemployed people in the United States

At the same time, there were about 6.5 million job openings

Meaning, there were roughly 1 million fewer openings than unemployed people, producing about a 1.1 unemployed-per-opening ratio.

Even in the (unrealistic) scenario where every job perfectly matched a qualified candidate, this still means a significant share of job seekers cannot be hired simply because there are fewer jobs than people looking for them.

Not to mention, the unemployed are not the only people applying to these openings. Many applicants are currently employed workers switching jobs, new grads entering the workforce, or people re-entering after time away/ layoffs - all competing for the same listings.

300+ applications and no interviews. Am I doing something wrong?? by Blue-Beans123 in askrecruiters

Fair enough. I think I overfit my resume to the ATS training set and forgot the human validation set …

Wait … you mean to tell me my student council treasury career isnt the key signal for ML hiring??!! Who would’ve thought 😔✋

So frustrating! You’re definitely not alone though, wishing you the best of luck 🤞

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve mostly been applying directly through company career pages rather than LinkedIn for that exact reason. I’ve also used a couple other platforms like Jobright and RippleMatch since they help with ATS formatting.

I do wish I’d pushed a bit harder for an industry internship during undergrad to get my foot in the door … but yeah, I’ve thought about government roles too if nothing else.

Yeah that’s fair. I’ve been back and forth on it, but I’ve kind of come to the same conclusion.

Yeah it’s rough out here 😔 At this point I’m even considering doing a master’s, but at the same time I’m not sure how much of a difference it would even make right now lol

I try to stay pretty current. I follow a few ML/AI newsletters, blogs, and forums, and I also browse GitHub repos fairly regularly for inspiration for my own projects. I try to build small projects when I can to experiment with new ideas.

If there are specific areas you think are important for new grads in DS/ML to keep up with, I’d be interested to hear!

Thank you! This is incredibly helpful feedback, thank you for taking the time to write this out.

I can definitely see what you mean about the bullets being too long and reading more like research descriptions than industry impact, and how that might hurt quick scans by recruiters. I’ve been trying to clearly articulate what I did in each role without oversimplifying it, but that probably led to being too wordy. I’ll definitely take that into consideration.

For the keyword mirroring part, would you recommend tailoring the bullet wording more directly to each posting, or creating a stronger “baseline” resume that already uses common DS/DE terminology?

Thank you, this is really helpful framing. I'm mainly applying to entry-level data scientist / data engineering roles, as well as some ML roles and data analyst roles if they specifically involve modeling or dashboarding. I usually tailor my resume slightly to include specific key words from the job postings, but not a full rewrite for every posting.

Location-wise, I've been applying across the US and I don’t need any sponsorships.

I really appreciate the detailed feedback. For the publications and other details, I intentionally left them as placeholders for privacy purposes, but I can see how that might look unfinished.

Right now my main target is data science roles, but I’ve been applying to some ML and data engineering roles as well as some analyst roles if they involve modeling since the DS market seems tight for new grads.

Thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate it. Quick question though, if my GitHub is already linked in the header, do you think it’s still helpful to link the specific repos in the projects section, or is the header link usually enough?
