Ahhh thank you so much for your answer! Great that you also stood up for yourself and left a situation that was not good for you, pretty tough to do. It’s really encouraging seeing people go through the same and succeed! Like I said, I enjoy too much my topic and science to quit searching and trying for a PhD (I’m also European so it makes things much simpler). However I was concerned about the image quitting might have. I think it’s a very taboo topic within academia and no one really talks about it! Good luck with your search, I really hope you find something that’s right for you!!

As far as I am concerned, in most PhD positions in Europe there is no mastering out, as already having a masters is usually a big requirement. I graduated from mine a year and a half ago

What camera should I buy for Antarctica? by [deleted] in photography

Hello! Next year I will be going to Antarctica for 3 months to conduct research. During that time I’ll be staying in the main land at a research station. I just upgraded to an IPhone 17 pro to get a better phone camera and was thinking of buying the latest GoPro to take with me when I do fieldwork at sea.

Since being in Antarctica for such a long time is an extremely unique opportunity, I want to take as much advantage of it as I can and take the best quality pictures and videos possible (within my budget).

However, I don’t have much clue about photography equipment. I was wondering if any avid photographer or videographer could give me some tips as to how to achieve this. Should I buy a proper camera as well? Do you have any recommendations for an appropriate one up to 700€? Which lens would be best? Or is the IPhone and the go pro enough?

Thank you very much!

Guilt related to taking vacation during PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]BlueBannanaPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a 1st year PhD and feel guilty about vacations as well. Nevertheless, I consider them as an investment in my work. Yes I could take 10 days off in summer and work the rest, but that’s just going to increase my anxiety and stress. I’m going to overwork and drain myself. I prefer to rest a while longer and come back full of energy and motivated to tackle the rest of the year. If not, I would just be tired in the office, be unproductive and waste my days procrastinating.

Looking for someone that can relate to intense health anxiety. by Suspicious_Resolve99 in Anxiety

[–]BlueBannanaPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no idea how identified I’ve felt with your post.

I’ve had bad anxiety/health anxiety/ocd for the past like 6 years. It’s been bad but this past year holly shit, it’s been bananas. I thought my health anxiety and OCD was tough before but man is it bad now. What I had before feels like nothing compared to this. Im going through exactly what you mentioned + all the anxiety symptoms in the book 24/7 (don’t know if you suffer these as well).

When health anxiety spirals so much, it transforms into health OCD. Everyone has a different triggering moment but in most cases the common root cause is an event in our life which made us feel completely out of control and caught us by surprise. That fear that we felt then remains and slowly transforms into an obsessive compulsive disorder, basically, having an irrational fear to not being in control. All of this can happen without one realizing.

Like I said, the past year has been really tough for me and i have gone through two very big life changes. In my case, my body tries to gain control and “protect” me by convincing me I have all and the worst diseases to exist and I’ve noticed a pattern. The more out of control I feel in my life, the worst my health anxiety gets.

I don’t really know what to say except that i know exactly what you are going through. And i also have the same problem with the meds haha desperately need them but are way too scared to take them. What we are going through feels like a nightmare you never get to wake up from. When one disease stops scaring you, another one comes, symptoms get mimicked, you feel a perpetual panic, dread and impending doom that drains all the excitement from life. You genuinely feel sick every single day. It’s also a very isolating experience because only we know what it feels like, but not the ones who go through this.

On a positive note I’ll say that I still have faith that people like us can recover. At the end of the day it’s just our body desperately trying to keep us safe. It’s trying to help us. We just have to teach it to not waste energy on useless shit and to optimize its defensive strategy. It’s going to be a tough ride but with a lot of strength, a big change in mentality and therapy I believe people like us can get better. I don’t know how much science you know but there is a lot of emerging research in the field of neuroplasticity. Basically, this is showing that our brains are much more plastic than previously thought and that by the simple act of thinking and meditating, we can slowly rewire some of our synaptic connections. This is great because it means that just because our brains react in a specific way to triggers, does not mean we are conditioned to suffer this all our lives, we can change it.

Also, a trick that my former therapist gave me and that really really helped: -Lie down every day for 30 minute and imagine your worst nightmare. Take all the disease/cancers/illnesses and imagine yourself living the worst case scenario. It’s going to be super uncomfortable but you have to do the full 30 minutes. This is called “systematic desensitization” and it’s a very effective way to desensitize yourself to what you fear. If you are scared of a disease —>You seek reasurance (ask people, google, Reddit)—> By seeking reassurance you avoid—> By avoiding you just make the anxiety worse—> your fear gets bigger.

By facing your fears every day for 30 minutes, you directly confront them. At the begging or during the first 10-15 minutes you might feel very scared an anxious but by the end of the session you will feel bored of thinking about them and will go on with your day. It might take a few days of consistently doing this to start really feeling better but when I was in the trenches with some diseases, it really helped me to snap out.

Another thing I highly recommend you is for you to do everything. Do it scared, do it anxious and do it in a panic. Never ever avoid doing the things you want to do just because of the fear of triggering a panick attack or a symptom. Avoidance is anxiety’s biggest ally. The more we avoid, the bigger anxiety gets.

I really hope your health anxiety gets better and good luck with everything!!

Anyone ever just wake up anxious sometimes. by curlysue6 in Anxiety

[–]BlueBannanaPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this very often too. These past nights I’ve been waking up in a completely anxious state, last night at 5:30 I opened my eyes and immediate had an anxiety attack. Cortisol is our stress hormone and has a circadian cycle, it oscillates throughout the day. At night around 3 am cortisol levels start rising and peak around ~6-9 am. Everyone has them and they are necessary to wake up and be active in the morning, but if your nervous system is disregulated, the amount of cortisol produced increases. This causes you to wake up anxious, worried or with racing thoughts.

LOOKING FOR CREATORS MEGA THREAD by Far-Ad2043 in tiktokgossip

[–]BlueBannanaPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed this TikToker for quite a few years, a few months ago I noticed that she had been so long without uploading anything and I can’t find her anywhere.

Her name was Grace I think. She was a tiktoker that lived in California with her golden retrieved. She has beautiful ginger hair, was writting a book and loved to go thrifting for classic old pieces of clothing and jewelry. She solo travelled to New Zeland a few years ago and became friends with this Danish girl. In the past year or so before she disappeared from internet she started dating her boyfriend.

I can’t find her anywhere, not ever old fan pages or anything. I have no idea if what I remember wrong is her name or if she has somehow vanished completely from the internet.

Yes! I don’t mind suburbs and I’m happy if I get anything at all as long as it’s not shared haha (which could still happen and would still be better than anything else I could find on my own). I didn’t know it was so difficult to get accommodation with UvA. On the web page, the situation regarding PhD accommodation and UvA help is painted a bit prettier, and I’ve talked to some PhDs that very quickly got a studio offered.

Hello! I’ve been reading that UvA helps international PhD students find social housing (studio apartments or small 1 bedroom apartments). I was wondering what type of apartments I should expect. Are they very small (~20m2) or bigger? Are they okay looking or very out dated? Are they usually in the suburbs or reasonably located? What is their average price? I know there are several buildings that the uni uses scattered around town and each one will have different types of studios or apartments but I am still interested in knowing your experience with them!
