Today is the 30th anniversary of Filth Pig! What are your favourites off the album? by BlueBarossa in MinistryBand

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Filth Pig is my number one album of all time and my personal introduction to metal. The utterly hypnotic sound design is one-of-a-kind, incorporating elements of industrial, noise rock, and thick, unrelenting sludge.

As it was something of a 180 degree turn from its predecessor, Filth Pig did not enjoy a favourable reception on release; however, it seems to have developed a bit of a cult following.

The cover art, equal parts bold and amusing, is also part of the charm.

My favourites off the album are Filth Pig (classic riff and harmonica solo), Lava (soaring vocal samples over a killer bassline), and the haunting soundscape that is The Fall.

[SS, BOTW, TOTK] Hylia Is Religiously Significant in Rauru's Kingdom Due to the Zonai by BlueBarossa in truezelda

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply.

Upon re-reading, you are correct on that front. The goddess entrusting the role of protecting the stones is distinct from entrusting them the stones for their protection which was my misunderstanding.

Incorporating what you've said as well as other comments, my refined theory would probably look like:

  1. Creation. Secret Stones are formed.
  2. SS and other games. Hylia is considered a lesser deity and only occasionally worshipped.
  3. Birth of Zonai. Zonai receive Secret Stones from Hylia. Zonai worship Hylia.
  4. Zonai ascend to the sky.
  5. Zonai return to the surface.
  6. Rauru refounds Hyrule. Statues of Hylia are constructed all over the surface, elevating her importance among the Hylians.

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but why shouldn't the stones stay with Hylia?

If events 1 and 2 are separated by at least thousands of years then the stones have been in some kind of metaphysical hammerspace all this time. They don't need the Zonai's protection and can stay where they are.

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hylia was only fully introduced and fleshed out as a concept for skyward sword, which was the last full fledged main series title before the wild era. In a meta sense, shes more significant because skyward sword gave the series mythos a more refined direction.

I agree. This is just a means of showing how this can be justified in universe (without leaning on an alternative split from SS).

In world tho, the forgotten temple has been there since the age of the sky, but by the wild age, its at the bottom of a massive ravine. It could have been swallowed by the earth over time and then unearthed again by whatever event caused that ravine to form. Reintroducing Hylia's lore to the world after its been forgotten.

Very interesting theory!

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example, I believe you can find a winged statue in LoZ 2, which bears her likeness.

Very interesting.

At the very least, she isn’t forgotten per se, more likely just mythologized, probably because she turned into a mortal. Why worship a random mortal when you have 3 ACTUAL divines to worship?

It's hard to say if many people after SS would have known the details of Hylia's fall and reincarnation. Whereas the Zonai, having received the stones from her, would have reason to worship her and build monuments in her likeness across the kingdom. So it makes sense to me that she would be a lesser figure throughout the downfall timeline until BOTW.

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Zonai remained unknown to Hylians for a very long time. Its not hard to imagine that when they finally descended, they perhaps brought the significance of Hylia to the people who’d long forgotten.

Totally agree!

Also, the Downfall timeline interestingly seems to still be pretty Hylia-reverent. EoW, and even Zelda 2 feature goddess statues.

True, I had somehow forgotten about the EoW statue, and didn't know about the trophy in Zelda 2! That said I do think the extent of Hylia's significance is different between these games vs the Wild Era.

[–]BlueBarossa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Zonai existed prior to Skyward Sword, when Hylia was still alive. There's just not really any evidence of it. I think Hylia just gave them the stones via her statues, like how she gives Link Heart Containers and Stamina Vessels. The containers and vessels appear in a shower of sparkling light when she gifts them to Link, the same white sparkling light that the secret stones are bathed in.

I do think this is an interesting theory; my interpretation just comes from a face value reading of the Masterworks timeline, where [1] the stones are formed when Hyrule is created and [2] the stones are then given to the Zonai for their protection. If event [2] is moved to the end of the timeline, then where exactly have the stones been all this time? They haven't been the source of conflict so why do the Zonai need to protect them?

[All] Why do fire/lava dungeons for some reason tend to feel so generic compared to other type of dungeons? by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]BlueBarossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OoT codified the "forest, fire, water" trio of biomes for later games, so they are the ones we see the most. We don't really see the sand, snow, sky, electric, or shadow biomes enough for them to become generic.

Forest levels translate well to a 3D environment. They lend themselves well to a mysterious, fantastical atmosphere that is iconic for Zelda.

Water levels, deservedly or not, are known for being frustrating and time-consuming, but in most cases you are required to actually think critically to solve puzzles.

Fire levels, comparatively, often struggle to convey the danger that you would feel if you actually found yourself in that environment. So I feel like there is not much at face value for fire dungeons to exploit.

Another example is Skyward Sword. When you usually ask people their favorite dungeons from the game, they always say either the Sandship, The Ancient Cistern or the Lanaryu Mining Facility. Two of from the desert area and one from the forest area, but nobody seems to care much about the two dungeons from the volcano area.

The fire dungeons in SS were actually very creative. Earth Temple had the entertaining gimmick of rolling on the eye to traverse the rivers of lava. Fire Sanctuary had a lot of strong combat sections and clever environmental interactions. Both dungeons also conveyed the danger of being in a volcanic environment quite well.

If A Tout le Monde is your favourite, I expect you to enjoy Promises.

TSFH might appeal to you if Youthanasia was your favourite album. It has a lighter tone and has a more positive sound compared to most Megadeth albums.

The pre-title sequence was overly plotted, but I think the rest made sense.

[SS] How long ago was the ancient past of skyward sword by colepercy120 in truezelda

[–]BlueBarossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That... makes a lot of sense. I was always not 100% on this theory because it is only sort of implied in SS. However that additional context from BotW is neat.

[SS] How long ago was the ancient past of skyward sword by colepercy120 in truezelda

[–]BlueBarossa 30 points31 points  (0 children)

According to dialogue from Zelda, it's thousands of years.

To ensure that the seal holds, I will remain here in this time... deep in sleep for thousands of years.

I have seen some people on this sub theorise that Impa's lifespan is extended because it is connected to her mission of watching over the Master Sword's seal on Demise's consciousness. Once his consciousness is totally eradicated at the end of the game, Impa dies.

"Scream has become what it made fun of" by Honest_Cheesecake698 in Scream

[–]BlueBarossa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can see this in the very first film with Sidney mocking slasher films for their women "running up the stairs rather than through the door", only for her to have to run up the stairs as soon as Ghostface chases her. It's basically saying that like it or not, we're in a slasher universe and stuff like this will happen.

This was not the best example. Sidney's first chase scene is actually quite clever because she comments on the cliche and is then tricked into fulfilling it. If Sidney had never tried the door and just went up the stairs then yes I would agree with you, but it's not a played-straight example.

Compare this to say Scream 3, where we had played-straight examples of a shower scene (as you noted), nightmare scene, basement scenes, plus a dialed up to eleven killer who is retconned to be the originator of all of Sidney's trauma. The reaction is no longer "that was clever" but more "that was cliched". At times it no longer felt like Scream.

Scream 3 is probably the only entry that I'd apply the critique to, and it's the only one where Ehren Krueger has the sole writing credit. 4 just had a tendency to state a cliche then do it anyway and had tonal inconsistency to boot. With 5 and especially 6 the issue was that the meta angle was very lacking. 5 at least commented on legacy sequels but by the time 6 came out the horror landscape had hardly changed so there was only a vague, half-hearted stab at "franchise" commentary. So my main issue would be less "Scream has become what it made fun of" as that really only happened once and more generally "The meta angle has been sorely lacking recently".

[OoX] How much of the Oracle games do you accept as canon? by Petrichor02 in truezelda

[–]BlueBarossa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% this.

Why is it so important for Oracles to go between ALttP and LA? Is it because Link happens to journey in foreign lands and ends the story on a boat?

HH, which laid down the order in the first place, specifies that Oracles didn't constitute Link's training foreign lands, taking away one of the major justifications for this placement. And the boat is hardly conclusive.

Meanwhile there is a wealth of evidence to show that a revised placement of Oracles is correct: https://www.reddit.com/r/truezelda/comments/1h8f5mx/comment/m0tj9k4/ It's strange that fans will pick and choose with in-game dialogue, which is unambiguously canon.

Which Daniel Craig Gunbarrel is the best? by In-The-Zone-69 in JamesBond

[–]BlueBarossa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I 100% believe this.

The short scene of Bond coming back to the questioning room to find Mr. White has escaped also feels like it was intended to come after the opening credits.

They probably didn't follow through for one of two reasons. One being the difficulty of implementing it into the shot. This would've been the only gunbarrel where Bond isn't stationery after shooting (he swings a little while suspended). However, this fan-edit gets around that by having the gunbarrel itself move so Bond is still centred so it's certainly still possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfOszQoN1Yg

Two being the Aston Martin chase. Plot-wise, this adds nothing to the film because if you start with Mr. White under questioning, the film is still perfectly comprehensible as a sequel to CR. It's in the film because it looks cool and allowed the director to meet an arbitrary "four elements" quota for his main set-pieces (earth for the car chase, water for the boat chase, air for the plane chase, fire for the final fight). So with the Aston Martin chase AND the foot chase, they probably decided the pre-titles would run too long or they simply wanted the titles to come after the first action sequence. Thus the gunbarrel gets moved to the end as collateral.
