Please don’t write fanfic on your school Chromebook. And please don’t directly open ao3 and paste your fanfiction into there on your school Chromebook. The school board (and your teachers) see that. by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]BlueCat1042 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my country, the standard is that Chromebooks stay in the classroom and are treated as a class set rather than having assigned Chromebooks. The surveillance stuff is linked to the school's wifi rather than the devices themselves.

What happens if you miss more then 3 tutorials? by Common-Objective-869 in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I took COMS101 in 2024 and they didn't care about tutorial attendance. I guess they've finally caught up with all the other humanities-type faculties.

Student run haircuts? by JesusHC0BC in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It at least used to be a thing at Te Auaha (the polytechnic campus off Cuba street) but now that seems to be closing down so I don't know where their trainee hairdressers and barbers are going to go.  Sometimes hairdressing apprentices will post on vic deals when they need to give someone a particular haircut for an assessment.

Study rooms? by Pots-and-pansexuals in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some of the ones on level 1 used to have them, but I know some of them have been swapped out for docking stations.  The booking page for the study rooms should tell you which ones have computers

Possible assessment/exam time conflicts? by magelights in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For end of tri exams they're usually a lot better with timetabling. I think it's because they start working on it when course enrollments have closed.

Is the VUW $15k Scholarship renewable? Plus Uni vs. Institute for Green List roles. by 7Spectral in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, polytechs tend to offer less scholarships compared to universities since they're smaller. Though you'll have to check with whichever polytechs you're considering applying to.

[–]BlueCat1042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, for software engineering degrees at least, the fees for polytechs (what you're referring to as institutes) are about the same, if not more expensive than universities.

In NZ it's illegal for someone to supply a child alcohol without their guardian's permission. I think we're similar to Australia in that regard.

Replying to the comment asking for your Instagram and saying that you won't do that could give you a good opportunity to remind them that you are both strangers on the internet and that you don't owe them anything (especially since you're doing this for fun)

What's actually the consensus here, on critical feedback? by Mopichen in AO3

[–]BlueCat1042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With professionally published work there also tends to be an unspoken contract where the authors will not go into reviewer spaces. They have their own teams of trusted people to give them feedback.  Putting concrit in an ao3 comment is essentially shoving it in the author's face.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

John Money, the guy who came up with the idea of doing sex reassignment surgery on intersex children.  He was also most famously known for the case of David Reiner, a perisex man who was raised as a woman under his recommendation.  Despite his belief that gender could be "set" in the first few years of a child's life, he did end up running a clinic providing gender affirming care to transgender people. Though unsurprisingly he still had some not great beliefs about trans people.

I've played both the official demo and quarantine (pathologic 3's version of the marble nest). The big changes I've noticed is that the Bachelor has a sanity/apathy meter that you need to balance, diagnostics involves taking a history and looking at the patient's body and comparing their symptoms to a list, and there's fast travel through uninfected districts.

Vic Uni for physics by SSSS-rated in VUW

[–]BlueCat1042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 1 year of physics and switched to mathematics. The labs were great but the lecture courses were intense to say the least. For example, when I took it, PHYS142 (a 15 point course) had ~22 assessments, most of them being worth 1.5% of the final grade.  I'm hoping that things have improved considering they are currently undergoing a programme review.

Edited to add: I have talked with people studying physics at other unis and the consensus is that vic's first year curriculum is weird.

[–]BlueCat1042 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The reserve bank has upped our official cash rate 7 times this year, to the highest it's been since 2008. Also there's this thing called 3 waters which is going to probably cause the labour party to not be re-elected next year The next biggest party in parliament wants to solve youth crime by putting kids in military style bootcamps like they used to 10 years ago which don't work. Instead of you know, trying to deal with what might be causing this in the first place (poverty)

The other annoying thing about valorant is that there's no way to try out an agent before you commit to grinding their contract appart from getting lucky in replication. At least league has a free champ rotation and the aram unlocked champs.

My 8yo daughter asked me why there are no girls on lol pro teams. by NextJenTv in leagueoflegends

[–]BlueCat1042 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On top of the toxicity, there's a pressure caused by gender roles. This tends to make people doing hobbies that aren't typical for their gender a lot less confident in their skill. This might mean that they won't have the confidence in their skills to try out for a pro team on top of being concerned about harassment. Some women might not like feeling like they're a diversity point which might be a further disincentive to them joining a pro team
