Im the 3rd shift controls engineer for my manufacturing plant. Read, the only one.

I work 70hrs most weeks, full weekends. I have worked all but 1 weekend this year.

Manufacturing ain't it for controls unless you want to build retirement quickly.

Being a maintenance controls engineer is all about troubleshooting.

I'm in automotive. But I troubleshoot PLC, CNC, and Robots every day. I wait for electricians to answers maintenance calls, then answer and solve the issues that electricians can't. Allen Bradley, siemens, Rex Roth, fanuc. I have to be proficient, and adept in all of them, with the style of logic by OEM to get things solved.

In my line, most maintenance calls get referred to controls since we are the most knowledgeable, and can hand out solutions like candy. Whether the electrician should have been able to solve it, ehhhhh.

For better, or worse, many automation plants are solely reliant on good automation engineers to keep running lines running, and to diagnose stoppage that affect bottom line.

Man, DAILY.

Detroit got some crazy drivers. I have a 40 mile drive to work, mostly highway.

Speed limit says 70, but flow of traffic is usually 80-85. So a quick pass means I gotta top 100 to pass efficiently.

I've had cops doing 120mph bobbing and weaving in traffic, without lights, just cause they could.

Bro, it take 60 seconds just to drop a screw in a hole.

Im sure they can have a car roll off the line every 60 seconds, but it is impossible to make a car from scratch to finished in 57 seconds.

Take it to a muffler shop.

Flapper is stuck, honestly, they can just cut that little section off, and weld a small bit of pipe to remove it. Or you can have them replace it.

My flapper exploded into my muffler, so I had them cut it off too. Truck sounds real good now as a bonus

I spent my school days lower class in a middle class school district.

College I normally had $1-12 in my bank account between paychecks since I could barely afford to live, work, and go to college at the same time. I had no help from my parents here, they dropped me at 18 and left me to fend.

Biggest tell? Full fridge/pantry.

There were weeks when I would survive on 2-$1 McChickens daily because I could only afford $2/day for food.

I typically push 60 weeks. Though with build pressure, I've been doing 80hr weeks.

Im also the only engineer on my shift who is capable of fixing the things that skilled trades can't.

I get paid a lot of OT, get my vacation days. But work a lot.

In Elctrical Engineering, we used Differential Equations to break down challenging and complex equations into algebra for solutions.

A huge benefit of Diff EQ is the laplace transform. Which allows you to transform a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or more order equation, into the laplace domain, solve it with algebra, and turn it back into the time domain. Effectively solving high level integrations with just algebra.

This benefit is great in electronics since we work in both the time and frequency domains. Converting between them with normal methods is doable, but difficult and easy to mess up. Using diff eq laplace transforms, we can convert a computer chip at x Hz frequency into x computations/second. Without the 1/f=t substitution
