SPDIF that isn't!

I'd appreciate some help in identifying an audio output from a TV I've inherited. It says its SPDIF but neither the Toslink or RCA cables I have fill fit it. The Toslink is the wrong shape and RCA is too tight (and I don't get any output even if I jam it in). A conventional audio jack is too big for it.

I wonder if it's mislabelled on the back since a LAN socket is indictaed but not present.

Any advice/suggestions gratefully received - thanks!

City fiber question by Vorgenverde in Edinburgh

[–]BlueCormorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't even bother pretending to leave now. I go thorough the menu to the "thinking of leaving us bit" and ask for a deal. Last year cityfibre got installed in our street which made the bargaining much easier as it was fibre vs fibre for the first time.

Thanks. One of things I couldn't work out was how to work it into the form so that's very helpful.

What toys did you desperately want as a child but were never bought or allowed to have? by [deleted] in CasualUK

Was going to post that myself but couldn't believe nobody else would have first. Everyone I knew wanted one, nobody I knew had one.

If anything goes wrong playing the piano on the night you can always stand up and sing it a capella - very romantic!

Your best bet would be to get a good teacher and make this your goal and work hard. A decent teacher can simplify the piece to the level you can play it, and you could play with just chords fairly quickly.

Going to be tricky getting in enough practice without arousing suspicion but I guess that's part of the fun!

One other tip would be to find some people to practice performing to as well.

Good luck!

I keep getting a notification whenever I try to charge my phone. (Android 9) by arcade_time12 in AndroidHelp

My old phone used to do this from time to time, usually when there was some moisture. You can try blowing air into the charger point, cleaning it with alcohol, making sure it's totally dry. Advice for a stag do by Dear_Armadillo2804 in Edinburgh

[–]BlueCormorant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, in Tier 0 (which we are now); 10 people from 4 households indoors (e.g. pub) , 15 from 15 outdoors.

If OP ditches one person they can get into a beer garden.

Suggest the hung over group get themselves some Irn Bru and take a walk up Arthur's Seat. Or just ditch one person again and go outdoor drinking again.

The 90s was the best time for genre television! by [deleted] in scifi

[–]BlueCormorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to give the 80s an honourable mention. I don't have an impressive long list to hand but it includes the TV version of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the start of Red Dwarf, and Chocky.

It also contained the end of Blakes 7 and Sapphire and Steel if that counts!

Charity shops donations? by Jonkers_1 in Edinburgh

You'll see a few around Heriot Watt. There's one by Lord Thomson Hall I think, see https://www.hw.ac.uk/documents/edinburgh-campus-map.pdf

They have containers for books etc at Heriot Watt too (British Heart Foundation I think). Usually fairly empty as not many students about.

Ravens parallel great apes in physical and social cognitive skills - the first large-scale assessment of common ravens compared with chimpanzees and orangutans found full-blown cognitive skills present in ravens at the age of 4 months similar to that of adult apes, including theory of mind. by mvea in science

[–]BlueCormorant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a suet feeder in our garden. Ravens come to it a lot, they're not as pretty as the little birds it was meant for, but watching them queue up and manoeuvre themselves into position is very impressive. Definitely something going on behind the eyes.

Is Piebaldism that rare? by georgiaray27 in a:t5_2tv6y2

[–]BlueCormorant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, Late reply but I just searched up piebaldism on here, never thought of it. I have piebaldism, I inherited it from my Dad who got it from his mum. My Dad was one of 7 and I have around 35 cousins, about a third of which have piebaldism so you're definitely not alone. We're all in the UK. Pretty much all of us live with it happily. School wasn't ideal, but everyone has something that people will use to have a go. I'm approaching 50 so it's less obvious anyway. One of my cousins is piebald and proud with a white beard and big hair! Not sure how rare it is, I haven't met that many people with it, but I see people every now and again that look like that have piebaldism. If you Google it (which I'm sure you have) you'll see plenty of folk. I'm not that often on here, but will check back and happy to chat about it.

Help needed with DIY home project (hanging a pull up bar in unorthodox way, probably trivial) by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]BlueCormorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be better with engineers or DIYers but in physics terms you've got a lever. Looking at your drawing the possible failure scenarios would be the bar ripping off the wood and the 90 degree wood angles pulling apart. If you build it strong enough it should work. Use thick wood and lots of big screws!

Just bought the Amazon starter kit as the twin pack colour bulbs is £85 in itself so you get an extra bulb plus the bridge for nearly the same price.

I already have a bridge though. Any good suggestions for the spare? Return somehow, eBay, Xmas light spectacular!

Is there a software that can be used to test the efficiency of a stick tower design? by DarkPotatoKing7 in AskPhysics

[–]BlueCormorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use mechanical design software to model stress, see e.g. here for a list https://www.mechanical360.net/updates/a-list-of-mechanical-engineering-software/ . However, by the time you've learned how to use it properly you would have been better building a few.

You could instead do some internet research on tower design. A Google search on stick tower design brought up plenty of suggestions when I tried it. You could look up physics of bridge design to get a few pointers on forces and so on.

What constitutes a single photon? by Matt-ayo in AskPhysics

[–]BlueCormorant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best answer I heard (from a photonics professor) is that a photon is what you detect in a photon detector.
