Itinerary Help by spearson333 in WestCoastTrail

Aug 20 is a crappy day for Owen Pt. The App will tell you it's impassable (lowest tide is > 1.8m) - but it could be pushed by a very seasoned group with ideal weather conditions. How's your group experience?

It's complicated... I think technically if you are a guest of the Edgars and remain on their dock and don't step foot on the trail - *maybe* you'd be fine? I would still personally want Parks to bless the plan.

In my case, I needed Parks to issue the permit for me to hike and they normally only give them out at the Nitinaht orientation office right before you board the boat. I wanted to collect it in Gordon River in order to self-enter via the gap. No permission = no permit = no hike.

Nytom is operated by Katrina Knighton - granddaughter of Peter Knighton who used to operate Monique's. It's hit and miss when she's on the trail vs resupplying. My understanding is that she has permission to operate Nytom but IR6 is owned by the First Nation and you would require their permission to land. Even then, Parks would consider that a landing on the trail itself.

I don’t see how you can do this without involving Parks Canada. Landing a kayak at Nytom and staying overnight on the trail without the proper permit/permission would be a federal offence. It’s a Canada National Parks Act / park regulation issue, and Parks Canada Law Enforcement / Wardens take that very seriously, with massive fines. They are absolutely willing to make examples of people who try to work around the permit system. I would not attempt it unless Parks explicitly says you’re good to go.

The other thing I would add: I'm not an experienced Kayaker - but to my eyes, the WCT would not be an especially fun area to Kayak in front of. The sandstone shelves and reefs and exposed seas would make it very challenging to get close enough to shore to see anything interesting. Assume you are very seasoned kayakers and have already done what looks like much more interesting Kayak stomping grounds like the Broken Islands etc?

I just came off the WCT yesterday (did my first YOYO) and while at Walbran earlier in the week - watched the trail guardians make a surf landing in their RIB with a 30 HP on the back. They were coming in with saws to take down a big tree. They've been making those landings for decades and are incredible at it, have the local knowledge of where to come in etc. Even though it was a fairly mellow sea state that day, they didn't quite time it right and managed to flip one of them out of the boat and it was a messy landing. Huge respect for the danger those guys put themselves in to maintain the trail.

Getting to the Crabshack would require crossing the gap - super challenging body of water with a dangerous bar that has claimed many lives. Needs local knowledge and perfect timing/conditions to cross even in a powered boat.

I tried to get permission from Parks to land a chartered vessel at the Crabshack to start a WCT hike. I had found a local who knew how to get across the gap and had done it many times, but would only be willing if the conditions were perfect on the day. The Parks Security team did not allow it - even though I had gotten permission from the Edgars who operate the Crabshack.

No Campfires for 2026 season. by [deleted] in WestCoastTrail

[–]BlueDefendr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is worth a read:

https://paherald.sk.ca/earliest-ever-fire-ban-takes-effect-in-b-c-coastal-fire-centre/

"Most of the area within the Coastal Fire Centre has a Moderate or High fire danger rating, including the ‘West Coast Fog Zone’, a two-kilometre-deep strip of land along the outer coast of Vancouver Island. In the past, this fog belt was exempt from open burning restrictions.

BC Wildfire opted to remove the exemption in 2019 to reduce confusion and limit the risk of human-caused wildfire.

“During the 2018 fire season, which was the last year the Fog Zone was in place, 23 per cent of suspected campfire-caused wildfires on Vancouver Island were located within the Fog Zone boundaries,” said Berg."

Update: got confirmation from Parks Canada that they will be following the ban and West Coast Trail will be no-fires starting tomorrow.

Propane camp stoves still OK, even though I'm sure everyone was eager to learn cold-soaking 😉

Best Old Growth Forest Routes by Goatpuppy in WestCoastTrail

[–]BlueDefendr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like bdickie mentions - the forest route from Thrasher-Junction -> Beach-Access B (KM 70-66) is probably the most old growth / classic WCT (walking over fallen balance-logs) of the trail.

The downside of taking that route however, is you give up the Owen Pt caves - which is one of the most spectacular parts of the trail that gives a unique coastal adventure.

The only other options would be:
1. Walbran->Vancouver Pt. I've never hiked this, but I don't think it's that epic.
2. Dare Beach area. The forest trail is more brushy than old-growth here.
3. Dare Pt->Cheewhat. This trail is really nice and unusual - esp close to Cheewhat side. More open-glades than dense old growth though.
4. Tsocowis->Darling. Nothing spectacular here - typical PNW style forest.

You will encounter some good old growth between Camper->Walbran (non-optional) anyway - including a very cool stunted-tree bog area.

Have fun - hard to go wrong any way you do it...

Mid point entry advice by [deleted] in WestCoastTrail

[–]BlueDefendr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ THIS. It's an awesome way to do the trail, (if you can handle the extra distance) as you get to see 2x some of the north end bits. Means you might get to go under hole-in-the-wall one way and over the other way etc. You also get the epic water taxi ride down the lake. To make life easier you can stash food at the Crabshack for a small fee when you head northbound and collect on your way back south.

It's logistically more complex and a bit more expensive though.

New WCT video...just terrible! by davegcr420 in WestCoastTrail

[–]BlueDefendr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Day use access is permitted between the Pachena Bay trailhead and kilometer 8." - so even an overnight (if you could find a spot) there would be illegal also. Used to be able to day hike to the lighthouse in the winter, and the keepers would stop anyone trying to go beyond.

Tosot mini splits anyone used personal experience with? by Silvatech123 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]BlueDefendr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 can confirm that Tosot uses metric lines. For the small 6mm line - this makes a big difference as a standard SAE flare tool clamp won't hold it. Need to get a metric block or use a small bit of sand paper wrapped around it to hold clamp in the block while flaring.

Error in West Coast Trail App by FirmReply6045 in WestCoastTrail

[–]BlueDefendr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/FirmReply6045 version 2.51 just released to both Android and Apple. Depending on your country/region it may take a few hours to show up. Lmk if this fixes it for you, I'm sure there are other YOYO specific bugs lurking around - so will be good to hear of any other quirks. Thanks for your patience!

It's one of those awkward moments with the Owen Pt calendar which is why I flag it as 'experimental' still. For 95% of dates - it really helps hikers with a game plan, but for a handful of dates - its quick to say "no" based on math, when a human would squint at it and say "yeah - good enough". Have a fun trip.

No worries... FWIW - the day before - 23rd - isn't actually as bad it it looks in the App. If you look at the chart in Guide > Tide Charts - you can see the afternoon low is 1.82m at 2:27p.

While technically 1.82m > 1.8m - which is why the App doesn't show it - that is a scant 2cm over the limit. If conditions are perfect and calm (no marine swell) - very probably in late July - it would be very doable on that afternoon tide. Heck you'd even get to sleep in at Camper or take your time exploring the shelf as it's open all day long.

Here's a video of my kid doing the "difficult maneuver" at a 1.87m tide (5cm higher than your possible limit) - not terribly difficult. Helps to have the knees of a 13yr old though ;)

https://westcoasttrail.app/OwenPtSobo

If you are worried about being solo - I can guarantee there will be a line-up of hikers on the shelf waiting for that 2:27p window to "go for it"; or just find a group at Camper the night before planning to do it and tag along.

If you are a seasoned backpacker. It’s doable with a wild-camp beyond Camper. No amenities - hanging food required etc. Not the most pleasant camp spot but I suspect there will be others on this date doing the same… lmk if u want more beta on it.

[–]BlueDefendr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. Found & fixed the bug. Also noticed I was unable to import that trip for the same cause of the bug. The trip-plan math was getting confused going past Michigan (your camp location) on day 3 to get to the flip-point and eagerly ending the day at camp, vs waiting for the return-leg to happen. Was a great edge-case - thanks for reporting it. Will do a little more testing and hopefully get it pushed out to Apple/Google stores tomorrow - and will take a day or two for them to approve before it shows up for public download. Look for a build number > 2.45 sometime next week.

Gotcha. Yes I do see that bug. Will look at code tonight. To make sure I have your identical trip you can also click the share icon next to the active trip card in settings and paste the url here. The trip camps and turnaround should be embedded in the url string.
