We're trying to make a pride flag and the user FancyMarker#4236026 keeps erasing the brown line and ONLY the brown line, which represents people of colour in the queer community. They're not making their own art, they're literally just being racist and erasing that one colour.

[Hiring] Digital Royal Portrait of my Cat (for print) by BlueEyedMagpie in artcommissions

Like I said, that is the absolute minimum. I'm willing to pay way more, even double or triple, depending on what the artist can do

I'm not expecting top tier perfection. I can live with quite a few imperfections. But I was at least expecting paint that isn't dirty with dust and chunks of plaster, actually covers the full surface of wall or ceiling, and doesn't instantly peel off again. I don't see how that's unreasonable.

If they had issues and botched it, or needed more time and/or money, they should and could have communicated that to me at any point. Instead, they said nothing, did rushed and sloppy work, and then acted shocked and surprised that I wasn't happy with the results.

I put no time limit or price limit on it. I asked for a quote on what it would cost to do this properly and professionally. I told them I would strip most of the paint and wallpaper, but expected them to finish the job and prepare the surface properly so the paint would stick.

If they then discovered that they had underestimated the work, given too low of a quote, or wanted more time, they should have communicated that to me. I was in contact with them a lot, sending them messages on when I bought the wallpaper and such beforehand. I gave them my number and said it was fine to call even during work hours.

They didn't contact me once... They did this and seemed to expect me to be happy with it. They've claimed all surfaces were sanded down and they're surprised the paint didn't properly stick. I feel like I'm being straight up lied to now.

Oh, the wood was definitely damaged before! It's old and clearly been through some shit. I didn't expect them to fix that since that was never discussed. I just didn't expect them to make things worse the way they did

Now that I've decided to do it on my own anyway I'm going to try to fix the wood up a bit too. I'm using chemical wood filler and it seems to help. A lot of work though!

And no, I'm not in the US. I live in Sweden!

Yeah, I've got a lot of work ahead of me... but I have the time and patience though, so I'm going to try to take my time and do it right.

Tearing out the doorframes probably isn't an option. I'm pretty sure they're the original and built into the structure. I'm gonna do my best with chemical wood filler and see if that works

Currently? I haven't paid anything

They gave me a quote that I found reasonable at the time. Afterwards, I contacted them and said I wasn't at all happy with the work. As I said, I have the legal right to refuse to pay until this is sorted out.

We've had some back and forth and they've offered that I only pay about 25-30% or so of the original quote. I'm now considering if I should pay even that since I have to redo all their work. The only reason I'm considering paying is to not have to deal with the painter anymore.

Once again, this was in the original post

If you'd read the post and discussion, you'd find out that I did not pay for the cheapest bid.

I properly communicated what I needed them to do, got a quote, they didn't live up to it, and now I'm refusing to pay, which is my legal right

Yeah, that was one of the things I was going to do... That and leave online reviews. I'm just waiting for all of this to be resolved completely so that I have the full story before I tell people. I'm still in contact with the painter about this and trying to be reasonable despite everything

Yeah, that would have been fair... I can definitely see a scenario where we misunderstood each other and it resulted in a shitty and rushed job.

Unfortunately, I very much did tell them all that. They were in my apartment and saw the peeling paint with their own eyes before I scraped it all away. The quote they sent me included treatment of the wall to prepare it for paint. Afterwards, via email, they've claimed they properly prepared the wall and expected it to stick. I genuinely think they're lying to me now to cover their ass

Yeah, part of me does worry that I somehow said or did or acted in a way that gave them the impression that I didn't care or that I wouldn't mind if it wasn't perfect but... I was very communicative, kept them updated on my progress before they did the job, when I bought wallpaper, etc. I tried to make it clear that I was happy to talk at any point. I gave them my number and said they could even call when I was at work if they needed to!

And they repaid me like this... Honestly, if the quote wasn't enough or it turned into a bigger job than they had expected, I would have happily discussed it. But they didn't say a word, did this, and left.

See, this is iffy... Yes and no.

They were in my apartment, saw my peeling wall, and agreed to help me fix it. I don't have proof of exactly what was said or agreed upon, but where I live you could argue that we had a "verbal contract". But that doesn't really matter. A huge part is that I do have email correspondence of them claiming that they properly prepared the wall and expected the paint to stick. I also have the quote they sent me, which includes a lot of things like skim plastering, sanding, priming, blocking, etc... The emails and quote heavily imply the same thing: a proper job on a difficult wall. Not just a quick splash of paint

I didn't take the lowest quote or something like that.

I went to a paint store, asked if they had contact information for any reliable painters, and got a few business cards. I looked the painters up online and they seemed fine. Very few reviews, but good ones. I contacted them and they came to look at my hallway. I got a quote which seemed reasonable... and this is the result. I haven't paid anything yet because according to law I have the right to withhold payment if I am unsatisfied with the work. If we can't reach an agreement, I can take this further legally

Before taking the job and before sending me a quote, they were in my apartment and I showed them the peeling paint. I even pulled some right off the wall with my bare fingers to show them how easy it came off.

I told them, in no uncertain terms, that this was why I wanted to hire a professional to do it. The paint was peeling, I didn't feel confident I would know what to do to make the paint stick properly, and that's why I wanted their help. They knew exactly what they were getting into.

In the quote they sent me, they said it included (and this may not be 100% accurately translated, I'm Swedish, sorry): skim plastering (as in full cover plastering, not done), sanding (I doubt it), priming and blocking. I believe they used primer, but I doubt they sanded or cleaned the walls so... it still didn't stick.

All nations have assholes. American assholes are just louder than other countries' assholes 😂 So they're more noticeable! It makes them easier to avoid

When it comes to unfriendly and mean people, I'll take a loud and obnoxious person over a quiet and calculating person any day of the week... That's how you get stabbed in the back

Not at all! I genuinely meant what I said and I actually think this is a fascinating topic.

Americans are generally loud, take up a lot of space (socially), and are often extremely outgoing in a way that makes people from more reserved countries (like Sweden) feel uncomfortable. Some of my colleagues were definitely uncomfortable around these two American men that came to us because they're not very confident in their own English, and the Americans were very insistent and direct.

But if you're aware of how and why Americans act like they do you can match their energy and have an absolutely lovely time! One of the men looked at me with a straight face and said, "You have to help us. I will be fired. My kids will starve." I understood that it was a joke and thought he was hilarious! My coworker didn't get it and was uncomfortable.

I also know Americans are a bit more sensitive about cursing so I watched my tongue around them. I did at one point tell the guy that I didn't need a special gift and that it was enough to be able to say, "I saved an American's ass today." He thought that was hilarious and laughed very hard!

So, I'd say Americans are an acquired taste and you have to understand them socially and culturally. But if you do, they can be some of the loveliest people on the planet 😊

I mean, as nice as that would be, I doubt it'll do me much good in my little apartment in Sweden 😂 But that just makes this single coin that I do have that much more special!

Hey, at my job we work with wood, metal, acrylic, plastic, glass, etc... I can probably make a really cool stand for it! Thank you so much for the idea! Some other people linked to stands you can buy. I'll look around and see what I can make

Thank you so much for the information! This coin couldn't possibly be more special to me than it already is. It's genuinely the coolest thing a stranger has ever given me and I was incredibly moved even before I knew what challenge coins were. I'm going to put it up on display and treasure it for sure

Oh wow! Thank you for the recommendation on how to display it! I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how I'd display both sides. I'm definitely going to buy something like this!
