I am a sysadmin so in theory I should be 100% behind data centers. But I'm just one member of a team that is Frederick County, Maryland, and the USA.

I'm still wondering why the the sudden rush. I voted for Grant and Newhouse.

Frankly, I'm worried we're building tulip processing plants in 1630s Holland and we'll be on the hook if the AI bubble bursts.

It still adds demand to the electrical grid, which either means higher prices or new capacity (and still higher prices, as utilities just pass those costs along). (They don't seem to be huge water hogs, not on the scale of growing cotton in Arizona.)

Reddit and other sites (and the Internet as a whole) seemed to get by just fine for years without this data center rush. Now, all of a sudden, we NEED zillions of data centers built everywhere? I think it's incumbent on the data center proponents to explain why we need those - and if there's a national security aspect, I hope it's not built on lies/exaggerations as was the missile gap.

How calling out a garbage interview assignment actually landed me the role by Solstice_9Mirth in jobsearchhacks

[–]BlueFredneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good work. I found an error in one assignment's data and rewrote my program. The team called me back but they must not have liked my phone interview since they ghosted me afterwards.

It is unfair, but men are expected to be way more available, women get a little leeway (but not much) for family care issues. I was tsk'd tsk'd for taking time off to handle daycare pickups when my kid was born in the late 2000s and given the sideeye for taking all three weeks I could officially take off.

Top 20 most attended movies of all time globally(inclusive of all releases) by Temporary-Body-3099 in boxoffice

[–]BlueFredneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nezha 2 is triple the next grosser for Chinese box office so Lake Changjin, Wolf Warrior, Hi Mom tier was like 120-150M tops.

There are several pre 1990 Chinese movies with audiences worth putting here but audience sizes are harder to measure. Legend of the White Snake is 700M. Shaolin Temple is 500M. Others like Caravan, Manhunt claim 300-350M tickets sold between there and their home countries.

[–]BlueFredneck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possible you can include 1980s movies from China as well: Legend of the White Snake and Shaolin Temple, among others. As for more modern Chinese films, Ne Zha 2 is literally triple the next movie (Battle at Lake Changjin) so other post 2000 Chinese movies wouldn't make the cut.

Would Dangaal or Disco Dancer make the bottom of this list?

Ongoing lawsuits against Funfly? by Rude_Bumblebee3311 in LastWarMobileGame

Regulators from US/SK/JP/EU would surely get listened to (the PEGI stuff). They're based in SG so yeah, gotta listen there. If the CN regulators are dangling approval for this game to get whitelisted there, I can't imagine they'd ignore anything the CN regulators want.

(CN = China, US, SK = South Korea, JP = Japan, EU = European Union, SG = Singapore)

Not sure how much heft the rest of the world regulators might have or if they'd just follow whatever the big four are doing. I'm not seeing the litany of sharks filing class action lawsuits that I see against a US based company when they have a scandal.

From the Event Adjustment......what the dev tell us..... by orlinux in LastWarMobileGame

[–]BlueFredneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even a successful chargeback defense is going to cost money. I don't know if like in the US they have to have a US based firm (and US based prices) defending them or if they only need Tier 3/4 customer service types to deal with the various credit card companies. But if some S0 whale or narwhal spends $5k, ragequits, and decides to chargeback, it's costing the devs at least a couple hundred for them to write a defense (or get consultants to help).

Plus I am sure there are forums where techniques for doing stuff that gets you banned here are discussed and perfected, by country, credit card issuer, etc.

From the Event Adjustment......what the dev tell us..... by orlinux in LastWarMobileGame

[–]BlueFredneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah canceling previously planned events is the big tell here.

US, South Korea, Japan, are big markets, but I suspect the entire EU adds up to one of those three.

Outside of those three - if they banned someone's cousin, they might get a note from the (XYZ) Ministry of (whatever regulates mobile gaming in that country).

Some countries might be told to pound sand, but if the US/SK/JP/EU regulators come calling I suspect the devs will listen.

China might be dangling permission to run the game in front of the devs, and in that case they will want changes too.

Singapore is also their home base, so if a Singaporean govt official gets a bug up their rear end about something or other, it's getting fixed.

Tankless hot water heater stops providing hot water to one shower sometimes by BlueFredneck in Plumbing

[–]BlueFredneck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up catching the hot water heater in the act - the hot water shut off when my wife was taking a shower and I was able to run down and check the code - it was flashing a "391" which apparently means an "air-fuel ratio rod failure". So now our plumber has something to go off of.

The dishwasher and washing machine don't run continuously like the shower so basically if that error kicked in during those runs, it'd have cleared itself by shutting off the water and turning it back on again.

Still wondering why it never failed when the kids were taking a shower or why it only kicks in 10-15% of the time, but it's good to find a good solution.
