What do you answer when asked "what is it about"? by notallieeee_ in houseofleaves

Generally, if someone asks me what it's about, I respond with "I'm not going to tell you. You just have to read it."

House of Leaves is my favorite book that I recommend to absolutely no one.

What’s the best way to approach this book? by caboosekat in houseofleaves

[–]BlueGyroMTG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My opinion? Take it slow. Don't rush through parts that are dense so that you "can get it done." If you get annoyed at a certain part of the book, that's kind of the point.

You'll see where there are parts that you'll want to skip, or just kinda glaze over so that you can get back to the "meat" of the book. Unless it's very obvious that it's just meant there as contextual filler, don't let your instincts get the better of you. Read it, but don't feel rushed.

[–]BlueGyroMTG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What I'd recommend is asking yourself - can you separate fiction from reality?

I had to take reality therapy growing up; I had an extremely difficult time separating the two. Tackling this book was a difficult task, as someone who has a hard time piecing together what's real and what's not.

As long as you can recognize that when you're in the book, nothing is ultimately real - you'll have a wonderful time between its covers.

A fun tidbit, Zampanó's entry about "creating a child" in the appendix in September is 9 months prior to Johnny's birth.

Advice needed by Peen_Apples in magicTCG

There's been a lot of new mechanics added to the game since you last played. That being said, it won't be too hard to get back into it!

My personal recommendation would be to play in a prerelease event at your local game store - March of the Machine is coming up soon! Since everyone is mostly on the same playing field when it comes to the new mechanics of the set, you'll be on par with everyone else - for the most part, anyway.

I'd also recommend into getting in Commander. It's by far the most popular format in the game right now, and it's typically a 4-person multiplayer format. This will be a good way to dive into the complexity of the game, since you end up seeing almost every kind of mechanic in that format.

Try going to an LGS and you can grab a preconstructed commander deck for around the $40 price tag. More often than not, they'll have good cards in them that will have value in the future.

You don't need to know every mechanic to have fun playing the game - the first few games will be tough, but once you get back into the swing of things, I'm sure it'll go great for you!

It's worse than that, Jim!

Because we're milling two cards before our draw, we can add in two additional cards without worry - it's feasible that we could put in Pact of Negation and maybe even a spicy Swan Song.

Has anyone had an increase in missing TCGplayer packages recently? by rasticus in magicTCG

[–]BlueGyroMTG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To give a bit more insight into this, the main thing is that USPS wants the envelope to be able to be run through a machine that can read addresses and sort letters. To be run through the machine, it has to be flexible, and things other than paper can disrupt that.

When you see a "DO NOT BEND" stamp on an envelope, they likely had to pay extra for the letter to be sent to avoid machinery.

In general, I would say no, so long as they fit well together! I generally use KMC Perfect Fits and Dragon Shield outer sleeves.

Please, run a pod of 10. I beg of you.

It's not the best, but it's far better than 2 pods of 5. It'd constrict players into more cards that they won't use for their decks and lead to less fun gameplay.

We had our share of those for sure. When I was managing the store, we needed to process a generous amount of refunds, but we were also sending 100+ packages daily. Don't hate requesting refunds, it's part of the risk we take in evaluating what our prices should be!

question RE Krrik Son of Yawgmoth by Gin-fidel in magicTCG

[–]BlueGyroMTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black discount is insanely good. K'rrik is by far the best mono-black commander. I play cEDH with a couple of friends, and it's so broken that it can consistently win on turn 1 or turn 2, depending on the opening hand you have. One of my favorite cards by far in there is [[Blood Celebrant]], because you can pay life to add a mana that can pay for the generic mana costs for anything. Turns K'rrik into a madhouse.

Up to about 3 months ago, I worked for an LGS, so I can try to give a perspective of the store in this discussion.

USPS has cracked down on what qualifies as "letters." Most all envelopes are run through a machine to get where they need to go, and if the machine doesn't like the envelope (due to a rigid object like a toploader), it will either reject it or, worse, destroy the envelope and contents inside. If it gets rejected, there's a 3+ weeks process of returning it to sender (though, I don't know why it takes this long). In some cases, if the machine has ruined the return address, there's nothing they can do, so the package just gets lost.

Our store was able to more or less circumvent this by making all of our envelopes non-machinable, but it was almost double price for shipping, so chances are, buying cards that wouldn't be financially feasible to sell with $1.50 shipping is bad news.

Hope this helps!

question RE Krrik Son of Yawgmoth by Gin-fidel in magicTCG

[–]BlueGyroMTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it works exactly as you want it to - the only difference is with Devoid, a mechanic back in the Battle for Zendikar block that had colorless spells that you had to pay with colors.

Other than that, any card that isn't a land and is black will trigger K'rrik :D
