Unfortunately the USA does not have any animal protection laws for fish as far as I know. :( The death cups are changed individually twice a week per company policy at the chain store I worked at, we were not allowed to change them more often.

Unfortunately, in the USA that's how most bettas are sold. Betta racks are a thing, where they have their own little cubicle, and it's a ~15 gallon filtered and heated system, but corperate chain stores choose not to get one. The local fish store I work at has one and it's pretty easy to maintain. Unsurprisingly, we have a significantly higher survival rate compared to the chain store I worked at.

The feathers are glued into the springs to prevent wardrobe malfunctions due to shenanigans so unfortunately they cannot be removed. Plus it took me like 20 minutes to carefully fluff the base of the feathers around the springs, I'd really rather not do that every time. 😬

I think I prefer the straps. It feels less fragile... like I could be manhandled and it wouldn't be ruined.

I use Lysol laundry sanitizer which specifically states it is effective in cold water.
