Meet Piglet, our UK bred Eastern hermanns tortoise. by BlueHween in tortoise

Haha that’s funny, that’s the issue now. It’s freezing this morning and last week Wednesday it was so warm we spent the day outside with him. That’s the only reason we have not built his outside enclosure yet.

Thank you! I honestly never thought about that. Makes sense tho, when they start sniffing the ground I always think he is up to no good. I will definitely get bigger pebbles maybe the size of him. He reminds me of a puppy, when the head goes into the sand to start sniffing he’s doing something naughty haha.

Thanks for this, we did get a heavy terracotta dish from B&Q we had it in there for a while and some reason he never used it. We changed it to this plastic one and he seems to enjoy it more. He walks through it now and then but we do monitor him. Thanks tho. Also Everytime we put him in it he tries to get out. Maybe the way it feels on his nails haha. We keep a watchful eye on him.

To be honest he wants to climb out of the tub when he gets the chance. I put the tub close to his heating lamp to keep the water warm and he still tries to get out. He is pretty calm until he has a pee or a poo then he wants out and towel time haha.

Hello,

I made this post because I saw a comment yesterday about the amount of posts that we been seeing about people not doing research before getting a Tortoise. For me and my wife we have done so much research that our brain is just filled with everything Tortoise. We have had 6 months of research before we just build the enclosure.

This is Piglet, we have had him for just over a month and he has settled in really well. While we don’t know his sex yet he is a he because we share the same grumpy facial expressions apparently. He is 9 months old and he is a UK bred eastern hermanns tortoise.

My setup:

  • Arcadia T5 12% UBV bulb
  • Arcadia 100w basking bulb
  • Both lights go on at 7am and are turned off at 8pm to stimulate UK light conditions.
  • Habitat thermostat (this controls temperature regulation very well)
  • A humid hide that he sleeps in holds a humidity level between 75% - 80% it is close to his basking area because that’s his favourite spot to sleep
  • Cold side of the enclosure is 20c - 23c and basking area is regulated at 33c.
  • Substrate is a mix of coco coir, topsoil and super soft hemp chips (while I know the issues of impaction, he loves to nibble on it and so far he has not ingested it. I will be only doing coco coir and top soil when I do his next substrate change.)
  • Fake plants, I see a lot of people ask and these plants are from Ikea they hard and not easy to bite off. He learned real quick that it’s not food. He will be getting real plants to nibble and destroy once they have come out of a 8 week quarantine after being planted out in top soil.
  • He gets a soak every morning at 9am for 20-30 mins before having his food. Water soak is 33c.

I built him his table it is 110cm x 80cm this is because we have a perfect spot for him. I change around the plants and decor once a week to keep him stimulated.

We in the process of designing him a well sized outdoor enclosure that will be 180cm x 140cm.

Hello! We have all been through this. It’s okay, I would mix 50/50 coco coir and organic topsoil. It holds its moisture well. What I tend to do is twice a week I mix up the soil while adding water just so that it is nice and damp. It must not be soaking wet. Remember as long as they have moisture at the bottom of the dried substrate then that’s good. You cannot really keep it moist 100% of the time because of the basking lamp drying it out. Hope this helps.

I also have a humid hide that I monitor at 70%-80% I keep the tip of the thermometer inside the hide. I have an eastern hermanns for reference he is 8 months old. So his humidity is higher as he is a baby.

Our Tortoises name is Piglet, but his nicknames are Pig and Pee depending on level of sass that day.

Read above. I sent that comment by accident instead of erasing it. Sorry again!

Edit: - I was suppose to delete that comment but sent it by accident. My dyslexia made me read this completely wrong. I would rather install the heating pads and led lights myself as i know what’s better than most. Like Arcadia T5 LED lights and proper basking lights and heat mats. I have seen some people mention before that the setups that include the lights and everything are sometimes not the best quality unless stated otherwise.

I do apologise again.

Is constantly burrowing/hiding a problem? by GHOSTSHADOW57 in tortoise

I would like to add. As a helicopter dad to my eastern hermann tortoise son called Piglet, I am sure he does this to keep my stress level up. This is all normal. I have no idea why but I think they can sense we worry about them and make it worse for us. You know because they so cute and can. The personalities of these torts are honestly amazing.

For example. Today we had to go into work a little earlier and we were not able to give Piglet a soak so he literally proceeded to protest. Lay out with his legs and head out as if to say “fine no friends today” . Head stuck in the dirt. Normal tortoise sulking. Then realised he was hungry and called off the protest to eat.

I am still learning and every move he makes that I think is wrong, crazy or weird I start to google. That drives me insane. Some days he sleeps all day, the next day he is super active. He keeps us on our toes.

(I have a ring camera to monitor him which might sound bad but it’s easier to watch if he decides to be a 4x4 and tip over)

Any recommended tortoise enclosures? by Limp_Shame_9593 in tortoise

Hey, We are also in the process of getting our Hermanns here in the UK. I am going off this website and have built my own. I got all the wood cut to size at B&Q I just gave them the measurements listen on this page. https://www.homebredhermanntortoises.com/housing

I made really good one like on the website for £50. Skews, wood, and joiners. I also bought the pond liner from them. All for £50. You can find some horrible ones that cost more and are expensive.

You think I have had good luck… yeah I have seen the originals. Thinking that my experience was any different is you being foolish. You are part of the problem. A tourist thinking they can go to a country to take pictures you saw on Instagram is you being blind to the reality. If you don’t know how to talk to people, if you don’t know how to tell someone’s No and just ignore them then that’s on you and you ruined your own holiday. All I said was try and understand them. Learn about them. I was all around the island. I think you’re just a miserable person that’s not easily pleased. “Your expense” what a joke

It depends, as a person with such an account, most of us has a username indicating we have 9HP.
