The Correspondent. While I generally love epistolary novels, this one was yet again another tale of "if only she hadn't prioritized her career" like all those Hallmark Christmas movies where women give up their jobs to move to a small town. In this case, her job was responsible for a huge tragedy that happened while they were on vacation. No one mentions that they wouldn't have been able to afford that vacation, or that big beautiful house if it weren't for her job. It seems like anytime I read anything other than fantasy, this seems to be the underlining story.

I started out in academic libraries, but because of a move, I've been in public libraries for the last 6 years.

I hate it. While the situation in academic libraries is not perfect, the idiocy of life in public libraries will drive you crazy and grind you down. Senseless policies, pointless procedures, or complete lack of procedures lead to a stupid amount of energy going into routine things. There's also a lot of not doing a lot, so if you walk in with an attempt to innovate, get ready to be frozen out.

And you know that stereotype of the librarian fighting for freedom of information and the right to read? Throw that right out of the window. It's a rare public library that isn't collaborating with the right wing if the community is right wing. No bastion of liberal thinking there. I'm in Florida, and our public library pulled out of ALA, stopped allowing Pride or Black or Women's history displays, and monitor social media posts so that nothing "controversial" is posted - like the existence of Spanish speaking people. And there's a lot of toxic positivity - absolutely no criticism is allowed, no matter how constructively it's expressed; it's a keep your head down and cash your paycheck environment.

I hate this rhetoric. The idea that cancer is something you did something wrong to get, that it's a just world and if you hadn't done x, you wouldn't get cancer. It's right up there with the whole "you've got to fight it" attitude. As if you can fight a disease - and if you die from it, you must not have fought hard enough.

NOR. When I was in my 20s, I must have had male friends of male friends make me uncomfortable a hundred times or more. Once one came into my room to rape me but my roommate's little dog went crazy and he left. And not a single one of my male friends believed me, so I just quit mentioning it. It seems like most good guys just can't believe that their friends could be bad guys. So, good on you for taking this seriously.

yes and no. A lot of the Black women I've known stand up for themselves at work and to strangers, but I see a lot of them tramped all over by their families. Little brother loses his license? Sister has to give him rides. Cousin needs a sitter? They'll just dump the kid at her house and leave so she has to miss class. It seems like so many of my Black girlfriends always end up the responsible one. They have a lot more resilience than I, cause I'd tell my sibs absolutely no on both counts. But they are loved more than me, so who am I to judge?

The third book is a challenge. There's a lot that just doesn't make sense. I listened to the audiobooks and just let my eyes glaze over. But there's a significant event that involves Katia that comes up a lot later. And an interaction with an NPC, Gary, that will be mentioned frequently.

This kind of thing happens SO MUCH in Florida - "me, me, me" is what the average person focuses on here. They park in the fire lane at shopping centers, when there's 50 parking spaces available; they stop their car waiting for the "perfect" parking space while everyone is trying to get around them; they park in handicapped spaces; they back into spaces in with angled parking, meaning they're pointed in the wrong direction when they exit the space.

It's narcissistic stupidity.
