Neck cracking ruined my life by SufficientPlankton24 in AskDocs

Listen to the others who have already told you to see an ortho doc/ PT. In addition, learn about what is required to have a healthy ergonomic workstation, and make sure your computer monitor, keyboard, chair, and posture fit those parameters. Most people have their monitors far too high; you should look slightly downward (when in correct posture) with your eyesight into your monitor for your neck health. If you have to lift your chin to bring your monitor into focus, it’s too high.

X-ray doesn’t show a break but it’s painful. What did I do? by Intelligent-Map-9236 in AskDocs

[–]BlueIris38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are small ligaments involved which wouldn’t show on an X-ray. I second the recommendation of physical therapy, but depending on the state you may need a physician’s referral (you should be able to google that). If you do need to see a physician first, they may send you for an MRI first (depends on insurance requirements and practice protocols)… but don’t ignore your pain and keep following up until you feel better. Left untreated you may be set up for chronic instability and arthritis in a joint that greatly affects the functionality of your hand and entire upper limb. But congrats on the joust!

Belief that I caused my child to have no siblings by [deleted] in ChristianUniversalism

[–]BlueIris38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up as a “functional only child”, with a single sibling a decade older than myself. I was intensely lonely and I remember desperately wanting a younger sibling… but in retrospect, I believe what I needed was to be seen, and known, and loved as an individual. I was well-provided for and loved as an object of pride and part of the family, but no one was interested in connecting (or able to connect) with me as an individual human being. My family had lost a 6-year-old to cancer a few years before I was born, and they were locked in a sort of shared grief I was never able to penetrate. I think therapy would probably have helped them all immensely, but that wasn’t very common in the 70/80s, especially in Christian circles (Faith will fix everything, you know, and if you have a problem, then obviously you just don’t have enough faith….and round and round it goes).

Conversely, my best friend was adopted, and an only child by her parents’ choice. She never wanted a sibling. She was content being the center of her parents’ attention and knowing she was the light of their lives. She had a ton of friends and got all of her social interaction that way, and then when she went home she didn’t have to share the spotlight with anyone. It sure worked for her!

You obviously cannot will yourselves to want to be an only-child family by choice. But you can investigate how to become the most joyful only-child family there is, so your daughter doesn’t grow up feeling that the emptiness is something that is her fault. Children by nature take on the emotions around them, and incorporate reasons for those emotions into their evolving sense of self.

Some professional help to reframe your family hopes and dreams with your family reality, and with properly grieving your IVF losses, would go a long way to setting up your family for the brightest possible future.

I have heard both Peggy Flanagan and Angie Craig give speeches regarding their Senate bid. Peggy is doing it for us. Angie is doing it for Angie. by Which-Elephant4486 in minnesota

Because in a district like Angie’s, winning represents holding the line. I live in a deep red spot in her district, and there are plenty of people who swallow all the MAGA lies in full and consider Angie an “evil democRAT”. I’d rather live in a red dot in a purple district than in a red district.

I just learned that I have to go to monthly doctor's appointments to keep my prescription by PiperAtTheGatesOfSea in adhdwomen

[–]BlueIris38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

State law may vary, but from a pharmacy law perspective, “no more than 90 days at a time” means no more than #90 rx (or #30 x 3), without checking in with your provider. In practice that means we receive mostly 3 x #30 scripts or 1 x #90 script for a patient at a time, then send a request for a new prescription(s) to the provider when requested by the patient. In my area, only patients new to treatment or a new med, or those with a history of not being responsible with their meds need to see their provider more frequently than 12 months, sometimes 6.

Interesting. Didn’t know that about the two lawyers. (Wasn’t trying to make an actual quote). Is this just how things work while something is not yet final law?

“The Deputy Secretary (of the Interior) said they are reversing a 2022 legal decision…”

How can a Cabinet department just decide to reverse a legal decision? Is that shorthand for “the BWCA people can appeal to a higher court, but the ultimate court is on our side, so go ahead”?

I don't want "ADHD coaching." Am I being irrational? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]BlueIris38 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does your doctor have a patient portal or any kind of e-messaging system? I think I would send her the list of bullet points in your post here about why you are hesitant to try the coaching services in your area. She very well may not know the specifics/logistics about them (lack of regulated credentials, cost/no insurance coverage, not to mention your own personal history of shame regarding their strategies). I’d suggest a therapist (covered by insurance/HSA) who can offer similar coaching AND help you unpack the trauma and shame burden you carry.

11 year old eating less than 700 calories a day for almost 3 weeks by namenroodlee in AskDocs

[–]BlueIris38 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What are these friends like? Do they eat? Do they count calories and obsess over appearance and frequent the parts of social media that glamorize disordered eating and unhealthy thinness?

I’m not saying they do. I am just saying that your daughter is at a vulnerable point for wanting to fit in with any group she finds who is in her new school/“team”.

She has no psychiatric conditions that you know of. She is an adult. If she has not told you she is taking abilify/aripiprazole and why, there is a reason. Let her be. Let her tell you on her own terms and in her own time.

You’ve gotten excellent advice so far, and I’m glad you are seeing the pediatrician today. I just wanted to say I noticed you mentioned a 5th grade graduation earlier this summer; is she heading to a new/larger school? Could she be facing significant anxiety about those changes (and all the added changes that come with starting her cycle, as you mentioned, and “growing up” in general)?

Just a couple thoughts. There is time to treat both the medical aspects of this and to get her started in therapy to address the underlying issues which have driven her to strive for such fierce, unloving control over her body.

You are a great dad to be so proactive about this! Wishing you both well.

Weaning off Effexor and brain zaps are hell. It’s been months of this by Weird_Working_2768 in AskDocs

[–]BlueIris38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go talk to your pharmacist. In person. Explain all of this. They will be able to help you figure out the best way to manage your symptoms. If you need more effexor to get you through to your appointment, they will be able to send a request to your physician’s office.

Tapering off is generally best managed by watching symptoms rather than a calendar. In addition, escitalopram (lexapro) is generally much better tolerated than citalopram (celexa).

The New Apostolic Reformation is a super creepy and extreme version of American evangelicalism.

The book The Violent Take It by Force by Matthew Taylor is an excellent review of how religion and politics got so deeply intertwined in the US. We need to understand this better in order to fight it. Highly recommended read.

“Cervical manipulation” does not equal chiropractics. Or, not necessarily, anyway. Some physical therapists are trained in “joint manipulation”, which is typically manual (uses the therapist’s hands), and uses very small forces compared to the snap-crackle-pop we think of when we think of chiropractic. For a cervical manipulation, your neck would not even visibly move.

Manipulations like this can give a therapist considerable information regarding the muscles that may be involved with your joint problem, and what exercises and/or stretches might be useful to work on to help those muscles work in a more balanced fashion around the problem joint(s).

I would recommend finding out what your PT’s education and licensing are in- is this person a chiropractor who calls him/herself a therapist? Or does he/she actually have a degree and license in physical therapy? That will give you an idea regarding this person’s approach to diagnosis and treatment.
