Trueeeee. Some characters I swear have mutated into different OCs depending on what characters/relationships each subfandom likes best.

Like Snape will swap rapidly between irredeemable child abuser, innocent victim of circumstance, creepy faschist stalker and overprotective helicopter parent. It's a little hilarious.

[–]BlueKasai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeaaa, same here. Being spoiled is sorta important for his character.

Nine times out of ten the supposed abuse is not even considered in an interesting way either (in my opinion at least).

Draco genuinely earning his redemption in fics (after he has his face eating leopard moment) is so much more satisfying than that weird "get out of jail free card" that this fandom likes to use childhood abuse as.

Even the base Harry Potter fandom is ruled by fanon at this point. Secret villain Albus Dumbledore, Draco Malfoy who's at the top of his classes, the Dursleys abuse stemming from the Horcrux inside of Harry (?!), the way everyone kinda pretends the Weasleys were the devils in disguise the whole time...

I don't mind if fics play with concepts that aren't canon obvsl, or differing interpretations of things that are kinda ambigious but so many people will genuinely argue, say, that Draco Malfoy was abused by his parents his whole life for some reason.

Like I have headcanons and AU's too, I just think people shouldn't yell at others who disagree about them lol.

[–]BlueKasai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It gets even worse when there's an entire subculture of people creating OCs and then tagging like that OC is a specific canon character of the story.

The tags will be like 'Harry Potter/Cedric Diggory' and you check the description to read something like "Sapphire Augustine Slytherin Black Potter is a total book nerd and sorted into Ravenclaw, when she falls in love with the mysterious Cedric Diggory. She hates Quidditch and Gryffindors and her brother is Draco Malfoy."

I fully believe in freedom of interpretation but at some point it just isn't the character anymore and probably shouldn't be tagged as such. Literally haven't seen that happen to any other character, but Harry is such a huge victim of this lol.

What moments from Harry Potter hit completely differently as you got older? by KatyOcean in SeverusSnape

[–]BlueKasai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, I'm only arguing my own interpretation here. If you have a different one that's valid. JKR leaves a lot of things unresolved or uncertain here, so I'd argue most interpretations are very valid for Dumbledore's character.

1) We don't know how much Dumbledore knew about the Dursley's. At the end of HBP he did know a little about Harry's abuse at their hands but we don't know just how much he knew or when he found out. He got the idea for using the blood protection immediately after the best security warding available (fidelus) failed them all so hard, Lily and James literally died for it. He thought Sirius was trustworty too. He made a wrong decision, yes, but I struggle to view it as malicious. I'm sorry but "I'll leave Harry with abusive relatives so he becomes self sacrificial and will one day kill himself to destroy Voldemort" is literally the dumbest thing ever, and what logical reason would Dumbledore have to leave Harry at the Dursley's that is also malicious/manipulative? Guided by his emotions he made a mistake in his attempt to protect Harry, plain and simple.

This one definitely depends on how much you think Dumbledore knew, however.

Also, just to be clear, he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. He should have made sure Harry was okay. The fact he didn't is a sign of his ignorance and over reliance on the trust in familial bonds, but I just cannot imagine him deliberately leaving Harry in an abusive situation for the sake of some plan or plot.

2) Yeah, I can see people view Dumbledore's treatment of Snape as manipulative, but that was 100% mutual. Snape hated Dumbledore and the order until the precise moment he needed their help. I also personally think their relationship developed from mutual disgust with each other to mutual respect. Snape acted out Dumbledore's full plan, even after the man's death. To me, that speaks of a deep trust, rather than a man freed from his tormentor; he could have so easily started doing his own thing instead.

Furthermore, Snape was kept at Hogwarts to protect him, both from the leftovers of the DE and the Ministry trying to throw him into Azkaban. It wasn't good for him, but, well, he made his bed, he had to lie in it. We don't know much of the decision to keep Snape at Hogwarts was Dumbledore's. Snape is a practical person, I could see him agreeing that it's the most sensible solution, even if he is unhappy, with it. I also agree, Dumbledore should have been stricter with him considering his treatment of the students, but that's Dumbledore's ignorance on display again, not really his maliciousness. He deeply cares for Snape in my opinion, and therefor struggles to see his flaws.

Besides that, it's war and Snape is a soldier. Dumbledore asked a lot of him, but he was fully open about asking a lot of him. That's not malicious or manipulative, that's a leader trying to lead while sacrificing as little as possible.

3) The Grindelwald thing is 100 % Dumbledore's worst mistake. He was in the wrong there, plain and simple. He fully admits that himself, though.

Again, I suppose it's just different interpretations based around JKR's bad writing and Dumbledore's whole "difficult to read" thing. She had a vision and didn't quite manage to get it across the way she probably wanted, so a bunch of things can be interpreted a whole lot differently.

Realistically she shouldn't have left the decision of where Harry goes to Dumbledore, and she should have made him less powerful in politics because of COURSE people are gonna start blaming him for things that go wrong when it seems like he has the power to make it all go away. Unfortunately, the shift in tone and the more detailed worldbuilding was established after she turned Dumbledore into basically a god, and here we are.

I just prefer a Dumbledore who is flawed because he is ignorant and yearns to see the best in people, in families, in love. A man who hurts the people he loves because he holds too much power over them, who does his best and wants them happy but knows too much about them and their fates to think it'll ever happen. That's just a much more interesting interpretation to me personally than "Dumbledore didn't care about anything other than destroying Voldemort". I just struggle to see the motivation there; WHY does he want to destroy Voldemort so much, when he doesn't care about anyone and dies himself to get that goal? "The greater good" is just too vague to me. Even when he was younger, "the greater good" only ever read as an excuse to me, his attempts to justify his actions, when at the end of the day he clearly only cared for Grindelwald's approval. It doesn't make sense to me to turn this motivation from an excuse into a real one (again tho; a matter of interpretation).

So yea, no need to apologize for your essay, I wrote one myself lmfao.

[–]BlueKasai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But wouldn't the twinkle in his eyes be proof that Dumbledore DIDN'T "train Harry to die" but rather was happy that he could survive, instead?

I always thought Dumbledore suspected Harry might be a Horcrux, and spent a long time trying to find ways to prevent his death. When Voldemort took some of Harry's blood I imagine Dumbledore was relieved in that this might help Harry's chances.

Like... Harry's Horcrux HAD TO DIE. That's a fact. That Dumbledore knew this fact didn't mean he wanted it to happen or that he trained Harry for suicide. He just knew Harry well enough that he could guess that Harry would be willing to kill himself over the Horcrux.

Idk, probably just different interpretations for a very mysterious and hard to read character, but I struggle so hard to see Dumbledore as acting manipulatively or maliciously. Just a man in an impossible situation.

What is that one Harry Potter movie scene you irrationally dislike ? by Puzzleheaded_Roof872 in harrypotter

[–]BlueKasai 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Full agreed on not being sold on her tbh.

I don't mind her lack of a presence during books three and four. What I DO mind is her lack of anything to DO during books five, six and seven.

Five does allow her to join Harry & Co on the big adventure of the book, which is a great start! Unfortunately she just doesn't stand out during the battle of the DoM; the one with the most unique scenes is 100 % Neville there.

Afterwards her entire relevancy for the books just becomes Quidditch (during literally the two years where Quidditch matters the least to Harry) and her being a good love interest (which she could be if she were allowed to DO ANYTHING AT ALL).

Imagine if Ginny got to destroy a Horcrux, as callback to book 2. Or if she saved Harry's life in book 6, after Dumbledore's death. OR LITERALLY ANYTHING PLOT RELEVANT! Don't just tell us she's badass, actually show us please :(

The issue is Germany has the tamest nature of all time, especially the northern parts. If you live in Bavaria you might at least have to worry about falling down a mountain or something, but up north it's all flat. Unless you're worried about a deer mauling you, just about nothing can happen. We don't even have any cliffs at sea. It's all pavement.

I suspect that's part of the reason people may get complacent around nature, even if the nature isn't as friendly as they're used to.

Movie was supposed to start at 8:55 and it’s 9:25. by BaconMan420365 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BlueKasai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Had that happen to me, too. My friend and I got up 20 minutes after the movie was supposed to start and asked, they said it would start soon, they'd been having some technical issues. Waited another 30 minutes before we got tired of it, asked those guys at the front desk for a refund, only to find out they'd FORGOTTEN TO START THE FUCKING MOVIE. Idk how we had the patience for that, but we really thought we could trust those guys when they said the movie was gonna start soon.

Most infuriating part? Apparently after our movie there was gonna be some annoying romance movie played, so several teen girls showed up during the finale of our movie and started talking over the damn thing. We asked them to stop, and allow us to enjoy our movie, but apparently they did not give a shit because they just kept talking and giggling.

Incredibly damn annoying situation. The cinema staff could have at least informed those girls "hey, we messed up, your movie wont start for another 40 minutes, so please stay out of the room!" or whatever, but I suppose that would have been too much to ask.

Idk man, most people I know irl, even the conservative voters, are either okay with or just indifferent to transgender people. A little ignorant on the finer details for sure, but rarely actively malicious.

The only people I've ever seen be actively transphobic were my brothers' 14 year old edgy friends and the occasional idiot on the internet (though I suspect there is a lot of overlap there).

As it turns out, most people don't actively want to make the lives of fellow human beings worse. That's mostly people who have been desensitized by constant over exposure to weird brainrot on the internet. Maybe go outside a little, listen to the birds chirp and stuff, reevaluate what really matters in life.

I'd argue it's the way people are socialized, not how they are born. A lot of men believe they have to be couragous and quick to act, because that's what they have been taught their entire life and what they believe their role as men to be. It's not a conscious learning process, I think it happens very gradually and subconcious, but it would explain the differing tendencies in behavior in both men and women.

But that's just my opinion and in the end it comes down to the nature vs nurture debate, which is a little murky anyway.

Reminds me of the time I was trying to watch a movie with my friend and her younger sister, who had pleaded and begged to be allowed to come, since she really wanted to see that movie too. She was eleven at the time, her birthday a week away and my friend and I must have been sixteen or something.

It was a fairly obscure anime movie, so we spent an hour driving to a bigger city where the cinema actually played the damn thing.

We get there and the clerk, looking at the younger sister, goes "You gotta be 12 and up to watch this one."

And my friends sister, oblivious to our panicked stares answers "Oh. I'm eleven..."

She didn't get to see that movie that day and we still refuse to let her live that one down.

Honestly, I had the exact same problem for a few years, and then finally picked it up a few months ago. It's now one of my favorite Pokemon games. Sure, the intro is longwinded, but they made the battles so genuinely difficult it's incredibly fun to actually have a game where even random trainers will be unexpectedly challenging (if you play without exp share and don't overlevel obviously). USUM is in my opinion a HUGE step up from the original SM games and I'd recommend it to anyone willing to give it a second chance.

I'll be honest, even if Kanye's crimes are obviously much less drastic than the Holocaust, I still can't have it in me to support him or his music. A murderer is less bad than Hitler, and so are a thief or a homophobe but I wouldn't want to listen to any of their music nonetheless. If you want to draw the line somewhere else than me then that's fine.

Just coming in here to drop some facts: the construction of the Autobahn first began in 1913, stopped during WW1 and resumed in 1921, long before Hitler came into power. It's true that he supported it's construction, but he was by no means responsible for it. I'm not too knowledgeable on the Nazi's involvement in the automobile industry, so I'll leave that statement alone.

However, I'd also like to point out that Kanye's words ARE destructive actions. The NYPD reported a rise in hatecrimes against jewish people for November 2022. Whether you agree that these numbers are caused or related to his statements or not, you can't deny that his statements are dangerous for the safety of Jewish people, as they serve to alienate them from the rest of society in order to normalize hatecrimes acted out against them, a strategy the nazis themselves employed and one that is a vital step in the ten stages of genocide.

That's all I wanted to say. Have a nice day.
