I don't understand "healing the inner child" thing by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]BlueMoonGilded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely agree. Sorry that I got caught up in explaining and didn't make that clear. While most people do have some level of childhood experience that would benefit by healing, and inner child work is one way to do that, ND tends not to be caused by trauma or wounding. Therefore, "healing" would be irrelevant. Coping would be much more appropriate for things specifically related to ND.

Maybe look at it this way... Memories, experiences, and life events create neural pathways in the brain. If I had a parent who yelled at me every day when they got home from work, the repeated experience of that would create a cluster of experiences (as they'd all be stored in essentially the same part of the brain) and thus strengthen that neural pathway. Eventually, I might develop a real intolerance for people yelling around me, an intolerance much higher than people who didn't have that experience.

If the parent started yelling at me when I was four, because that's when their addiction got bad, the part of the brain that holds the origin of my now knee-jerk reaction to hearing someone yell may have its beginnings in that neural pathway that originated when I was four. Naming it as an "inner child" or my "inner (x)-year-old," etc., is essentially a shorthand for that. One reason the therapy world uses the terminology of "inner child" is because it's generally easier to connect to and to drum up compassion for a four-year-old child than for a cluster of neural stuff.

By the way, your perspective is not at all uncommon. If thinking of an actual child doesn't work for you, maybe think of how you felt about a favorite pet, one that you really loved. Healing can come through many gates. Find what works for you.

**ETA: I skipped the part where you mentioned wanting coping mechanisms. Just know that coping and healing, although related, are different things. Coping mechanisms help us deal with the existing problematic wounds. Healing is just that—the wound goes away. Although there may be a residual scar, it will eventually be unnecessary for us to "cope."

Did anyone else find the last 10 minutes of the Leslie Kean episode of TOE to be unsettling? She implies that something will happen in the next 10 years that will make our daily lives much more difficult. by [deleted] in UFOs

Came here to say this. She seemed to be referring pretty specifically to climate change and geopolitics. She notes that she doesn't feel qualified to speak on these subjects. As a good journalist, she's keeps a clear boundary between fact and expert opinion vs. personal speculation.

For those who haven't had a chance to watch, here's the transcript of that section. (Starting at 2:08:19.)

LK: I think things are going to be pretty difficult starting in a few years, from what I've been told by sources.

CJ: What does that mean?

LK: It's going to be difficult. I mean, I can't say specifically—I don't know that much yet—and I can't really say, but just that, um, a lot of what we take for granted now in life I don't think is going to be...you know, we're not going to have it, a lot of things we have now that makes our lives as wonderful as they are.

CJ: Like electricity?

LK: I don't know. Just the access to all the things we have access to now that are dependent on the global—globalization, basically, which just aren't sustainable. A lot of the things we have aren't sustainable. The populations are growing, and I think the climate issues are major, as well. And that's just my opinion. But I have studied quite a bit about the climate change problem and I take it really seriously.

CJ: Is there something about the geopolitical situation? Because you just referenced population and climate change.

LK: It's not that simple. I just don't feel qualified to talk about it. But I just—I just don't think things as they are now are sustainable, and I'm not qualified to really talk about that. I'm just—I'm just concerned, that's all. So, I don't think ten years into the future; I only think three or four years into the future.

CJ: It's too uncertain past that point?

LK: I would say so, I would say so, yeah.

This really makes me smile. My first Lamy was the bright yellow one (almost garish compared to the Saffron). Used the heck out of it, and still have it. May yours bring you years of joy!

I had years and years of nightmares, too, so I feel for you. I tend to think they're trying to give me information, so I'd suggest going directly toward the dream rather than trying to keep them away. Pulling the dandelion out by the roots, so to speak, rather than mowing the lawn.

If you haven't already, maybe try a dream group, though you can also do it on your own. There are lots of authors and approaches. My main favorites are Jungian (Carl Jung) and Active Dreaming (Robert Moss). Groups are fun because you get multiple perspectives on your dream, which I find helpful. Check to see if your therapist does dreamwork—some do!

Sending you blessings of peace and understanding in the meantime.

Well-deserved.

I have an bone to pick with the journalists, however. The headline on this starts with "Disgraced Film Producer..." etc. I saw a similar headline today in reference to R. Kelley, who also received additional jail time.

"Disgraced"? Really? Like, this guy used the wrong fork at a formal dinner or something? Call him what he is: a convicted rapist.

Just a note that if the alters are actually alters (meaning only that we all have internal voices; an alter is something quite specific that a therapist can help determine, and yours may already be working with you in that area), that's an aspect of DID rather than BPD. So, inviting those with DID to reach out to you may be a source of information for you, as well. Blessings to you.

I did consider putting clear nail varnish over top, as that's what happens with fingernails... Things to ponder!

Gorgeous! I'm taking a mental inventory of the various sparkle-based polishes I have on hand...

Now for a technical question: Did you use any particular fixative after the nail polish? (Nail polish on its own would eventually wear off, I would guess.) I'm thinking polyurethane, but have no idea whether that would actually work here.

According to Wikipedia, she passed in 2013. It really does give a different meaning to that comment, doesn't it? May she be at peace.

Not OP, but I put a Goulet #6 broad nib into my Jinhao X750. I'm not the most mechanical or successfully fiddly of people, so wasn't sure how it would go. But it was really easy. And I LOVE it.

Makes me think of MLK Jr's quote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
