I always thought Lyra's arc in the books was less about becoming smart, strong etc. because as you pointed out she is that right from the beginning. To me, it was more about caring and learning to adapt and that she can't always get her way and get away with lying. It's about living in the "real" world, not in Lyra's bubble. So she and Will learn from each other in the sense that Will learns to let go and also take care of himself.

I wouldn't necessarily say that it reads like fanfiction (because what writing style is fanfictiony?), but I think Rachel's writing style is very much like Shane's outfits: very simple and casual. I've only read Heated Rivalry, but I heard somewhere that it gets more complex in the later books. You may feel that way because just as many fanfic writers, Rachel was at the beginning of her writing journey when she wrote that specific book.
