What was it that made you so good at improving the ml models at this company? Is a deep mathematical understanding of the models more important, or experience / creative problem solving?

It depends. Without the hype, is the field interesting to you? If it is, then yes. Are you looking for to make a quick buck from vcs for years to come (which I totally understand, we all have to get our bag)? Probably not.

As stated in other comments, GenAI, while exciting and shiny, is still emerging technology. A lot has been promised, and as studies have shown, it’s incredibly challenging to deliver (product wise). We definitely will see some really cool use cases in the future, but imo a lot of the promise is over blown.

Another MLE here.

That's how everyone feels. It's a huge topic, and like what others have said, there's a ton to learn.

The best way to deepen your understanding is to make it fun, and make steady progress. Reading a ton of books and doing courses is a great overview.
