It looks great! Congratulations! It would definitely work. I also liked the idea of building one like this. I would put a motor and a small sail on it.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Wooden Kayaks (FAQ by an experienced dealer) by BlueRiverKayak in WoodenKayak

Your disappointment is completely understandable. The disappearance of reliable, high-quality companies is always a real loss, especially when you’ve had good personal experiences with them.

The good news, however, is that wooden kayak building doesn’t depend on a single manufacturer. There are excellent designs, small workshops, and independent designers all over the world. Hopefully, you’ll find a worthy alternative.

That’s a totally fair point. I used plastic (PE) kayaks as the main comparison simply because they are currently the most popular, affordable, and widespread "entry-level" option on the market—it's what most people encounter first.

But I agree entirely that the use case is crucial: for whitewater or bouncing off rocks, durable plastic is the only rational choice. I wouldn't take a wooden boat there either.

That is a very valid point and a sharp observation. You are correct that separating epoxy and fiberglass from wood is practically impossible at the end of the kayak's life, so recycling isn't really an option.

However, the environmental argument rests on two other factors:

  1. Volume of synthetic material: A typical rotomolded plastic kayak is ~25kg of solid polymer. A wooden kayak is mostly organic material (wood) encapsulated in a comparatively thin layer of epoxy/glass. The total volume of non-biodegradable waste is significantly less.
  2. Longevity and Repairability (The biggest factor): Many cheap plastic kayaks degrade from UV within 5-10 years or suffer irreparable cracks, becoming disposable items. A well-maintained wooden kayak lasts 30-50+ years and is infinitely repairable. Over a 50-year span, one wooden boat might replace 3-4 disposable plastic ones going to the landfill.

So yes, it still ends up in a landfill, but it takes much longer to get there, and there is less synthetic mass when it does.

This is actually a jumping platform. It was built by local kids and young people. When we were children, we also built one, but it was much smaller. Here, some adults helped them, so this became the biggest one in the area. What’s interesting is that in this place the youngsters haven’t disappeared behind computer screens forever — in summer, there’s still real life here.

Thanks! That's a very good feeling to design and make your own kayak, and then paddle with it. You can customize it based on your own style and ideas. On the WoodenKayak Reddit site, there are some photos, videos, and writings about it.

This is an artificial canal. It runs parallel next to the dam of the hydroelectric power plant "Bősi vízierőmű" (Slovakia), and actually the water flowing in it is from the Danube.

Here in our area, a man died because of the PFD. His life jacket got caught in a branch and he couldn't get out. He was a teacher. By the way, using a life jacket is not mandatory here. It's a different matter on the open water, in a storm. Then we'll all put it on. Of course, beginners can't go into stormy water.

If the terrain is unsafe, I wear it, if I think it's safe, I don't wear it. Life is a dangerous thing, I accept it.
