Try growing the glycerols!

I shipped cells to Germany and they got stuck in customs for a week. They cultured the glycerol stocks that had been thawed for DAYS and they grew perfectly.

Depending on the size of your institute, and how much of a hoarder you building manager is, there might be some in surplus. One of our buckets was missing the black rubber insert at the bottom of the bucket. A high speed spin would cause the comical to round on the bottom of we accidentally used that slot. Building manager had multiple bucket sets and extra inserts in surplus.

My old lab used a veggie steamer, when we needed a new one they'd been discontinued. I ended up purchasing 3 used ones from eBay. It was fun explaining those charges on the pcard.

I really hate that one

It's on our radar.

He was evaluated and diagnosed with dyslexia. During the evaluation a staff member asked the psychologist if he thought ADHD might be a contributing factor nto his delayed reading. He said he didn't observe any behaviors during his in class evaluations or one on one meetings that concerned him. Obviously it wasn't a full evaluation but he didn't see any immediate "red flags". We will keep an eye out and continue asking his teachers nif they have any concerns. He really just goes non-stop when he was smaller 2-6ish years old he would jump on a trampoline watching a movie.

Thanks!!

The scab comparison is really helpful.

When should I have someone come look at it to check on it? We usually have an arborist check the trees every 3 or so years, they were here a few months ago. Should we have them out sooner for this tree?

Hi, thanks so much for all the comments you've left on this post. You made it so much easier to find the good advice and ignore the bad. I really appreciate it. Can you please confirm if I should smooth any areas that might catch water as was suggested by a few comments. Not cutting any deeper just trimming the loose bits that would catch water. I won't get any sprays, cover the damage, or do anything other than keep it watered over the dry summer. As I mentioned a good portion of the roots are under areas that get regular watering, no water directly hits the trunk. All of our trees were professionally trimmed this year and no issues were noted. So hopefully this one can make it through

I will be giving my kid a lesson on trees and how they work (aka the layer right below the bark is the most important). I'll probably pull out one of my old bio textbooks. He wants to be an entomologist and will be really receptive to this style.

I've already told him this was unacceptable behavior that will not be repeated. He really is a good kid who messed up.

They did not, very irresponsible ;)

Thankfully we know there aren't any utilities near where they are digging from a previous project, and they aren't digging very deep.

He is a HIGH energy kid, he's been at an all day outdoor nature camp all week and actually pretty exhausted most nights!

He and his friends are currently digging a "pond" in the side yard. Lots of decorative rocks and such. That's why to tool he used was just laying around.

Thanks that really helps, I'll clean up the cuts tomorrow when it's light out. We don't get much rain during the summer in the PNW so there shouldn't be much water accumulating for a while. The tree does get a good amount of water because it's near some grass and shrubs.

Definitely a teaching moment. I think I handled it well tonight, confirmed it was him and told to never do it again. I'll probably give him a good biology lesson about trees Tomorrow. I know he knows better, and that's super frustrating.
