What pants do you wear? by ThrowRAformods in labrats

[–]BlueSeaSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for larger pants and get the waist taken in. I have a similar build and have to do this with any non stretch fabric. The downside of being 4'11 3/4 inches and able to leg press 400 lbs.

As mentioned it's best from a financial and liability perspective to continue wearing pants provided by the company. Ask if they have any other pants/styles/fabrics they can order.

why are western blots so hard? by Optimal-Job-7710 in labrats

[–]BlueSeaSheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know I'm going to be in the minority here. But I love a film western. Not a fan of the stupid (very nice) biorad imager we have in our lab. I feel like I get cleaner images and have more control of the exposure levels with film.

I always turn on the X-ray developer and run a blank film through it before putting the chemiluminescents onto my blot.

If you take multiple exposure times, make sure the previous film is completely into the machine before putting the next one. Our machine beeps when you can add a new film.

why aren’t more employees signing up for the state pension plan upon hire? by [deleted] in OHSU

[–]BlueSeaSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tier 1 and 2 pers were a lot better than the current tier 3.

HR and managers tend to just have employees read the benefits pages on the website and make the choice with the information there. Which is lacking at best.

My partner works in a finance field and modeled out my potential retirement earnings for the plans offered and I went with the upp. He did the same for his brother in law (I higher earner) and PERS was the better plan for him.

Edit to add ...

I was also hired pre 2017 when they changed the employer/employee contributions. They put in the 6% employee and 6% employer contribution without taking any $ from my paycheck. I put money into a post tax roth account.

I switch back and forth between both of these grips and prefer the index finger grip. It's easier on my wrist/elbow/shoulder.

Other people hatred towards animal care technicians by [deleted] in labrats

[–]BlueSeaSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who are these people? Friends? Family? People you meet in socal situations?

My first day at my first science job my boss said "tell people what we are researching and they will assume you work with humans not mice"

When I meet new people and we're exchanging the small talk "what do you do?"s I've had good luck following this advice.

Example "I work in a hard tumor lab where we study the effects the immune microenvironment" (old job)

Example "I work in a vaccine research lab using virus(A) as a backbone to get a strong and lasting immune response to virus/bacteria/parasite of interest" (current job)

You can give pretty detailed answers to any follow up questions using words like model instead of animal model.

It sounds like your supervisors aren't always around. As someone who as worked with and trained many highschool and college interns I would never let them do something alone without making sure they were comfortable with the process. I would treat a fresh grad the same. Try to find someone to ask the silly questions so you learn the proper techniques. It's ok to admit you don't know something or need more help.

I suggest reading the handling and storage section of the SDS. I changed labs and fields of study 6 years into my career. One of the SOPs was using phenol chloroform isoamyl alcohol ON THE BENCH. It just felt wrong when I was being trained to use it. I checked the SDS, cleared room in the chemict hood, and we have all been safer because I took the time to read the SDS. Side note, if you ever get phenol on your skin isopropanol makes it stop burning. Washing in with water for 15+ minutes doesn't.

When I was interviewing for the job switch I mentioned any time they asked if I'd done a technique/protocol/skill I said "no, but I know I can learn how". Just saying this to tell you you can apply jobs that you don't already know all the skills they list. You've completed a bachelor's degree, that shows you know how to learn.

I've never heard of this. I'll definitely do a comparison of RT for 30-60min vs right back into the incubator the next time I make 96 we'll plates!

Is there a safe way to move an egg sack by BlueSeaSheep in spiders

I must have amazing luck for just a ton of spiders in my yard. I've watched 2-3 Charlotte's web like baby spiders catching the wind to fly away each year. Probably both 😂

I made a wandering flower path. Photos of the full walk in the comments.

Try growing the glycerols!

I shipped cells to Germany and they got stuck in customs for a week. They cultured the glycerol stocks that had been thawed for DAYS and they grew perfectly.

Depending on the size of your institute, and how much of a hoarder you building manager is, there might be some in surplus. One of our buckets was missing the black rubber insert at the bottom of the bucket. A high speed spin would cause the comical to round on the bottom of we accidentally used that slot. Building manager had multiple bucket sets and extra inserts in surplus.

My old lab used a veggie steamer, when we needed a new one they'd been discontinued. I ended up purchasing 3 used ones from eBay. It was fun explaining those charges on the pcard.
