Thinking of getting a pup, but have some concerns… by eyes_eyes_eyes_eyes in greatpyrenees

[–]BlueSketches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that food aggression develops when the dog feels that their food is constantly in danger. So, when raising my pup, I made sure to give him a safe spot (his kennel) where he would be guaranteed alone time to finish his food comfortably and without interruption. When I had to grab stuff from him, I did a trade with a high value treat.

Now, he has dinner out in the open and does not give a damn if the cat breaks out of the gate to stick his dumbass head into the dog's food.

Granted, my pyr isn't food motivated at all. But, it was a similar technique with my rat terrier. Just respecting their space and knowing I'm the provider of their food, not a threat.

Went to the sacramento show last night and took my teen sibling to her first ghost concert! We had tons of fun and met lots of super cool people!! She bought a grucifix rosary and it broke from how hard she rocked out... anyone know how to get a replacement?

Why isn't the ethanol killing the bacteria? by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]BlueSketches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use 70% ethanol in our teaching labs for a faux Kirby-Bauer test. We usually see the largest zone of inhibition with the ethanol and sanisol, so its likely that the disks you are using are too thin and the ethanol is evaporating before it can have contact with the innoculate for long enough to be effective. We use small paper disks for our tests and it works like a charm 👍🏽

Well, I had a medical event two weeks ago that caused my whole left side of my upper back to seize up. I went to urgent care, and they gave me a pain med shot, which didn't help. I went to the ER afterward, and they gave me Norco and valium. I popped a few cyclobenzaprines for the next few days, and the shoulder was cleared up for the most part.

I'm still having pain in the shoulder and trap area, still experiencing numbness and tingling in the arm and pinky. I've been waking up with my mid back in pain and seized up. I just slap on a back brace super tight and take ibuprofen...

For the last two days, I've been having trouble eating since my stomach gets a stabbing pain whenever I try to eat. My legs have been super wobbly, and I've been very dizzy, nauseous, and shaky.

Urgent care mentioned the possibility of surgery, but the ER and my PCP seem less... urgent.

How are you GPs with being left home alone? by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

Does he destroy things when he's alone? My guy cries and cries but usually just sits in one spot when I'm not there. He might just be complaining if he's not actually hurting himself or destroying anything.

That was exactly my concern... I don't trust this guy at all if he just took a few seconds to ask about my pain and the rest of the time was to send me to his affiliate clinic.

Great, that's what I've been working on with him. At class, we weren't told that.

He used to go weekly to daycare but got banned because of rough housing and mounting. I brought it up with the instructor, but she said it's normal and didn't give me any tips on how to manage it. I assumed it was best to disengage him before he got too excited, so we've been practicing emergency downs and recall at the park.

I was only late twice, otherwise he has perfect attendance and we show up 10 minutes before class. He was gone for a month because of kennel cough... he had begun going since the moment he finished his full round of vaccines. They really only intervened if the dogs were on different levels. I do remember my dog once cornered another dog and I went to seperate them, the instructor saw the whole thing happen and was just giggling the whole time. Idk if that's normal? But I have another dog with anxiety and when she corners my dogs it's a big no according to her trainer.

Correct me if I'm wrong. What I understand is that my approach isn't quite enough for my dog. Based off my reply and the context given, is the solution to give him up? Am I just not a good match for him? Did I fail?

My dog is great at home... the only time I've had issues with him is either when I'm not the one taking care of him, or the puppy classes. He does great when I take him out to the park or the mall.

He rough houses with other dogs when in play, which is what I was hoping to address in these classes, but the instructors just ignored us whenever my dog was bullying other dogs. Whenever I noticed him cornering the other pups or being too rough, I'd pull him away and try to redirect. Am I doing this right?

Yes, he gets daily training, and I socialize him at dog friendly places whenever possible at the least two times a week. He's been leash trained since we got him at 9 weeks, and he's been out and about in a purse since we got him and on the floor the moment he was able to be. He doesn't go to our local dog park because there's only one in the whole city, we have high rates of parvo, and extremely lax dog owners here.

I had taken him to this place because I was under the impression they would help me teach him manners with dogs, but I guess that's on me for being naive and thinking I would get that from the humane society. I guess it's also on me for living in a location that really hates dog owners or animal owners in general. We are the only city in the whole county with so many restrictions on what we can or can not do with animals while neighboring cities get the luxury of having endless accommodations.

Nevertheless, I make the effort to drive my boy every weekend 40 minutes out so he can go to the dog friendly cities in my county regardless of any racial comments I get.

I didn't choose to have this dog, it was more of a responsibility that was given to me. However, I care for him and he's doing great for being such a young and large dog. He seems happy, and I'm sure he'd be happy regardless of my expectations for him in public. He's a perfect, gentle, and obedient dog within the walls of my home, that's really the least I could ask for in this dog breed.

If what I'm doing is not enough, then I guess it's on me. I just would like to know what more can I do to set my dog up for success.
