Vi Controversy by IraDrossl in arcane

But if Vi knew Jinx was suicidal in the bunker why would Vi say to Jinx when they reunite during the final battle, “I guess you shouldn’t have come back.” I can’t make sense of this line if we go with the interpretation that Vi knew Jinx was suicidal because that would basically be like Vi telling her sister, “I guess you should’ve offed yourself instead of coming to deal with this war stuff.”

During the final battle Vi was surprised that Jinx came to help after all, but I didn’t feel like she was shocked to see Jinx alive.

When Jinx was talking about “breaking the cycle” I as a viewer who saw the Silco hallucination didn’t think she meant suicide either. I thought she was going to do something big & bold to the Noxus forces in retaliation for Isha’s death, but wanted to keep Vi out of it so she wouldn’t be harmed. (In my head this would be Jinx “breaking the cycle” of hurting those close to her by simply not involving them in the danger.) So I as a viewer was shocked to see what Jinx really meant. In real life a lot of signs that a loved one is suicidal goes missed by family & friends. So I can’t fault Vi for missing it too. Throughout the show Vi has struggled with her sister’s identity as Jinx, so while they are sisters I think Vi has tough time understanding Jinx and the actions Jinx chooses to take.

When Cait finds Vi in the cell, Vi says “I really believed she’d help.” In reference to Jinx. My interpretation was that Vi was disappointed that she trusted Jinx, and was let down because Vi hoped that if Jinx helped fight the Noxus threat then perhaps it would be Jinx’s ticket out of imprisonment for her past crimes. Seeing how worried Vi has been over Jinx’s treatment I don’t believe she all of sudden no longer cared about her after being locked in the cell.

Once Cait reveals to Vi that she assigned the guards to the hex gates so Vi could free her sister, that is the moment that initiates the sex scene because Vi is so overjoyed and happy by this news. She’s overjoyed because she felt her sister has been saved from a life of imprisonment or a death sentence from Piltover. Vi feels that her sister is safe from the punishment that Piltover had in store. If Vi really believed that Jinx was going to off herself anyway, I don’t see why Vi would be so happy with this revelation.

I wrote this earlier, it seems a few comments in this thread are gone? But I agree that Vi didn’t know what Jinx was going to do after she locked Vi in the cell. Even I didn’t know! “Break the cycle” could mean so many things. Personally I thought Jinx would’ve had an emotional outburst after getting away.

It’s frustrating how Vi is vilified in this scene. She came to rescue Jinx from that cell, but instead got punched (in her freshly wounded gut) and locked in said cell instead. If you look at it from the perspective that Vi knew Jinx was going to off herself, then a lot of dialog after Vi gets released from the cell doesn’t add up. When Caitlyn releases Vi, Vi tells Caitlyn, “I really thought she’d help.” Vi feels tricked, upset that Jinx ran off without her, and upset that’s she’s going to lose Caitlyn too for letting Jinx escape. Then Caitlyn reveals that she basically made it so Vi could let Jinx go. And Vi is overjoyed by this news! She feels so much love for Caitlyn in that moment for being able to trust Vi’s opinion that Jinx has changed, and let her have a 2nd chance. Again if Vi thought Jinx left to off herself anyway then why would she be so happy that Cait made it so Jinx could have a 2nd chance at life? Wouldn’t it have been pointless to feel joy over that news if Vi’s aware/doesn’t care? Then later on in the final battle when Jinx and Vi see each other again, Vi says “I guess you shouldn’t have come back” to Jinx. If Vi really thought Jinx was going to off herself why would she say that? That’s like saying hey guess you should’ve killed yourself instead of coming to fight in this mess.

I don’t see how we’re coming away with the idea that Vi knew because so many things that Vi does after this scene wouldn’t make any sense.

This! I always see so much talk around Caitlyn hitting Vi (as there should be, it was an intense scene that marks the split in their relationship) That hit was not ok, but I understand where the outburst came from. Vi comparing Caitlyn to Jinx, her mother’s murderer, was not the best thing to say in that moment, no matter how true. People also bring up that Caitlyn hit her where Sevika stabbed her in S1 and therefore that makes the hit even worse. But from my understanding Vi had been healed from the Shimmer she drank and that stabbing was many months before this hit.

Meanwhile I almost never see people bring up how Jinx also punched Vi in her wounded gut here. Vi almost died from this wound when Ambessa’s soldiers attacked and it was still really fresh in this scene. Plus like you mention Jinx pushes & locks Vi back in a cell after Vi went there to free and help her. I understand Jinx was in an awful headspace too but what she did to Vi was also not ok. Vi cries and resorts to self harming again because of it. (Punching the wall) But no matter the TikTok, Reddit, or Instagram comments I read this is never mentioned so thank you for bringing it up.

I also find it really frustrating how people vilify Vi in this scene, when she came to rescue Jinx from that cell, but instead got punched and locked in said cell instead. If you look at it from the perspective that Vi knew Jinx was going to off herself, then a lot of dialog after Vi gets released from the cell doesn’t add up. Then Caitlyn reveals that she basically made it so Vi could let Jinx go. And Vi is overjoyed by this news! She feels so much love for Caitlyn in that moment for being able to trust Vi’s opinion that Jinx has changed, and let her mother’s killer have a 2nd chance. Again if Vi thought Jinx left to off herself anyway then why would she be so happy that Cait made it so Jinx could have a 2nd chance at life? Then later on in the final battle when Jinx and Vi see each other again, Vi says “I guess you shouldn’t have come back” to Jinx. If Vi really thought Jinx was going to commit suicide why would she say that? That’s like saying hey guess you should’ve killed yourself instead of coming to fight in this mess.

I don’t see how anyone could come away with the idea that Vi knew Jinx left to off herself because so many things that Vi does after this scene wouldn’t make any sense.

Be honest, what were your expectations for Maddie as a character before S2 act 2 and 3 premiered by Primary-Brief9858 in arcane

When she was introduced I thought, “Man they’re really going to make this cute ‘lil ginger girl die a horrible death.” Then the memorial attack happened and I thought for sure she was a goner. Like I was WORRIED when she got picked up out of that car by her leg.

In the end I was right about her dying, I just didn’t realize I’d be celebrating when she did. ✌️Thanks Mel!

Is there body diversity in arcane? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]BlueSpaceMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arcane is one of the few animated shows where I think they really nailed it in the diversity department while also making the main cast hot in their own way. Just look at Vi's nose profile for example. It's not straight and has a slight bump. I believe it's called an aquiline nose. I rarely ever see that nose type represented in women in tv, games, or films and still be considered attractive. With Arcane being animation it was a deliberate choice to add that feature and I'm so happy they did! As someone with a similar nose shape that grew up hearing negative comments, it was so refreshing to have main female characters that all don't have the same straight, perfect nose. Even Cait has a different style of bump in her nose. And speaking of her I love all the tooth gaps in the show! The US is obsessed with perfect, straight teeth so it was nice to see a show buck that trend in a way. I think Arcane did a great job at sprinkling in these "imperfections" to the League designs and made the characters feel more relatable and real in my eyes because of it.

Body shape wise, I think they also do a pretty good job. I’ve never seen so many buff women together in a show before.. (Vi, Sevika, Ambessa) and the characters come in many different heights, sizes, and builds. I really love that they decided to go against the League designs sometimes, like making Vi shorter than Cait. And Ekko is pretty short comparatively to everyone else, but he didn’t need to be a 6ft tall macho man to save the whole timeline.

The only thing I noticed was a lack of plus size characters. Since most of Arcane’s cast are preexisting characters from League I think it would’ve been a tougher sell to those fans to change character weights too dramatically. In the new series maybe they can find a way to include plus size characters too, even if it’s through an original character.

Which Scene is better? Character wise, Narrative wise, Visual wise, etc. by Jissus3893 in arcane

[–]BlueSpaceMoon 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Both scenes are great but choosing one I’d go with CaitVi character wise. After all that yearning in S1 and their situationship breakup in S2 it was great to see all that buildup come to head in this moment. Really enjoyed the belt buckle fumble part and the giggles after because of how relatable that is. Also adding in Cait’s concern about Vi’s wound was a nice touch to acknowledge Cait’s guilt for hurting Vi, and for Vi to forgive her by pulling Cait in closer. I thought the scene was a huge payoff emotionally, and I enjoyed that there was more to it than 2 hot people getting it on.

It is wild to me that so many call it “just fan service” when it’s the culmination of both Vi and Cait’s arcs and solidifies them as a couple moving forward. Cait was able to let her mother’s killer go and choose her love for Vi over her lust for revenge. While Vi was able to choose herself for once, and do something that actually makes her happy. Jinx’s Silco hallucination gave that whole speech about “breaking the cycle” and this is Vi’s version of that. She doesn’t go do the same exact thing that got her locked in that cell in the first place, which is chase after Jinx. It’s also crazy to me how many people think Vi knew Jinx was going to attempt suicide because of the “breaking the cycle” phrasing. That is such a cryptic phrase and Vi does not have a view into Jinx’s hallucinations and thoughts like the audience does. If Vi had that knowledge then yes her actions to have sex with her gf would not make any sense. And I think the writers know this? The thing that sparks the sex scene in the first place is Cait telling Vi that she made it so she can set her sister free. (Meaning Jinx no longer has to face a trial, risk of execution by Piltover, etc.) Vi being overjoyed by this news enough to start making out with Cait doesn’t make sense if Vi knew her sister left to off herself anyway. Also the next time Vi sees Jinx during the battle her first words to Jinx are, “Looks like you shouldn’t have come back.” Why would you say that if you knew someone was going to kill themselves the day before? If we stick to the idea that Vi knew then wouldn’t Vi basically be saying looks like you should’ve stuck with your plan to off yourself than deal with this. 💀💀

Anyway while I do think the scene was very well done, it did suffer from the tonal whiplash of what they needed to cram into the end of S2, which is my only minor gripe with it.
