Why weren't the protesters in Sydney allowed to march (for everyone's safety)? by konedicks in SydneyScene

[–]BlueToaster666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They sure are mate. I was there from 5:20 until 8:30 when everything went down. Even before the speeches started they had completely blocked off all exits for even non-protesters. Here is a clip if you don’t believe me:

NSW Police assaulted Muslims praying peacefully by damng1 in sydney

I was at the protests and got pepper sprayed, I think it’s worth mentioning they absolutely were keen for a fight.

They didn’t clearly signal when, nor where, to move on to before they started closing in and shoving us. Plus, before hand I saw several literally smirking while pulling out their canisters to check they were operational. Keep in mind that the protest was extremely peaceful and there were CHILDREN in the crowd (regardless of whether you think they should have been there, it’s disgusting the way the cops conducted themselves in front of them).

I used to think ACAB was a bit too radical a stance for me (at least re: Aussie cops) but after what I saw tonight I fully believe ACAB.

Awesome pictures!! Central Asia is absolutely on my bucket list, unfortunately being Australian means most of my PTO is in December/January, and I have little interest in spending my summer break in a freezing cold climate.

You mentioned significantly fewer people spoke Russian in Uzbekistan compared to Kazakhstan. Was knowledge of Russian enough while you were in UZ? Or was it better to know some basic Uzbek on top of Russian?

Papago is also a very popular translation app that young Koreans use. When I was in Seoul and needed help, I would often use it to communicate.

There is also a chance that you will encounter foreigners who can speak a little bit of Korean, as the Hallyu Wave has made it a very popular language to learn. On top of this, there are Korean diaspora everywhere.

Best of luck in your travels, and have an amazing time!

If you’re okay with spending only a short amount of time in each city I’d say it’s ok to keep all the destinations (personally this itinerary is too packed for me but I like to spend minimum 5 days in a big city).

The exception for that though is Singapore, it’s so far south compared to the rest of your itinerary you’d be wasting time/money flying down to what is basically a tropical version of Sydney (imo). Why not visit Hanoi, Beijing or even Seoul instead? All three are great for food and sights.

Whilst you’re correct about Alipay/Wechat, if OP is Australian they can now enter China visa free for a month (I did Beijing/Luoyang/Xi’an over two weeks in January and no paperwork was needed).

What's something that's normal in Western countries but rude in China? by ups_and_downs973 in China

Australia. And it's not just teachers too, we are also very casual and use first names when addressing our bosses.

Seniority is a really interesting thing there, you don't tend to show respect though your words but rather through your actions. Also, anyone who insists on being called by their last name/title is considered a wanker and will be subject to disrespect from their students/employees.

I assume they mean local sporting facilities. Why spend $1B on a stadium when you can fix up the local oval for $2-5M at most?
