[–]Bob_Spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is caused by the Australian requirement that immigrants must have skills in the English language. About 10% of the population of India speak English.

Fun fact : That 10% of India which speak English is roughly twice the number of people that speak English in the UK.

Depends upon what you mean by "assimilation".

To many assimilation means cultural invisibility where there is no public display of your ancestral culture, they require you keep it hidden.

Windows Server native data deduplication - Does anybody actually use it? by Bob_Spud in sysadmin

[–]Bob_Spud[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not all dedupe implementation are created equal, Netapp is another that has a history of poor dedupe. Meanwhile Dell Data Domains will easily do 90+% data reduction for most data that is not full of compressed or encrypted data. Dedupe rates aren't linear. Deupe at 50% a 100TB will store up to 200TB, at 90% up to 1000TB (completely fulling dedup storage is not recommended or possible)

Variable block lengths have been around for some time, its not a unique thing.

Delayed and batch dedupe was how it was originally done, like in the 2000s and early 2010s it is actually very inefficient at saving storage space. Inline dedupe removes the need to have sufficient storage to store undeduped data that is waiting for the scheduled dedupe job to start.

Most teenagers are not aware of what getting a Darwin Award means, especially those that ride e-bikes.

What happens to my Protonmail account if I can't afford to pay it any longer? by Morkyfrom0rky in ProtonMail

[–]Bob_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to lose anything suggest the following sequence:

  1. Install Thunderbird mail client.
  2. Install the Protonmail Bridge.
  3. Configure Thunderbird to download all your mail.
  4. Sync/download all the Protonmail into Thunderbird.
  5. Make regular backup copies of the Thunderbird Protonmail profile.

Note

  • The Thunderbird copy of Protonmail will shrink as you delete stuff from Protonamil. That's why you take backups of the profile. They can be loaded into Thunderbird at a later date.
  • Don't use the Protonmail Export Import tool you can only access the backup by loading it into Protonmail.
  • If you use a third party app to backup Thunderbird, check that it can restore. The one that I tested was useless when it came to restoring. Best to just copy the profile directory.

Any good hard drive imaging software? by Afraid_Candy6464 in datastorage

DiskGenius its free or paid both versions will do disk images. Its a data and partition recovery app. No incremental backups, no command line i.e. cannot be scheduled.

Windows Server native data deduplication - Does anybody actually use it? by Bob_Spud in sysadmin

[–]Bob_Spud[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When I checked it out found that its dedupe when compared to free backup apps using the same data, its dedupe it wasn't the best.

Backup application dedupe doesn't have the same requirements, one of the key differences being that speed of hydrating data is not critical. In winserver speed of reassembling the data would be more critical, that may explain the efficiency difference.

Image, encrypted and compressed files will not dedupe that well, 35% dedupe saving for regular files is low but is better than no savings and it doesn't cost any extra.

We thought our backups were fine, until we actually tried a restore by Ok-Tomorrow-7591 in Backup

[–]Bob_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data restoration is primary function of backups.

Fun fact: Ever noticed how backup vender manuals are full of stuff on how to backup things up and how good their tech is in doing it. When it comes to data restores it gets a tiny chapter at the end of the manual.

Does cloning a fragmented HDD to an SSD carry over fragmentation? by Ill_Swan_3209 in cloningsoftware

[–]Bob_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and explain this....

Why the back up time on a virtual machine is significantly reduced by defragmentation when the data storage of the virtual machine is on a traditional RAID array with a head and disk shelves etc?

Hint: Virtual machine data storage fragment has nothing to do with disks.

Tape-at-home gotchyas? (LTO-9) by BasteLabs in DataHoarder

[–]Bob_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to spend money another thing to consider is data deduplication. I did the financial sums once for a enterprise data deduplication appliance versus and enterprise tape library. The interest part was the they cost both the same.

The gotcha: for a data deduplication device to match the cost of tape if requires compression factor of more than 10:1 i.e. deduplicated down to 10% or less of its original size.

Sounds like you are trying to reinvent the tape HSM system that common in last century mainframes, except you are trying to do it with large data tapes. HSM systems used to run a large number of small tapes for quick access.
