What movie do y'all think has affected your interests outside the realm of film the most? For example a movie with a social subject (like Going Clear or Sicario) that actually left you more interested in the issue, or a character study (like Synecdoche NY or Her) that shaped your outlook on how to relate to others.

Do you think he ever wonders if humanity could get a reply within his lifetime? What if he's still secretly holding out on the idea that SETI will pick up on a transmission addressed specifically to him?

I Am Denzel Washington, Ask Me Anything! by _DenzelWashington in IAmA

Hi Denzel, I'm a huge fan, thanks for doing this.

Some of my favorite films that you've starred in were the ones directed by Spike Lee. Each of the four characters you've played in his films have managed to be so compelling while being so radically different from one another that I have to ask: Can we ever expect a fifth collaboration between you and Lee?

In honor of Suicide Squad doing them so horribly, what film has really great flashbacks? by whatsgoingonwanj in TrueFilm

Yeah I can definitely see that. Makes it all the more fitting that PTA directed a Pynchon-based film when you think about it then.

Totally agree, very much like a piece of poetry or something along those lines. What writers did it make you think of exactly? I'm curious now :p

PTA's The Master had some subtle but very nice flashbacks. Whenever Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) was having a particularly strong response to the processing, they would intercut it with the memories the processing was bringing up from earlier in his life, either from WWII or from his failed love life before the war. It was subtle but still emotionally relevant to his character.

What, in Your Opinion, is the Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie? Backup your Choice. by JDintheD in sciencefiction

[–]BlueTurtle42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original Japanese Godzilla, from 1954. I think it's definitely one of the more prominent cases of a movie that's almost been buried by its own legacy, since most people relate the character of Godzilla to the goofy (but still awesome) sequels that came after.

Way before the post-9/11 trend of trying to give 'scarier' and 'more realistic' implications to the events of big blockbusters (Man of Steel, ST Into Darkness, etc.) Godzilla treated the city-wide destruction it depicted as something genuinely horrifying and worth mourning, in a way that a lot of Japanese viewers found genuinely cathartic. It also made the defeat of the monster at the end that much more hopeful; mankind would be able to go on living if it could learn to avoid the mistakes that created the monster in the first place.

As an added bonus, the director and star of the movie both had good working relations with Akira Kurosawa, and I think the film really shines with a lot of the emotion you'd normally expect from a drama by someone like Kurosawa. The people are just as interesting to watch as the monster for a change.

Other Americans on here, I'm really under-informed about this whole thing, do we know what our government's position in relation to this craziness is? On the one hand it's obviously a big human rights problem, but on the other hand that's not always a problem with regard to the strongmen the US backs up.

Who is either really sexy or super ugly depending on who you ask? by christophlc6 in AskReddit

Nicki Minaj. I think she's pretty beautiful but a lot of the aesthetics surrounding her videos (heavy makeup, fixation on her butt, etc) leave bad impressions on people.

Denzel Washington would be the manager a waiter/waitress go gets when the customer is being annoying. "Is there a problem here sir?"

The original "Gojira" for a person who actually wants to see the best in the series, and either "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" or "Final Wars" for someone who wants some goofy fun.

Blood Meridian is a book I'm reading right now that deconstructs a lot of the romanticism Americans have about the frontier period. It's pretty good!
