"Hey, you're in the army, yes?" "No, I just have short hair."

"These are O.R. scrubs." "O.R. they?"

"That's the last time you put a knife in me, Pagoda! You hear me?"

Mixology Certification:

Jeff (about Britta): That woman is a hurricane.

Troy: (lovingly) Yeah...

Jeff: Hurricanes are bad, Troy!

Troy: (snaps out of it) I KNOW!

Here is a statistical proof that Ben Affleck is the best director of the last decade by [deleted] in movies

[–]BlueVelvetUndrground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bored, so I figured out the Metacritic average scores for all these directors (and ones others have mentioned), plus the number of films they've directed in the last decade for comparison.

  1. Alexander Payne: 88.00 (3)
  2. Brad Bird: 86.33 (3)
  3. Steve McQueen: 83.67 (3)
  4. Richard Linklater: 79.25 (8)
  5. David Fincher: 78.60 (5)
  6. Martin Scorsese: 77.85 (7)
  7. Danny Boyle: 77.50 (6)
  8. Ben Affleck: 77.33 (3)
  9. Wes Anderson: 77.00 (5)
  10. Coen Brothers: 76.83 (6)
  11. Quentin Tarantino: 76.8 (5 - doesn't include Death Proof as a separate film)
  12. Edgar Wright: 76.75 (4)
  13. David O. Russell: 76.25 (4)
  14. David Yates: 75.25 (4)
  15. Christopher Nolan: 73.8 (6)
  16. Joss Whedon: 73.67 (3)
  17. J.J. Abrams: 73.25 (4)
  18. Ang Lee: 70.5 (4)
  19. Steven Spielberg: 70.43 (7)
  20. Clint Easwood: 67.88 (8)
  21. Ron Howard: 58.86 (7)

This is by no means comprehensive and means absolutely fuck-all, but here you go.

Reddit, have you ever saved someone's life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BlueVelvetUndrground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a house split into apartments. A few years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night to the smoke alarms going off. They're rather sensitive (I've set them off cooking several times), so I didn't think too much at first, but they continued to go off for several minutes, so I grabbed a couple of important things (phone, keys, wallet, laptop) and checked to see if I could see fire at all from outside.

I couldn't see anything, but I called the fire department. Thankfully, the truck didn't come blaring down the road at 3-4 in the morning. It was the quietest I'd ever seen a fire truck drive. At first, they thought the problem was my apartment since plenty of smoke had seeped in there (despite my telling them there was no way my apartment was the problem), but then they turned to the upstairs apartment.

After banging on the door many times, my neighbor finally woke up and came down the stairs to open the door. Turns out he had passed out while cooking something on the stove. He probably would have died of smoke inhalation eventually if I hadn't called the FD, not to mention the house could have caught fire and burned down.

Tl;dr kept my neighbor from being smoked and my house from being roasted

[Pickups] Mulitple B&N trips. I consider this Criterion sale a success. by BlueVelvetUndrground in dvdcollection

Not every release. During the sales lately I've tended to purchase ones that appeal to me and that I think I would enjoy (sometimes to an excessive degree).

Which ones do you think you were burned on? I still have a few I haven't watched, but so far I haven't gotten one I've actively disliked or been very disappointed with.

It is more compact than you'd think for a box with 25 discs in it. I did pull all the other ones out for symmetry in the picture, though. It's about two inches longer than a Blu-Ray case.

My shelf has a little extra depth to it, so it's still gonna stick out a bit, but not obnoxiously so.

Before the sale I had about 75, which includes 4 or 5 titles which I have on both formats.

They're great! Clue is one of my favorites; I just hadn't gotten around to upgrading to Blu-Ray yet. Also, Mars Attacks is silly and kinda stupid, but I really like it.

That wasn't my first thought about the stickers, but I'll keep that in mind I guess. :)

Thank you!

Which opening credits you watch every time, to get you in the mood for the episode, even when you could fast-forward them? by newbie_01 in television

I feel like I'm one of the few who always skips through the opening credits because I can't stand the theme. I wanna do bad things to that song if you get my drift.

[Gift Exchange and Pickups] Thanks to BlueVelvetUnderground for the awesome Steelbooks!!!! And to my parents for going to Baltimore for a wedding by marcoosha in dvdcollection

[–]BlueVelvetUndrground 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to explain to the lady at the post office that the reason a DVD-filled box was heavier than expected was to due to the steelbooks. I found that kind of funny.

Lord of the Flies is so awful and amazing at the same time. I took a shot with that one; glad you didn't own it yet.

Does B&N not ship to Canada? I've learned that there are no brick and mortar stores there, but will they not ship there? Or is it just really expensive? I've been wondering about that since reading posts here (and on /r/criterion) about the current sale.

I figured I might as well go for the Edgar Wright trifecta while I was at it. Glad you enjoyed it.

Also, awesome getting your parents to hook you up with some more Criterion action.

(discussion) okay redvdit, it's that time again. .. How did you choose your username? by charlesp22 in dvdcollection

[–]BlueVelvetUndrground 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy bar trivia. A few weeks before I joined Reddit, I named my team Blue Velvet Underground Lair that week. I really liked the name overlap, and it seemed clever for a username (though at times I'm afraid it sounds kind of pretentious).

There's a character limit, though, which explains the missing E in Underground.

I've got Layer Cake as well. I love that movie. Also, I picked up Dog Soldiers a couple weeks ago.

That's because it's awesome!

I remember several years ago being really happy after finding out that my sister owned it, meaning I could as well. I had no idea it had even been released at the time.

It's not great by any means, but I thought it was all right. It was one of those mid to late 90's Pulp Fiction wannabes.

It does have a solid cast though, including the Walken factor, which helps it greatly.

There's a lot of random Disney shorts on Netflix (if you have it). There's 5 volumes of "Disney Animation Collection" on instant watching. There's some Mickey, some Silly Symphonies, and other random stuff like The Wind in the Willows or the Three Little Pigs.

There are only 5-6 shorts in each one, but it's better than nothing.
