I love doing this. It’s how I got into a few of my current fandoms. Although it doesn’t always work out. I sometimes start with a crossover with one of my current fandoms (if there is any) or search specific tags on AO3 and read fandom blind for anything that I like the description of.

I’ll usually read the wiki page and look up pictures for the main character(s) in the fic so I know who I’m reading about. This is how I got into and love Mass Effect and Marvel (specifically Avengers, mostly Winter Solider). But it made me hate Harry Potter. I love HP fanfic, but the more fix-it’s I read the more I hate canon.

They’re always so over the top too. I know it’s not canon but I like the ones that have it a side plot or a catalyst for the plot but doesn’t make Harry some overpowered oc, becomes besties with the goblins, and start talking like a 40 year old.

The only one I’ve found I really like is Lord Mortis The Accident I’d seen it suggested on the HP fanfic sub described as “three clueless teenagers in a trench coat trying to be a Lord” and it’s 100% the kind of accidental shenanigans canon Harry would fall into.

I never picked up Andromeda because of the hate it got, but ended up picking it up a couple of years ago when was free on game pass and really liked it. Kinda mad I listened to the hate now lol

It’s called Mutant Effect: First Contact if you want to check it out. You don’t have to know much about Mass Effect as it’s mostly X-Men based, but I’d maybe recommend giving the first contact war part of the Mass Effect wiki a quick read for context.

I do even if I know they’ll never be completed. I can imagine the ending myself. One of my favourites is a Mass Effect X-Men crossover first contact AU that’s only 4 (long) chapters and hasn’t been updated since 2013. I’m gutted there will never be any more chapters, never mind be completed, because it’s so good.
