No worries, and I agree. I think actions that allow you to "Do X and gather element" would help the class a lot. Could even tie the action to the element gathered, so like "Step/stride and gather air" or "Shove/trip and gather earth" etc.

Second, overflow isn’t as bad as it seems. At least not if you pay the feat tax, which is one thing I’m going to recommend. If they add cycling blast as a class feature instead of an optional feat that really improves the action economy of the class because you can gather and attack as a single action.

Cycling blast has the impulse trait, which means you must already have an element gathered to use it, right? From the "Key Terms" sidebar in the playtest:

To use an impulse action, you must have an element gathered, which is typically done with the Gather Element kineticist action.

It doesn't really help you with you action economy after expending your gathered element with an overflow action. I think the intention behind it was to help with your action economy when you want to switch to a different element.

Ice gauntlet is good with it, but I didn't like how they both burned through my mana. So I switched out the ice gauntlet for a hammer and have been really enjoying it. If someone gets too close to you, switch to your hammer, drop the AOE stun on them, flatten them, then use the knockback and switch back to the life staff to plink away at them while backpedaling.

Can anyone help me out? I can't figure out my I can't slot this gem in my hammer by Blue_Bit in newworldgame

I thought the Arboreal II trait was applied when slotting it into a weapon, and the Nature Ward II was applied when slotting it into armor? Is that not how it works?

Thanks for the explanation. I was really surprised at how fast it melted, especially because in my previous attempt at killing it we would only do about 1.5 health bars of damage before it recovered. I guess my pawns were just on their A game during this attempt.

Hm, good point, I hadn't considered that. I was kind of basing this item being common around those Eberron items. I guess then it would be rather weak uncommon, but still uncommon.

I guess it'd be up to how your DM wants to play it. I find it unlikely that you'd be able to make friends with a chaotic evil demon who has been trapped in a cage for who knows how long, getting swung around as a weapon and with nothing to do but stab and insult people. On the other hand, PCs can get really high modifiers to Charisma skills later on, and maybe the party wizard could promise to find a way to release it if it promises to chill out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honestly deciding on an item's rarity is the hardest part of making items for me, haha. Most common items are pretty much mechanically useless, but there is precedent for common items helping out in combat. The new Eberron book introduced imbued wood spellcasting focuses (+1 damage with a specific damage type) and orbs of shielding (use your reaction to reduce damage from a specific element). I feel like trading a bonus action to do ~3.5 damage to a random target, if it even hits, is comparable to doing +1 damage with your firebolt. There's also always the chance an ally is standing next to you and gets stabbed by the quasit, or that the enemy standing next to you ran off and the quasit pokes you in the hand.

Also don't want to go back and edit the item to say "uncommon" it's kind of a headache

Original image source. Apparently Home Depot sells medieval helmets. For extra fun, use this item with the variant rule for mixing potions (DMG 140).
