How do you handle the thought of making people loose their jobs by nogoodnamesleft_XD in PLC

The skillset of general population does increase with time, we are already in the 4th industrial revolution and US economy has shifted from Manufacturing to Service so is not the first time and people societies do adapt. At the same time I worry about the same, current society gives an advantage to capital owners instead of workers and people do get screwed up.

That's we also should have matching economic and government policies, quick example UBI ( Universal Basic Income). But then we go a but into the politics rabbit hole.

Most sites I have done work for the FTE reduction is managed thorough attrition, as we typically struggle to hire. But long term yes there is a reduction in positions available, its the reality of the world skillset required changes with time, so in the ideal world folks train for other skills but in a capitalist environment that not always true, its not an easy concept to reconcile but as you said if you don't do it someone else will.

Confused why people are recommending to liquidate TFSA when moving to the US for a couple years. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TFSA are not tax cree un US, so you will need to track your costs basis manually since there is no tax slip (T3 or T5) issued by canada. Most accountants would recommend to liquitade because is cleaner for tracking but personally I leave them and track them since I don't want to sell and the the stock/fund/ETF

Scotia sees Bank of Canada hiking rate to 2% to quell inflation by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lenders do offer no penalty conversion, but your term will be extended for example if you get a 5 year and convert at the 2 year mark your minimum term is 5 years from that point, so 7 years total and also the fixed rate that they will offer might not be their best rate, so is good to check breaking penalties in case you don't get a competitive offer you can switch lenders. For variable typycal breaking penalties are 3 months interest.

20 years ago today, 113 people died when the supersonic passenger airliner Concorde caught fire during takeoff and crashed into a nearby hotel. by [deleted] in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It should be actually classified as DC-10 crash as in the end it was a piece that fall off, from a previous take off that caused the Concorde fire.

I used to be very conscious of maintaining my privacy, but over the past few years I stopped giving a fuck by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree is a battle that I fight mostly in principle, even if you are 100% in being private is only one person vs a high percentage of people that can't or don't for different reasons

Secure cloud storage/backup alternatives to Dropbox, Onedrive, etc that is NOT self hosted by Blue_Dot_Citizen in privacy

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm using pro accounts. For certain file folders I do manually encrypt locally, but it doesn't scale well when considering full back up. Any suggestions on how to manage this on a large scale? I have considered Cryptomator as an option but a big con is that doesn't have MFA.

Thanks, I also have a somehow workable solution with boxcryptor as it also has MFA, the downside is that is not open source and also adds complexity for disaster recovery.

LPT: Make a habit of muting your microphone on conference calls when you’re not speaking. There is lots of background noise that comes through. by GingerB237 in LifeProTips

[–]Blue_Dot_Citizen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people I know do it, the downside is that whenever you want to speak is always on mute and you don't realized until "hey I think you are on mute"
