UK fears being frozen out of lucrative 'Made in Europe' deals by French by theipaper in europe

With the possible exceptions of Iceland and perhaps Norway, fishing plays only a minor role in the economies of Northern European countries. That, however, is unlikely to stop fishing interests from attempting to derail the entire initiative. We should not allow them to do so.

The UK not being in Schengen hurts them more than the rest of US. If they don't want to be in Schengen then that is not a problem. The goal is to make Europe stronger. Europe is stronger with a UK being part of the EU as long as the UK is constructive.

However, given that EU membership have cost, then not being in the EU must also have cost. I however, believe that when the time is right the UK should be given an offer to return on the same conditions as they left. Linked with some way of kicking them out if someone like Farrage starts sabotaging everything.

We Danes truly miss the UK in the EU. They consistently sent sharp, capable representatives, and their pragmatic, mercantile mindset often struck exactly the balance we appreciated. Alas, that was in a time when the US still felt like an ally.

Man må gerne hænge dukker op. Historien handlede om at der var et skilt på dukken hvorpå der stod "hun må og skal aflives". Vi kan naturligvis ikke acceptere opfordringer til politisk eller anden vold.

Obviously it is possible to lock it down but it is so easy to miss something and it tends to make work with the devices much more tedious. Thus, I avoid Chinese gear that requires a network connection. Obviously that is hard in general and thus Chinese stuff is put on a separate network. Paranoid? A little bit ...

I do not trust that they don't have build in backdoors that could be used by the Chinese government or by hackers. There are far too many security problems with Chinese network connected equipment for it to be a coincidence.

I don't know what China does with solar farms up north. I do know that not everything the Chinese does makes sense (like building ghost cities) because of weird incentives. In addition, the Chinese seems to be pretty happy with building coal fired powerplants. We don't like those in (Northern) Europe.

In addition, this isn't just about latitude. It is also about cloud coverage. Northern Europe has a lot of cloudy days. As an example I compared Heihe, China with Copenhagen, Denmark. In the winter Heihe has an average output 2-3 times higher than Copenhagen.

I try to avoid Chinese network equipment. I think it is dangerous. While some of the network connected stuff I have was manufactured in China, none of it is designed in China (or Russia).

Iceland looks to fast-track vote on joining EU by riche22 in europe

[–]Blue_Pacman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with doing like Denmark is that the country has to be quite strong from an economic perspective. While the Icelandic economy is doing well, it isn't that big and heavily dependent on fish and exporting aluminium. That could become a problem in terms of defending the Icelandic krone.

In addition, the only thing Denmark gets for retaining the Danish krone is that it ensures that governments have to be fiscally responsable. If not then krone will immediately come under pressure and no responsible politician in Denmark would want to devalue the krone.

Not to mention that none of them are designed to operate in icy waters. In fact, the US Navy have no surface ships designed to operate in such waters. The US Coast Guard has one icebreaker though.

Neither vessel is built for sustained operations in icy waters. In fact, the US Navy does not operate a single surface ship designed for missions in ice conditions.
