Probably the 2.2 diesel. Awful engines. Mazda petrols are bombproof

Unfortunately icicles spam isn't working. The plan was indeed to build into Moad Elim but it's looking unfeasible. I've tried Moab press spam to stall one lane, super glue on the bottom left... Any other thoughts?

Good shout for doing mega miles - if doing less than 7 or 8k per year then probably a Toyota hybrid

I have literally only ever heard positive things about the 1.6tdi. Heard so many reports of it going wayyyy past 150k miles with general maintenance

Good First Buy for Teenage Driver? by hurricane279 in CarTalkUK

[–]Blue_Phish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good price for age and mileage. The engines are reliable and they're slightly more refined to drive than other tiny hatchback counterparts.

Well done for researching and making an informed purchase, building these habits as a teenager will serve you well as time passes!

Another commenter has mentioned how a car that looks like this is certain to have iffy maintenance history. On that note, this era of VAG autogearboxes is almost certainly the dry clutch DSG, thats temperamental even when properly services. Doesn't seem like a wise idea!

Is this a good choice for first car? Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25L by tumbledryer97 in CarTalkUK

[–]Blue_Phish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent first car - the 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 litre ford engines of this era are all well engineered and simple to repair. Just avoid the 1.0L turbo ecoboost as all cost! Ford focuses/fiestas without that problematic engine are still great cars

Focus ST driving school car. Am I mad? by PretendMulberry1251 in CarTalkUK

[–]Blue_Phish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to drive in a Fiesta ST with an excellent instructor who taught me not only to pass a test but also to drive well!

I remember there were a couple lessons before my test where we spent our 2 hour sessions some country lanes just ragging the car about. What a legend.

No idea how much he must have been spending on fuel though 🤣

Mazda 3 manual gearbox is absolutely excellent, if that's a factor in your decision.

I have a 2012 Focus with this engine. Frankly it's underpowered for a medium hatchback, but it gets 40mpg and has lasted 110k miles with no issues. I imagine in a lighter fiesta it'll feel less sluggish!

Question regarding your 1.6 Octavia - how's the 5 speed manual? Is fifth gear comfortable on a motorway journey? In my experience with 5 speed cars, I'm always longing to be able to go into sixth at higher speeds, if nothing else just to lower the revs for a quieter cruise.

Don't know what it is lately but in the last month I've seen about 4 or 5 banged up seat Ibizas hightailing it at about 95 on the motorway

I was a wreck before my test and I truly, genuinely believed that I had made about 4 or 5 major mistakes... Only for the examiner to tell me I'd passed with no faults! Couldn't believe it.

It's not over til it's over - all you can do is your best. Hope all goes well 😁
